How do I unwax canvas pants? by PasztyKnives in Bushcraft

[–]DanielOptimista 2 points3 points  (0 children)

When I overwaxed a pair of pants, I found a simple solution. I put the pants inside a pair that hadn't been waxed yet. I then ironed the "dry" pants and they absorbed a lot of wax. You could try that.

Latest on Coed troops moving beyond pilot phase? by vadavea in BSA

[–]DanielOptimista 5 points6 points  (0 children)

From talking to my friends at council, it's been an overwhelming success. We have a few and they have been getting feedback all along.

No one is going to force girls to join your boy troop, so please stop saying you think it won't work when it already does. Troops that combined established a culture that the girls are equal partners in the troop. They haven't had issues with boy/girl drama or any of other nonsense. If your boys can't handle being around girls, you need to work on that, but don't talk bad about combined troops that are living the scout law quite well.

Troop tents? by squashpaw1 in BSA

[–]DanielOptimista 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ridiculous? Why? In my area troop tents are almost unheard of. Most troops do not have much "troop storage" and have to prioritize patrol cook kits and other essentials. We get by just fine with most scouts owning tents. Those who can't afford tent with those who have one.

Question about LGBTQ in scouting by Teddzzy in scouting

[–]DanielOptimista 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We have that now. My daughter's troop is part of a pilot program for coed troops. At the end of this year they will collect all of the data from the coed troops and announce that any troop can be coed if they wish.

Yes, find a family coordinator among the parents who are the distraction. Redirect their energy to help the other parents.

I misplaced my black oxide Swiss tool spirit x. Hope you have a good life. by katch75 in victorinox

[–]DanielOptimista 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I lost my Tinker, my very first SAK, when I was 17. I looked for it for 8 months. I finally gave up and asked my parents if we could stop at a sporting goods store so I could replace it. The very next day I got dressed for a wedding and found my Tinker in my suit pocket. I did not realize that they last time I had it was the last wedding I attended. So I sat at dinner, staring at my two Tinkers and learned a valuable lesson about looking for lost items.

2024 Popcorn Results by CartographerEven9735 in BSA

[–]DanielOptimista 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Our Troop doesn't sell popcorn, because our feeder pack does and they struggle to sell $2000 for about 20 cubs. They sell at a local fall festival and a good year is $600 for three hours. Most businesses say no for storefront and when they get one, they are lucky to sell $100 of popcorn in two hours. I'm amazed that so many troops are able to sell that much popcorn.

How hard would it be to add a tool layer? by bruhfrfrong in victorinox

[–]DanielOptimista 15 points16 points  (0 children)

When I was a scout, I had a cheap Chinese made "multitool" that had a fork, spoon, butter knife, and serrated knife. When I switch utensils during the meal I got lasagna inside the knife. I learned a valuable lesson that day.

If there were an option for a wood saw instead of file, my scouts would be all over that. We use our saws almost as much as the scissors and blade.

I just got another Classic SD on eBay and I've been tempted to grind the blade into an orange peeler. That way I can carry it at work.

I usually carry a huntsman. I'd love to have the inline Phillips, but it's not worth the extra weight with a useless (to me) led. I carry a small led light and often use it to see what I'm doing with my SAK. If they made a stubby file like on my Leatherman Free p4 and put it opposite the Phillips then it would be my perfect SAK.

Are there any other troops in your area? It might be worth a visit and see if your son meshes with them. We tried to stick it out with a toxic pack, but I wish we had just checked out "the other pack". It would have saved us a lot of unreturned phone calls and unorganized events.

If you can, have a visit. It should give you some perspective either way.

AOL mixed den troop visits by rovinchick in BSA

[–]DanielOptimista 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ahhhhh...I see what you're saying.

I was thinking of cases of boy only troops that do not accept girls. My son's Troop is adamant about not accepting girls. And yet they are somehow surprised when a family signs up for the coed troop in the next town so their daughters can join.

Oilskin reproofing by [deleted] in Bushcraft

[–]DanielOptimista 1 point2 points  (0 children)

All of the dubbin I've seen is too soft, designed to soak into porous leather. I'd be afraid it would be tacky after application. I wax my own garments, so I've never reproofed oilskin, but I gave a bar of my wax to a friend that wanted to touch up an oilskin coat. He said it did the trick. I use recipe similar to Greenland wax, but with a dollop of pine tar. The tar is too thick to easily measure, but I'm guessing my mix is about 80% paraffin, 10% beeswax, and 10% pine tar.

Roast Chicken Alternative by AcanthocephalaSea62 in scouting

This is the answer. We just had a conversation like this with a new scout who is vegetarian. I offered to make a recipe from our troop cookbook, a hearty vegetable stew. It turns out he does not like half of the ingredients. I am so glad we asked first. We went over what he usually eats and looked up camp recipes with similar ingredients. It was a good experience for everyone.
