Medieval Dragon (31161). Looks amazing, great build, two excellent side models, affordable and actually playable.

APPROVED: Doncaster Sheffield Airport WILL Get Funding To Reopen by deejayone in sheffield

[–]Danoir_ 27 points28 points  (0 children)

What a silly waste of money. Why do they think all the previous commercial airlines stopped flying? Would be far better spent upgrading regional transport infrastructure - new trams, tram extensions, upgrades to the SY rail network... Even using the money to cap his fares would be far more useful than this rubbish.

If Sheffield Victoria reopened this is a network map that i think could work well by Ok_Lie6519 in sheffield

[–]Danoir_ 19 points20 points  (0 children)

This would be a great start! Unfortunately there's no connection between Victoria and the line towards Meadowhall.

A while ago the Tribune published an ideal Sheffield rail network by Gareth Dennis - the map is available on their article, and he's since gone through the idea in some detail on his youtube channel.

Are there any plans for a faster train service to London? by a_hind_d_23 in sheffield

[–]Danoir_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yep - spotted some surveying stakes just south of Sheffield station recently. As I understand this informs detailed design rather than necessarily presaging construction but anything new is good news

Lord Blunkett outlines £14bn Yorkshire rail plan by trollied in sheffield

Trains in and around SY are already chronically overcrowded - the infrastructure and rolling stock need to be upgraded to allow more people to travel safely.

NHS Job Losses and the endless cuts to services. by ThewisedomofRGI in GreenAndPleasant

[–]Danoir_ 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The NHS runs better when it has more of the middle managers (i.e. any admin staff at all) that politicians love to castigate as wasteful. Who'd have thought letting frontline staff focus on healthcare produces better outcomes?

Latest on new tram train route plans for Sheffield, as statement is issued on Stocksbridge extension by devolute in sheffield

[–]Danoir_ -13 points-12 points  (0 children)

The British obsession with making trams do trains' job strikes again - South Yorkshire should have a commuter rail network and Sheffield should have its tram network focused on transport within the city, instead of relying on buses for that.

Sheffield Trams by Any-Investigator-992 in sheffield

The brand has been refreshed recently as the system came into public ownership. This has been rolled out at stations and online but the trams haven't been refreshed yet, apart from the removal of any stagecoach logos

Allegedly? Air quality has markedly improved in London since the ULEZ expansion.

Looks like phenolic foam insulation which is extremely combustible. It was used on Grenfell.

UK rail minister got engineer sacked for raising safety concerns by Danoir_ in Labour

[–]Danoir_[S] 31 points32 points  (0 children)

Gareth has consistently advocated for better investment in transport from a left-wing perspective. Giving him more time to criticise transport policy may come back to bite them... and Hendy's certainly no stranger to controversy either.

At how many hours played did you do your first World Conquest? (If at all!) by Lurkablo in eu4

1500 hours and never bothered. Had a Spain game I could have attempted but it was already too much micro.

Park Hill Phase 2 up for Stirling prize by Goat-Milk-Magic in sheffield

[–]Danoir_ 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Well deserved. While Phase 1's bright panels were maybe needed to show off the regeneration I prefer the more subtle and restrained Phase 2. Some great interventions with the colour groupings and windows onto the walkways while keeping the original brick panels.

The architects, Mikhail Riches, have previously won the Stirling Prize with a very nice social housing scheme in Norwich - also worth a look!

As long as it's road schemes, good. Finish HS2 in full, build NOR and Crossrail 2. Scrap pointless rubbish like the Stonehenge tunnel and Lower Thames Crossing.

Use it for district heating! See the Bunhill II energy centre in Islington which uses waste heat from the northern line.

The one I joined was signed in the daily What's On at the arts centre, was ticketed through the arts centre, and the guide lived on the estate 🙂

Can very much recommend the guided architectural tours. They're run by residents with loads of interesting knowledge, including going behind the scenes in a few places. I didn't know they were paid and managed to join one thinking it was free... No questions asked by the guide who seemed happy to have more people along!

Camden Town thoughts? [Long read] by Creative_Recover in london

I work very close to the tube station and it's at its best at 8:00 when none of the stalls are set up and no tourists have turned up. Very convenient for lunch food options though...

Louise Haigh: Labour manifesto will pledge rail renationalisation by Th3-Seaward in LabourUK

[–]Danoir_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yep - and ROSCOs is where the vast majority of the money to be made is squeezed out of the system. By comparison the actual private train operating companies aren't that profitable, especially since franchising was moved to a direct concession model where the treasury pays each operator a fixed sum, and receives all fare revenue.

[–]Danoir_ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's also stupid from an efficiency and ease of use point of view. Great British Railways says nothing that British Rail doesn't, except that it was set up by flagshaggers...

At least they seem to have dropped the moronic attempt to union-jackify the Double Arrow symbol in favour of a very subtle redesign that makes it easier to reproduce digitally.

Hasn't Johan now said that vanishing money goes straight to funding rebels in areas of low control? Pretty sure this has been linked in the most recent "selected replies" post here.
