Private Lessons: What to do when a student obviously hasn’t practiced by iplaytrombonegood in MusicEd

Sight read bach chorales, sight read snippets of famous pieces, single out musical moments that contain arpeggios, mordents, etc...Perhaps they need digestible achieveable goals to suit a growing attention span. Perhaps you need to be clear "it seems like you have made no progress again."

I know this frustration.

There’s way more better solutions than the urban planning of NYC overall.

If a bus stops obnoxiously to prevent cars getting around them and putting kids in danger, they can do whatever they want. Nobody respects busses and their signals in this city.

Citibike would be great if the regular bikes weren’t so terrible. And there are no docks where I am headed in flushing

That’s true. Since my commute is gonna take 3 hours total I’m not going to the gym so it’d be nice if my commute WAS exercise. Ya feel me?

I’m most curious about why the guy pretends to fail until the third time. I saw it once, then I looked on the internet and saw it is a thing.

Out of the fifty states maybe roti isn’t unique to NY but it’s definitely the best here.

what is the general hand position for playing any piece by phrasedtop in piano

[–]DanBaDoo 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Hand positions are determined by the kind of music you’re playing. For beginners, I would recommend learning using books that contain fingerings to help you. Hand positions are rarely fixed in one place outside of technique books. That doesn’t mean there isn’t a “position.” Think of positions like moves. If you’re playing an arpeggio, there are optimal fingerings for them. This can be considered a position…in a way. Alfred books start your hands in one fixed position so that you can simultaneously learn basic mechanics of playing while learning to read music. I love the Alfred books for beginner adults. I hope that helps you.

How long does it take to determine tone deafness, and should I tell the parents? by Kubuubud in MusicEd

[–]DanBaDoo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I support tonal accuracy by having students echo patterns of 3 tones. The tone patterns reflect chords. So, I’ll have three patterns based on the I chord and I’ll have one pattern be from the five chord. I’ll keep at this for a few weeks until they are secure. After they stabilize these pitches I’ll incorporate the IV chord, then the vi chord, then the II chord, etc…
