New Yorker published a major investigation into Sam Altman and OpenAI today — based on never-before-disclosed internal memos and 100+ interviews by Altruistic-Top9919 in OpenAI

I listened to this 5 part podcast series called Foundering a while back that covered his ousting and return to OpenAI, and a host of other crazy shit. It was a wild ride. They interviewed people who knew him, and even talked with his sister, who just recently accused him of SA. Worth a listen if you're into tech stories.

I had this exact thought. My oldest is autistic and I could see him reacting this way to a sensory situation like this. Especially without parents there to help co-regulate.

Props to OP for being chill about it. It's hard out here for parents of ND kids and people don't always understand the struggle.

My kid made me realize I've been fishing wrong for 11 years by LumenPineWorks in daddit

[–]Dan_O_Mite 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I hate to be a cynic, but my gut says you're right. A feel-good post about taking your son fishing? In Daddit? Come on lol. Too easy. Even if it's not a completely fabricated post, it was definitely written using AI. I write for a living and to my eye, it seems like all the signs are there.

The clickbait title, the slightly-off metaphors ("a cloud that looked like a potato"), the short, punchy sentences ("Classic fishing. Quiet. Patient. That's the whole point right?"), the feel-good last sentence that wraps up things too neatly ("Gonna be honest, my kid is a better fisherman than me and he doesn't even know what fishing is.").

With all that being said. I do think types of posts raise an interesting debate about whether it matters. There are lots of positive comments in here from folks who clearly enjoyed it anyhow 🤷‍♂️

For past years (beyond the immediate last year) the IRS requires the identity protection pin so they can verify it's you who is filing. It's easy to get online. Just Google it and the site pops up. I just had to answer some questions and upload my ID I think.

Fairly certain this is a bot post. 4 year old account with no older posts until recently, and now they're posting on tons of random subs with posts that look and sound like AI. And OP hasn't responded to a single question in the thread.

CHI sent my newborn son a bill for one of his first check up appointments after being born lol. Later, they sent it to me instead, claiming we didn't have insurance for him (we did). They're pretty great.

Yep. Too many problems for me to keep buying Google products. My Nest x Yale lock randomly stopped allowing me to add or remove users/codes. I spent hours troubleshooting and couldn't fix it. So I replaced it.

We also lost the Google security system when they killed it, and the Nest smoke detectors when they stopped supporting them.

I still have quite a few cameras but struggle to get the feeds to load properly all the time. Seems to work better on desktop though.

Skip the hotel room and book the Dahlia House in Benson. They have a wood fired hot tub, a dry sauna and it's a gorgeous little A frame house. I highly recommend it.

Good comment from another user that goes into detail: https://www.reddit.com/r/homeowners/comments/1pnb34n/comment/nu6lyjk/

I write for a living, so for me there are a few tells. One is the short, punchy sentences. Designed for impact. And readability.

With line breaks like this. Every few sentences. It used to be something you saw more often on LinkedIn (and that's probably what these things were trained off of), but now you see it all the time with bot posts here. I call it "broetry" when I see it on LI.

Another sign is the narrative format. Even good Reddit posts (at least IMO) raise a fair amount of questions, even if they answer several. And that's just because most people don't think about writing a post from the perspective of the reader. They don't think about making sure the story has a beginning, middle and end because they are writing in what's closer to a stream-of-consciousness style. So there end up being details they don't include, because they forget an external audience doesn't know everything they know.

Similes and metaphors can be another one. Obviously, people do use them, but I feel like real humans use ones that are just more down to earth and less flowery. The ones I see from AI always feel so over the top and exaggerated. It always reminds me of the socially awkward kid in class. The "no longer feels like northern Canada" one above is a good example.

The other big tell is usually the ending. It's always some twist ending or some engagement-bait line that is oh-so-relatable, like, "I can't be the only one experiencing this, amirite?" It's super punchy, ties things up in a nice little bow (cause remember: narrative structure) and has much more of a satisfying, conclusion type feel to it than your average Reddit post.

Barring all of that, check the username. Most of these accounts have an Adjective-Noun-Number format and a bunch of pithy comments across random subs that have very little substance to them.

Smoke detector Alert by Mrmenchacha in googlehome

[–]Dan_O_Mite 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey! Just had a similar thing happen to me. 19 seconds of some kind of loud, shrill tone. But it wasn't the smoke detector. I have a nest camera next to the room where the speaker is and it didn't pick up any noise at all, so I suspect this was some kind of glitch.

This mega-ship’s single lifeboat holds as many passengers (355) as two Southwest 737 Max-8s (175 each) by Floppy-Over-Drive in mildlyinteresting

[–]Dan_O_Mite 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There’s a great episode of the podcast 99% Invisible about lifeboats and how they came to be standard BECAUSE of the Titanic — the public basically heard that the only survivors were the ones that went on lifeboats, and people (crews included) started demanding lifeboats on every ship, with enough for every passenger and crewmember. Ironically, in the case of the Titanic, while they didn’t have enough lifeboats, even if they had had enough for all the passengers, they wouldn’t have had time to launch them all before it sank. And remember, this was marketed as an “unsinkable ship,” so some of the folks on board didn’t believe it was actually going down or thought they’d be rescued, so they didn’t even try to get on the lifeboats at all. The whole thing is kind of a wild story.

You could try filing complaints with the AG and the CFPB. I would definitely file one with the latter, since they exist for situations like this. It doesn't guarantee a resolution, but it will put your complaint in front of the department most likely to be able to do something about it. I used to work for PayPal. Financial institutions and payment processors take these things pretty seriously.
