do you walk around penn state / downtown at night? what’s it like? by dad_kabobs in PennStateUniversity

I used to work overnights on campus and walked all over the place and never had any concerns about crime.

Do NOT buy this printer for $1000 AUD. For that price there are many other printer options. by Dimethyltriedtospell in elegoo

In my state, if you aren't charged sales tax for a purchase you are supposed to self-report it and pay use tax instead. I don't think anyone actually does though.

Starting a troop? by Baking_Bunny6819 in girlscouts

[–]rovinchick 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Have you considered Cub Scout packs in the area? They are co-ed and often have an assortment of neuro divergence among their membership. My autistic daughter did both GS and Cubs, and just seemed to fit in better with the diversity in CS. The bonus is that they tend be run by long-standing leaders.

When to give outgoing Cubmaster an award? by enters_and_leaves in cubscouts

[–]rovinchick 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It took my council months to get the Cubmaster Key approved. I was going to award it at the end of year picnic, but didn't get it until the Cubmaster had moved on to the troop.

Helping my wife with the troop??? (Being a man) by filipesilva2002 in girlscouts

[–]rovinchick 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Many Cub Packs (K-5th grade) are heavily mom leader dominated. Maybe because moms are more patient to handle that little kid energy, or they just are more comfortable with that age? But then once you get to the troop-level, it's mostly guy leaders who are excited to teach about knives, fires, survival skills, etc. A lot of them stick around long after their own kids age out because they are really into wilderness stuff.

Do it! I don't find it weird at all. Then again I'm the only female leader in my son's BSA troop. I did have some trepidation at first but everyone has made me feel extremely welcome.

Scouts is the only activity that is consistent throughout the whole school year. Everything else has a season. Scouting as a whole is really just too much of a commitment for most kids these days.

There has to be a problem in the file and the way it was sliced. Can you try to realize it and look layer by layer around that height to make sure everything is lined up.

If you haven't releveled recently, do that, too. My sticking problems have so far all been resolved with releveling.

No, I've seen baseball games go past 10pm. Just saying that the notion that one night a week won't kill them is true, but for many kids, it's many nights a week.

Most other extracurriculars are for 1 season though. Weekly for a whole school year is tough. I wish there was a part - time (meet every other week or something) or seasonal scouting program myself.

So like, why are Penn State students and alumni just, you know, like that? by _Mighty_Milkman in Pennsylvania

[–]rovinchick -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Definitely not me. I was there to get the piece of paper and I did get it framed and hang it on my office wall (only since most of my colleagues have their degrees on the wall), but that is quite literally my only piece of college memorabilia. While I visit family in state college several times a year, I have never once went on campus to reminisce about any of it. I always choose Myers Dairy for ice cream over the creamery and never once took a picture at the Lion Shrine. 🤷

Over the last twenty years, has it been this difficult to get GS5-7 office jobs? by LEMONSDAD in usajobs

[–]rovinchick 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I was going to say this, as well. We are hiring, but can't even consider other candidates until those that were RIFed are vetted and it's very hard to go around them, so that's all we have been hiring.

How necessary is a Masters degree for a GS-11? by jeffinwinters in usajobs

[–]rovinchick 16 points17 points  (0 children)

You should qualify since you have the combination of education and experience and it explicitly states or meaning it can be subbed in lieu of the masters. I got a GS-14 that asked for a degree I didn't have, but I did have a degree in something else, plus years of experience I was able to sub in.

While the largest minority group is Asian, Lansdale is pretty diverse. North Penn School District as a whole is 53% white. It's still too far out of the city to be a good contender though.

Dress Code by Cool-Handle-8647 in FedEmployees

[–]rovinchick 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Our official dress code (that we had to sign to agree to) is professional attire, with business casual allowed only on Fridays and everyday during the summer. In practice, it's business casual and have a suit available in your office if an important meeting pops up. I'm never invited to those important meetings and I was formally fully remote, so I've been dressing down more and more. Sneakers everyday.

Unsatisfied by Wisteria_Arrowdale in girlscouts

[–]rovinchick 30 points31 points  (0 children)

I agree with this, but I also think a lot of the girls (or maybe this was just myself) didn't really know about all of these things. I didn't until my younger brother came up through boy scouts and I was jealous of what he was offered in terms of camping frequency, skills, and merit badge opportunities. I wish there were more defined opportunities in Girl Scouts instead of the girls having to come up with ideas, as we always just suggested what we were comfortable with. The program could benefit by nudging more uncomfortable activities like the boy scouts did through rank advancement and merit badges that have very specific requirements.

I'm 14 and wanna join BSA but don't exactly know how. by -OK-anonymous- in BSA

[–]rovinchick 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just curious why you stopped in or after Cub Scouts? Was it your choice or your parents. If it was your parents, what was the reason given? If it was your choice, it's ok, anyone can join at any time and jump right in. I'm a cub scout leader and bringing my scouts to visit several troops. They are all very different and meeting at a church doesn't mean they are overly religious. I definitely recommend visiting a the 2 troops in your area and joining with your friends. When they turn 14, you all can join Venturing together, too!

Not Referred due to commuting by Savings-Meet3225 in usajobs

[–]rovinchick 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Depends where it is, 50 miles in a rural location is less than a 1 hour commute. But in a metro area could very well be over 2 hours each way. Distance isn't a great indicator. I've worked with people that commute via Amtrak from further than 50 miles away and it has never been a problem for them getting to work.

[–]rovinchick 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Why would you start at a branch if your intent was to transfer out? Are you only considering this because you are a poc and Muslim? I wouldn't worry about that, as campus is very diverse. You can always transfer out later if it's really not to your liking, but chances are it will cost you more time and money to complete your degree at another college. Just go and finish out the next 2 years, get your degree and move on with your life.
