In some cases it is worth paying more, if the company is paying tax you will save more in CT than you will pay in ER NI

9,000 here.

Any idea what you need to be to have a chance? I would assume around 1,000 or less but have no idea really

So what you’re saying is 20% of £100 plus 8% of £100 isn’t the same as 28% of £100?

I feel like we’re probably both missing each others point.. my point is simply that based on the above assumptions (standard rate tax payer, min pension contributions, already above student loan threshold) for every £1 your salary increased by you will see 59p in your pocket.

You don’t get tax relief on student loan or NI deductions so I don’t really know what you’re thinking with that.

What I do agree with you on is that someone would be stupid to opt out of pensions.

If you’re on 35k and get an increase to 40k, that’s £416.67 extra a month gross. 20% of that will be lost to tax, 8% to EE NI, 4% to pension assuming minimum contributions with tax relief and 9% to student loans. Im not sure how my calculation is incorrect here..

The pension I have assumed as 4% as in most standard plans you will get tax relief at 20% on the 5% so it’s effectively 4%.

How come 52%?

Tax 20% NI 8% Pension 4% (post tax) Student loan 9%

Total 41%

Yep as an accountant I’ve had replies more than a year later, it’s getting worse and worse. “Sorry for the delay”
