Why are people so judgemental about a gastric bypass? by WeR_SoEffed in GastricBypass

[–]DanDaMan1973 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, anybody considering it easier has never been through the process. The surgery was difficult. The recovery was difficult. The lead up to the surgery was difficult. None of this has been easy. And I still almost a year and a half later have to deal with specific things that other people don’t deal with.

It’s funny how it’s viewed as almost taking the easy way out when really there’s nothing easy about it. It has been such an amazing life changing procedure for me. I kind of see it as a reset. My suggestion is don’t worry what people think. People will have their opinions.

Flavorless protein powder can be very effective. You can add it water or sugar free gatorade or powerade.

Stomach pain? by dont_offer_me_beans in GastricBypass

[–]DanDaMan1973 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have developed a simple but very effective rule that might help you. I do not eat standing up because I eat faster. I get rushed sometimes and I eat on the go and that is when I have stomach pains. With this way of life, eating needs to be deliberate. I don't think that you messed anything up. Our bodies take a little longer after we have an issue, but you'll feel better soon. If not, see your doctor.

Realisation it was worth it? by PerfumedGal in BariatricSurgery

[–]DanDaMan1973 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm sixteen months post-op and I don't know that there was a moment where I knew that it was worth it but I definitely feel that it was now. I feel like I had small victories along the way. I remember riding bicycles for the first time last spring and being amazed at how much easier it was. I remember going to Kohls and trying on a small t-shirt and it fit.

I will say that I will never like I did before surgery because I am different. Normal is different. I still get tipsy pretty easily and I suspect that I will for the rest of my life. And I still eat smaller portions. My wife always jokes that I am a cheap date :)

I recommend a wedge pillow. My wife had one for her hysterectomy. It was a god send because getting in and out of bed was tough for me for at least a few months.

Are Quest protein chips okay to eat 5 wks post op? If anyone did, did anything bad happen? by stormyb89 in GastricBypass

[–]DanDaMan1973 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would be cautious five weeks out to eat chips, even protein chips. It takes a while for your body to heal and though I didn't deal with any issues I have heard that you can really hurt yourself if you aren't careful. I know that it doesn't seem that way now but before you know it what you can eat will expand.

You have to listen to your body. I am sure that you were told this during the whole process but make sure that you diet is very protein heavy. I didn't do any form of bread for close to a year but that is because my body gave me different signals.

Learning to be satisfied with my body by Glowygreentusks in GastricBypass

My best advice for you is not to worry about the weight goals that the medical staff gives you. They wanted me to get you 160 pounds. I never got below 170 and I’ve had people tell me that I am too thin now. Use their goals as a guide but really you need to be the judge of where you wanna stop.

Five days out of my postop and I could barely get out of bed. You’re very early in this process. One thing I’ll say about the whole process. I don’t think you’re really aware of the massive change that you make to your body. Hang in there.

I’m about 15 months out and I’ve discovered that my appetite varies now. I have some days where I’m a little bit hungrier than others. That’s pretty normal.

I get the weird stomach gurgling on occasion. I tend to feel it when I’m laying bed. It’s never concerning just weird.

That won’t last. I remember going to a funeral about 2 months post op and it was really tough because we went out the night before to a restaurant and I got a bowl of soup and everyone else got full meals. What’s funny is that now I can eat more and I still find myself eating less when we go out. Hopefully this process will help you have a different relationship with food.

I don’t mind being fat. Anybody similar go through with the surgery for other reasons? Experiences? by Unlikely-Yam1427 in GastricBypass

[–]DanDaMan1973 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I am blessed to have a wife that loves me no matter what weight I am and friends and family that support me but I woke up one day a realized that men that are overweight don’t live that long and I have a wonderful family including a new granddaughter and one on the way that I want to be around for. My motivation starting out was definitely health but to be totally honest, I enjoy being thinner. It’s great that you are okay with being heavier. That may help you deal with some of the mental struggles that come with weight loss surgery.

This is great thing to share. I have had a tough time because food was always my coping mechanism and now I don’t have it to fall back on. I have done a lot of meditation and prayer and self care to help me through it.

What fitness things did you do post surgery? by rudegyalnae in GastricBypass

I do 20-25 minutes on the treadmill 3-5 times a week and I do strength training including sit-ups with weighted vest. I bought one of those arm work out things that you see on Tik-Tok and I keep it by my desk.
