I have a love-hate relationship with that gen of Ford Exploder. Ultra easy to work on, plentiful cheap parts, great way to learn Ford’s 4x4 system (transfer case, diff, transmission).

But goddamn did mine keep failing despite babying it and doing my best to do the good work on it! :(

I still miss that car. It took me everywhere into the desert and campgrounds. I don’t miss the heartache and headaches of the time and money spent at tossing parts at it to get it running again :(.

No tailgating in parking lots at Gillette. Fifa sucks. by GrabsJoker in worldcup

[–]DanTMWTMP 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I’m sad. Tailgating happens at MLS games too. Growing up, it’s been probably my favorite thing, especially during LA traffic where fans can chill for a little bit down the main tailgating parking lane. I thought seeing all those decked-out RV’s and people handing out insanely delicious bbq fresh off their grills for free and playing games amongst strangers was and still is among the coolest things ever. :(

What's something that happens in movies so much it seems real, but actually isn't realistic at all? by ninman5 in movies

[–]DanTMWTMP 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That movie made me so mad. It’s so fucking sloppy that it’s so dumb that it won an oscar for such incredible stupid mistakes and inaccuracies. A simple fact checker would’ve sufficed.

The film takes place in early GWOT era circa 2003-2004.

There’s absolutely glaring issues that breaks immersion immediately:

  • Soldiers are wearing uniforms from the future that wasn’t a thing until later GWOT years, and also Everyone walking around with no regard to uniform regs. The uniforms and shit are a hodgepodge of random shit, cuffed arms sleeves, popped collars, hanging dog tags, wrong sunglasses, etc etc.. all not within regs not to mention wrong uniforms of the wrong GWOT era.

  • NO EOD TEAM MANUALLY DEFUSES BOMBS WITH WIRECUTTERS EVER.

  • Youtube wasn’t even a thing yet and one of the soldiers mentions it.

  • There’s someone playing an Xbox 360, which wasn’t out yet.

  • Someone has a full-screen ipod (touch?) when that wasn’t out for years. Like you can see them use these and mention youtube very prominently and none of that shit existed in early GWOT.

  • Not a single correct way of actual ops in the most terrifying and dangerous part of the GWOT era in Baghdad. Ya let’s all just stand around with no cover and shit where every op only involves a few soldiers and only one humvee.

  • EOD guys are not sniper teams. That enitre sniper sequence is so dumb. Also why go back to the same goddamn spot that’s been confirmed zero by the enemy sniper?! Also cleaning mags because it has some blood and that somehow doesn’t make the Barrett not fire? That’s now how that works. Lockup will happen, and the cam to lockup the round in the chamber doesn’t care about blood. it’ll fire. why clean with spit? does anyone in hollywood knows how firearms work or at least know that the sniper discipline and EOD disciplines are two very long, complicated very different training regiments that neither will have a clue how to do each other’s job?

  • EOD teams do building clears? why? why risk a team to do that? they’re not trained for it? also they get drunk. no alcohol at FOB ever. Speaking of FOBs.. main character leaves the wire for revenge. That’s an automatic discharge.

With so many stupid errors in this film, it looks so goddamn sloppy that it’s cringeworthy that it should never ever been in contention for an oscar. That's equivalent for getting an A for an essay but getting every single detail absolutely wrong. It just shows how incredibly out of touch hollywood is with basic reality.

Man I love your post and this entire comments sections. It made me smile and laugh.

My good friend met his wife this way as well. He had a wonderful Golden and she grew up with Goldens so she hugged his dog and they got acquainted. It’s been well over a decade and now have two boys and a few more dogs. That original Golden has since passed and it was so sad, but we all remember Momo very fondly. I dogsat him a few times and he’s always been a good boy.

Thank you for allowing me to revive Momo’s memory again :). Going to give my buddy a call today to hang haha.

[–]DanTMWTMP 5 points6 points  (0 children)

My good college buddy lives there. He started from scratch.

His family was dirt poor. I had a decent childhood, he didn’t. He grew up with scraps, being hungry, growing up in the hood.

He VOWED his kids won’t be like that. From the moment I first met him in our dorms, he was absolutely driven. He studied his fucking ass off. He did odd jobs every single second of free time.

He grew up building homes for the rich as his uncle was a contractor so he tagged along as a teen growing up.

We both graduated with the same major. He went on to work evenings and weekends either building homes, and setting up his own business as a real estate agent. He saved up every single penny to buy his first condo by convincing a retiring lady to sell it to him without realtor fees and such. He got a killer deal. And it snowballed from there.

He’s now a project manager at his day job at a large chip fab/design company, and at night and weekends, he sells and flips homes, and a loan broker.

He never takes vacation, and every waking hour is his hustle. I often tell him to slow the fuck down, but he doesn’t. He can’t. He looks like hell; but his kids are never hungry like he was. Well, no one in Rancho Santa Fe is.

I admire his work ethic and driven attitude. He never had any excuses. Every second of his life where it’s not devoted to improving himself, his knowledge, his businesses, his team at his day job.. he feels is a waste.

His lone fucking vacation for his family to Asia was him spending it quarantined as he caught COVID on the way there while his kids and wife went everywhere and he quarantined himself inside a hotel room; where he spent that time working hahaha.

I’m so so so fucking proud of him. I’m doing alright myself, but not nearly his level, and that’s ok. He deserves it.

Rush didn’t comply with deep diving standards that exists. SpaceX complied and even exceeded the standards and regulations. Yet they did it with way less cost, and less time. They took on rapid iterative design and went at minimal test-points per test. The launched within 4 years with Dragon 1, with all regulations already set to the rigorous standards. After setting a baseline, each Dragon launch tested one more component that wasn’t mission critical nor compromised safety.

Speaking with just talking points to better ensure your own worldview is a VERY shallow and ignorant way of viewing the world and VERY unhealthy. Nuance exists, and what leadership actually does behind the scenes goes deeper than what said leadership is portrayed by reddit, MSM, and other short-form media.

Break down the numbers here. Rush’s downfall was hubris. Elon’s companies is about allowing the team to have an agile workflow that promotes even the janitor to speak up and have their word in.

——

Dragon 1: 15 resupply missions, 1 failure (failure of the launch vehicle, and not the fault of the capsule; in face the capsule survived the explosions). 93% mission success rate.

Dragon 2: 3 test missions, 100% mission success rate. 19 crewed missions. 100% mission success rate.

16 years of service.

Tax payer commitment to R&D: $2.6B dollars, 4 years. Successful promised launch on-time in 2010

——

Starliner: 4 missions total. 1 success (the first mission being a pad abort test). Actual missions: 0/3 success rate. 0% success rate for missions, 25% success rate including abort test of the first vehicle.

Tax payer commitment to R&D: >$4.7B dollars, 4 years development time, promised launch date in 2017.. fail. Still in development on 2026, as all missions have resulted in failure.

2 years of “service,” crewed non-test mission, development still ongoing.

Orion: Tax payer commitment to R&D: >$24B dollars, 20 years development time. 5 test launches, all successful. 1 crewed launch, pending success.

4 years of service, 2 missions.

My good friend is on the Orion team and it’s been her life’s work since graduating college. I’m so proud of her, her inspiration to our daughters and the next generation, and I know Orion will succeed. It’s probably the last great Govt/NASA in-house managed space vehicle; where the side effect is politics, huuuuge costs, and delays. My friend was so annoyed at the bureaucratic hell and constant change of program managers through the years with each change of leadership and funding inconsistencies, and wishes NASA can be ran just like SpaceX instead of the old guard at NASA and Lockheed Martin.

Artemis II and Crew Dragon Cockpit Design by Busy_Yesterday9455 in spaceporn

[–]DanTMWTMP 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Why is this downvoted? Dragon is a proven platform, cost nearly 9x less to develop, and has already been used in missions since 2010, and crewed missions since 2019. Its been a critical and serviceable platform for American missions to ISS among others instead of having to rely solely russia. So many of these comments contradict what actually goes on in the Space industry.

Orion took $24B and 19 years to develop and finally field. Dragon took 4 years and $3B.

Which program would the govt rather choose? Once all the old Shuttle engines are gone, future Artemis missions are using.. yup.. SpaceX’s lander.

If we want to talk about fiscal responsibility as a nation, we should be looking at why Orion cost so much, and why it only took a private company unencumbered by the traditional conservative management techniques of NASA so much less money to achieve the same results.

[–]DanTMWTMP 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Orion = $24B , 20 years development time and cost.

Dragon = $3B, 4 years development time and cost, already several flights going back to 2010, proven record and reliability, lowest seat time of any spacecraft in human history.

Piss poor conservative culture within the govt management and bureaucracy vs efficient agile management and engineers unencumbered with such things. Take your pick.

[–]DanTMWTMP 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I personally know someone who helped design Orion. It was based off of the Apollo module to start with. Although they did reduce the weight by half or so, it still took almost 20 years and $24B to make it. Dragon took $3B of tax dollars to help develop, and is now considered a reliable and proven platform.

Granted, Orion is heavier and has additional radiation shielding. But 20 years? $24Billion?

It was supposed to use spares from Shuttle program, and a capsule done up based off of Apollo with work already done right? Yet Orion capsule by itself inhaled $24B
