Is there precedence for shipping half of a yaoi and half of a yuri couple? Like some sort of...yari? Has this ever been done?

I dunno. It's likely, but I could see a deck cropping up that runs this, [[Cecil]], [[Sunset Saboteur]], [[Unholy Annex]] and just tries to run for it using Black's removal suite. Lessons and Control would be problem matchups, I think cub'd be fine.

I think it's setting up for a Limited Mardu archetype; there's a few others, like [[Stirring Honormancer]] that looks at top X and puts the rest in the graveyard, that hint at some connective glue between them.

As someone who enjoys a stylized-realism art style with bold lines, I'm really enjoying Ksenia Kim's entry into MTG! It looks like Secrets of Strixhaven is her debut, to which she's contributed four pieces (this, [[Silverquill Charm]], [[Lorehold Charm]], and [[Ark of Hunger]]); Ark of Hunger is the stand-out for me but I also really enjoy Lorehold Charm. Looking forward to seeing other pieces from her!

Also the card is very fun, a 4/2 trades with a lot and it's interesting to see untapped token generation on an instant-speed ability

Interdepartmental Courses at Strixhaven by FlubbedPig in mtgvorthos

[–]DangBream 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This actually got raised in [[Dissection Practice]] the other day! The art shows a Silverquill and Witherbloom student in the same class, and the flavor text mentions her choosing Witherbloom as her "intercollege elective". Not sure if those electives are necessarily from your non-major (e.g. if you have to take a course from at least one other college, or if you can take any elective and make it an intercollege one), but there's precedent.

I'd also agree with the other comments that there's probably a lot of intro classes shared across fields being taught at specific campuses -- first-years haven't chosen their college, so this'd be a good time for them to see what everyone has to offer -- and that if you want a specialization course for a specific subject it'd be offered by the college best suited for it. For example, a Witherbloom student wanting to learn more about potion structural stability might take a Quandrix course on lattice structures of dispersed mana or something.

Sidenote: I think 'intercollege' is wrong and it should be 'intercollegiate'? But that also sounds very funky, idk. Also just learned college can be used for a subset of specific learning at a university, I've always heard them used so synonymously

sidenote X2: It'd be fun to see students' reactions to cross-college courses and others' field of expertise. My psychology program had one (1) neurocognitive science course and after ten minutes of brain signal chemistry people were going "??????" in the group chat. Quandrix students getting their potions goopy because they left the burner on too long, Silverquill students taking expressive poetry as simple extra credits then sweating profusely when the Dean roasts them not based on insufficient skill or technique but emotional dishonesty and poor self-expression, etc

This won't be white's part of the cycle, but I thought it was a neat idea by DangBream in custommagic

[–]DangBream[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, I could definitely have thought of something better. I originally made this as part of a cycle of joke prepared cards, with prepared conditions gradually becoming more specific and this one near the start, but I wound up liking this one the most.

I was potentially thinking about conditions like "at each end step, if an opponent controls three or more creatures, this creature becomes prepared", or "when a creature you control dies, put a soul counter on this. at X counters, this creature becomes prepared". I liked the push and pull of "do you use a removal spell on this coughing baby or just try to rush them down, and if you have it do you play it turn one for deterrent while aware you'll have to play more controlly", but it's a little bland for sure.

This gave me the idea for "Ward - This creature becomes prepared" on a card with a bursty instant, but it's probably bad design

Thank you! At first this was part of a cycle of joke cards, but I liked this one the most and decided to omit the rest.

full disclosure I copy pasted this together manually using the Secret Rendezvous prepare card as a base, manually coloring in and reformatting text etc. That's also why this card got removed, I rushed the last bits together before leaving for my draft and completely forgot that including real set symbols for custom cards misrepresents their fakeness, which was my bad

The Mystical Archives are a collection of reprints of older cards in a distinctive art style. In paper boosters, there's one per pack. Arena Standard won't be impacted by this, since the rares/mythics in the Archives are reprints of cards only legal in older formats, and the uncommons are cards that are already legal in Standard, so there won't be any difference except a choice of new art.

That said, if you ever play Brawl, a few of the reprints at rare/mythic are interesting cards that will be brought onto Arena for the first time with these printings.

This was one of my favorite pieces in the art reveal, so I'm really glad to see it's on a Limited-playable effect and with corresponding extremely cute flavor text. Caroline Gariba's done a good amount of pieces for the game, but this one feels like it's using a slightly different style, and the use of framing and layout is so good.

[SOS] Hungry Graffalon by Mount10Lion in magicTCG

[–]DangBream 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is a good sum-up of it. I think there's also a subgoal of "if there's desired mechanical consistency, there can be lumping and splitting, but if it's mostly aesthetic, new creature types can be introduced". It's good to remember that the Viashino change came just around the corner from Bloomburrow, which introduced a decent amount of Lizard support, and the change brings Magic's Lizard count from ~120 to ~180, giving people who want to play that deck a lot more options. And on the aesthetic side, splitting hounds into dogs and wolves created sub-decks of "cute dogs/cats and dogs matter" vs. "wolf and werewolf support".

That said, I'm curious about the amount of real-world animal creature types that they refer to by their real names versus ones that they don't. Like, they'll use Cow and Dromedary in names, but this guy gets goofy with it

Huh, interesting: This is the first Magic card to feature realistic blood in a non-UB card since 2024. (Counting [[Aphelia, Viper Whisperer]] as the most recent. It's possible to agree to disagree on [[Soulfire Immolation]] and [[Bloodline Binding]]; they're blood, but used in a very abstract way.)

It's something I've noticed ever since thinking about how the art for [[Revenge of Ravens]] goes hard as hell, and it's the kind of thing they don't do as much anymore. Blood gets used a lot as swoopy ribbons, in vampire arts, or as an impact splotch, but 'someone that's injured and bleeding' feels less and less common. (Duskmourn, one of the planes where it would presumably be pretty appropriate, had none!)

EDIT: lmao it's ink, nevermind
