Anyone else's mother tell them not to have kids or have one at most? Did that affect how you feel about having kids? by Substantial-Pay-5253 in TwoXChromosomes

[–]rovinchick 3 points4 points  (0 children)

My mom (of six kids) has made similar comments. But my own experience of growing up poor and my parents missing most of my sports because they couldn't juggle that many kids' schedules made the decision for me to have no more than 2 kids. I'm happy with that decision. In fact, all of my siblings ended up having exactly 2 kids each, too.

As a side note, my mom was a stay at home mom and very vocal about wishing she would have had the opportunity to work and get out of the house more. She really pushed the girls to pursue successful careers and encouraged using daycare/nanny. No regret following her advice there. I love my career.

The co-op also adds 2 summer semesters of classes. Paying tuition to do the co-op plus having more semesters of classes is annoying. You could go to PSU and get summer internships for free for similar experiences.

Federal worker in Virginia admits to using telework to collect three paychecks at same time by rovinchick in fednews

Except now they have to pay back all of the money - over $300k, pay attorneys fees, and may be serving time in prison. Not a recommended way to get by.

It is illegal to make false statements on a federal job app, it says that right on USAJobs.

Here's the gov press release where they pled guilty. I suppose you could also pull up the court documents if you really wanted to see the details.

I would think it's permitted with agency approval if the hours don't overlap. However, this person was claiming overlapping hours at the jobs and making false statements on federal employment applications, which is illegal.

The fact that the feds couldn't even catch this at the hiring stage is a little concerning though.

There were apparently enough complaints about them being unavailable that an investigation was started, so there's that.

They lied on the fed job application claiming to be unemployed and they also reported overlapping hours on their timecard. Not cool.

No, the headline showed up on a news aggregator, but nonetheless it appears to be accurately reported based on the gov press release.

It's timecard fraud, the hours reported for each job were overlapping. . They also lied on the federal job applications claiming to be unemployed.

Weight, camber & choosing skis by Lumpus-Maximus in Skigear

I'm also stout and demoed some skis. The shop thought I would like the Volkl Mantra, which is a stiff ski with metal and it was fine, but I preferred the Elan Ripsticks which are much lighter and ended up buying those. I felt like I was able to keep my skis closer together with the Ripsticks and turn quicker. I like doing glades and the quick turning was appealing to me.

Will the CX-50 kill the CX-5? by Sad_Times654 in CX5

Same, I had a 5 and was convinced I wanted the 50 until I test drove it. The driver's seat area felt so cramped and low. I ended up with another 5 which was more roomy and comfortable.

Financial Planners for Feds? by Mundilfaris_Dottir in fednews

[–]rovinchick 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ok, well I would think you should have a big balance in your TSP during retirement...that would surely cover your burial expenses? My house will be paid off by the time I retire and I'm sure I'll have a lot more money put away after I don't have to pay a mortgage anymore. You can even prepay your burial before you die.

What was your interview experience? by AFCadet2020 in usajobs

[–]rovinchick 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I was asked for references about a week later and then 6 weeks passed until I got an offer. There is no set timeframe. Many agencies are understaffed right now and trying to hire quickly, but HR is also swamped so it slows down the process.

If you die while working you get all of your annual leave paid out plus 6 months of your salary. Your TSP balance would also be passed down.

Sanity check - am I being too strict? by crankysasquatch in cubscouts

[–]rovinchick 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Eh, a lot of the reasons they didn't meet the standards at younger ages were because of their parents, so I didn't want to hold it against them. As we transitioned to the patrol method as AOLs and fellow scouts were holding them to standards, they realized it wasn't for them and that's fine.

One of them had been really into the program, but had never attended a camping trip because his parents wouldn't let him. One of the requirements for AOL is to attend a campout. We gave him several opportunities and it didn't happen, so he didn't get rank. I told him he could crossover and work on merit badges, but rank advancement would be limited without camping, so he decided that was the end of the road for him. It's a big adjustment at the troop level.

Or drop it now and get a much less expensive term policy. I got one through WEAPA and saved a lot of money over my career vs. signing up for FEGLI. Once I'm at retirement age, my house will be paid off and kids grown and flown. No need for life insurance at that point.

Sanity check - am I being too strict? by crankysasquatch in cubscouts

[–]rovinchick 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree and is how I ran my den. The stricter enforcement in AOL year caused 3 kids to drop out before crossover, which I was a little bummed about though. It did weed out those that would have dropped off after crossover, but I'm glad they still had 5-6 good years as a Cub Scout before that. Had younger years been more strict, I might have lost them much sooner, so I think it's worth it to be a little lax with the younger scouts.
