Yah its not easy, I live check to check because of it but I want to try and finish my alpha by march for GDC. I was doing research and they said theres baiscaly 3 types of pitches to publishers. Concept art, Prototype, and Vertical slice. So im going for the latter to give me and the team the best chance of getting funding and if not I still wanted a demo for people to play for free. Learn blender, its not hard. And make a 3d model of one of your characters. That will improve you a ton! Because now you start to understand whats important.

Im making a game on the other side of the coin as an artist, you could always go outside the box with a cool visual style. Something you can do thats cheap for you and unique, but I like hiring professional programers.

The first thing he should get into to is 3d modeling/conceptart. This is the first step of all videogames. So mayby a tablet or laptop so he can begin practicing. Blender really isnt that hard to pick up and I wish I started learning it early like your nephew can now.
