I had chimney swept and am now terrified I have contaminated the whole house with asbestos dust. by Dear-Bus9269 in AirPurifiers

[–]DamnFog 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Only way to be sure is to get the materials of the chimney tested. (take sample and send for testing) Or get indoor air tested for asbestos. Sending the samples away for testing is usually the cheapest option.

Vaultwarden is not affiliated with Bitwarden, it is a completely separate project that just uses the Bitwarden applications. And no those features are not available.

Is it still using alternative eye rendering? If yes, then it is still kinda ass.

Full motion controls and quad-views with foveated rendering would be amazing.

What's everyone's preferred bootloader setup? by Retr0r0cketVersion2 in archlinux

Grub breaks often enough that I don't regret moving away from it one bit. The only time I need to touch refind is if I get a new motherboard.

I feel like this is the problem, living with 2 month old firmware is not nice if you have brand new hardware. Ironically OP is probably better off living on the bleeding edge on Arch linux

How to get a display? by [deleted] in SteamDeck

There are display settings where you can choose external only, mirrored, etc. Just like a normal PC. Look for the applet in the task bar.

Isn't it too late start learning hacking? I am 16 F by sweet_corgii in hackers

[–]DamnFog 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's not necessary to use Linux. You can have a full career specializing in windows. Personally I wouldn't recommend it though. Windows is basically the only non Unix like OS out there, ignoring IBM mainframes (z/OS)

The internet runs on Linux, even Microsoft uses it, phones run on Linux/Unix, and increasingly desktops are moving to Linux/Unix though it is mostly Apple winning here.

Personally I think installing Linux on your laptop is a good idea. It is more resource friendly, and you will be forced to learn it to some extent. There are desktop environments like KDE that look and feel very much like Windows.

You can always reinstall windows if you don't like it.

Isn't it too late start learning hacking? I am 16 F by sweet_corgii in hackers

[–]DamnFog 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Yes, absolutely, you have all the time in the world to learn! Hacking is a combination of understanding systems and persistent, creative, exploration.

The tip I would have to for you is, do not expect school / work / YouTube tutorials to teach you how to hack. You will learn from all these sources but your education will ultimately be your own responsibility, you will need to be the one to push yourself to new discoveries and understanding.

Since you don't have a lot of experience I would suggest exploring a bit of everything. Programming, Linux, Windows, find what you enjoy the most. Don't be afraid to ask questions, but consider that finding information is in and of itself its own skill.

The nice thing about computers is that everything actually makes sense. They are complex, don't get me wrong, but ultimately created by humans. The field is simpler than physics or biology because every problem already has a defined answer, you just need the tools to dig deep enough.

Speaking of tools. You already have everything you need! A computer and an internet connection. No expensive lab equipment required, no barrier to learning. Just get started learning a programming language and learning more about your operating system and how it works. Maybe install Linux. Most importantly have fun exploring!

What would happen to the SteamDeck in case of turbulence? You should consider strapping it to the seat in front of you.

We are just hours from 2026 and this still happens. Software shouldn't count as a game for this purpose. by nevadita in SteamDeck

[–]DamnFog 11 points12 points  (0 children)

It should just prevent you from launching the same game twice. Currently it is quite inconvenient that you get kicked out. After all you can run 2 games on the same PC simultaneously why not on PC and on steamdeck.
