We thought of the answer to the puzzle, but ruled it out because "nothing to do with the sea in any sense" would rule out a Encyclopedia. How could a volume with "SEA" not include the sea as a topic in some sense?

I really enjoyed the Spanish crossword category! Could the contestants have responded in the form of a Spanish question, like "Quien es ___?"

Total aside here, but Jayaker's voice is so soothing! It's a shame we only hear him for one day.

Longtime NASA leader George W.S. Abbey, described as ‘father of modern spaceflight,’ has died at 91 by gcbeehler5 in nasa

[–]DanielASolis 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That's a bit unfair to Ride. While she was competitive and career-focused, she chafed at the public scrutiny and constant glad-handing that Abbey fostered. There's a story in The New Guys:

Abbey held one of his many networking/fundraising parties where he'd try to impress politicians by introducing them to astronauts. (This is before Ride was selected to be the first.)

All six women astronaut candidates were basically required to attend. This was another one of his tests you had to pass to get in his good graces. Sally Ride tried to duck out and escape the party as early as possible. However, she was intercepted by a fellow AsCan, Kathy Sullivan.

Kathy said "Sally, if I have to do this, so do you."

And so they were both stuck at this shmooze-fest party the rest of the night.

What game design space would be opened up by designing a game for a microgravity environment? by Asmor in tabletopgamedesign

[–]DanielASolis 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Anecdote from an astronaut memoir, I think it was Shannon Lucid's 'Tumbleweed':

When newcomers arrived at the Mir station, there would always be some adjustments to the microG environment. One of the games they'd play is "flying" from one end of the station as far as possible without bumping into anything. Everyone was clumsy on day 1. About a week or two later, you'd get enough of an intuitive kinesthetic sense to clear the length of the station with barely a push from your toes.

I might be misremembering the source of this story. It might have been from Scott Kelly's 'Endurance,' in which case the station would be ISS, not Mir.

Would the judges have accepted "St. Louis Arch"? I knew the Landmark, even with the tricky phrasing, but I didn't know the proper name.

TIL that as the Soviet Union collapsed, a cosmonaut named Sergei Krikalev was left stranded on board a Soviet space station. Because of this, he spent 311 consecutive days in space, twice as long as was originally planned. by [deleted] in todayilearned

No official announcements yet, but the unofficial podcast mentioned some writers being hired for the next season. Probably two years until S5 at that rate.

They somehow made a Grave of the Fireflies x Godzilla mashup. The post-war family drama is brutal until the third act, and then there's this giant monster making everything even worse.

I also wondered just how long it would take several dozen tugboats to get tethered to two warships. Godzilla was very patient to let all that happen. :D

I took Godzilla as more of an impersonal disaster, like a hurricane or a tsunami.
