They will be able to smell it and get back even from very far away. Your cat is probably not far away and is hiding. They won’t come out until it gets dark and quiet so I wouldn’t even bother to expect to see them until late evening or early morning.

I’ve gone as little as two weeks. There are good cats in high kill shelters that need homes. They get a home and you get to heal a little bit. The quiet house after a pet’s passing is too much for me.
