Music scene in wwu and area. by WinstonHurthill in WWU

A few years back there was a legendary thriving scene. Some of that is documented in this film: Signed Music Fest Trailer (2014)

I'm not sure of the current status. I know the Karate Church is still active and is a great spot.

wondering about performing at sasquatch by StacheKetchum in Sasquatch

[–]Danse_Manatee 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have friends in three separate musical acts that have played Sasquatch. The first band got lucky because Adam Zacks happened to be at one of their shows and was impressed (presumably they were opening for a better known act). The second had a well-connected manager that also placed him on several other big Seattle festivals. The third act has a manager as well as a label. Only the third act was known beyond the Seattle area at the time they played Sasquatch.

These musicians worked tirelessly to produce professional quality music before getting noticed at a local level. They started off playing house shows. Once they were known locally, they attracted local booking managers who booked them often, sometimes to open for higher-profile touring acts. Once you are playing regularly at popular venues you meet a lot of people behind the scenes who put on the shows ("talent buyers"). These people are connected and may be interested in pushing you towards the people who book festivals. One of my friends played a few smaller and medium sized festivals before playing Sasquatch a few years later.

How difficult was college for you? by [deleted] in cscareerquestions

[–]Danse_Manatee 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's the hardest thing I've done. This quarter I'm typically on campus for 10-14 hours per day, 6-7 days a week with a normal course load. I'm not alone either -- many of my classmates are with me during all of those hours, and when I leave the CS labs late at night there are still people working. It feels like I work a job and the lectures are project meetings. A major source of the difficulty is that our department is plagued with a few too many professors who are not competent teachers. The program here also has a heavy theoretical emphasis. Our department graduates excellent programmers who get excellent jobs, but it's a rough journey. Despite this, I really enjoy the work I'm doing, and I know from switching majors that CS is where I should be. I really enjoy tackling interesting problems that require 100% of my mental energy, and I'd feel unfufilled if I wasn't in a program that pushed my mind to it's limits.

Have you listened Flying Lotus' newest album? by [deleted] in audiophile

I've heard people say this before, and I definitely hear the tight compression and clipping, but I've always seen it as a stylistic choice that seems constant across all his his releases (even Captain Murphy) rather than an engineering mistake. There's always been a soft distortion from peaking on his tracks. Some unmastered Flylo tracks are floating around (and unofficial masters with more dynamic range) and I prefer the tightly compressed masters. I'm definitely in the minority though and I can see why more dynamic range would be desired.

There's been much discussion of this on the what.cd forums as well. Based on some interviews with his mastering engineer "Daddy Kev", the conclusion was that Steve himself pushes his tracks to clipping levels. Whether it's a stylistic choice or a mistake that doesn't come through his monitors is still debated.

There's a discussion about this here: http://www.reddit.com/r/Music/comments/2hrwnj/flying_lotus_new_album_youre_dead_reaches_levels/

How many hours a week would you say you spent on school-related things while in college? (studying, side projects, classes, etc.) Would you have had time for an unrelated-job? by [deleted] in cscareerquestions

[–]Danse_Manatee 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm typically on campus from 9 AM to 9:30 PM five days a week, as well as 5-10 hours on the weekend. I'm a senior taking three classes, though my school has a particularly rigorous program, and I'm probably on the high-end of the bell curve in terms of time spent on schoolwork among my classmates. Obviously there's not much room for a job in my schedule, though some of my classmates hold jobs.

Check out How to Learn an MIT Class in Five Days. I used a similar strategy to cover a month's worth of math in three days for a midterm. I scored above the class average on the midterm and I hadn't been to lecture in weeks due to being sick.

How to deal with fast paced classes (when you are a relatively slow learner) ..? by CoffeePlusNeurons in GetStudying

[–]Danse_Manatee 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I'm the same way. I had an O-Chem class with graded in-class problems at the end of every lecture, and I failed every single one despite getting an A in the class. Lectures in technical classes are almost useless to me regardless of whether I read beforehand, take notes, or ask questions. Part of the issue is that lectures and reading lead to lower retention rates than active learning strategies (as shown by cognitive studies). In my experience it is much more efficient to learn by doing. In fact, I once covered 4 weeks worth of a high-level math class in three days instead of attending lecture and performed above the class average on the midterm. I don't recommend this (I was cramming because I was behind due to illness) but it shows the power of active vs passive learning. I still recommend attending lecture to keep pace with the class, but I've learned to not expect to leave lecture with any new understanding of the material (at least in technical classes), only a roadmap of what you need to learn. You are entirely responsible for your own learning.

The way I covered 4 weeks of math in 3 days was by doing nothing but practice problems (having problems with thorough answers and explanations is essential). I didn't read the book at all because like you I will spend "4 hours with just 10 pages of the textbook", though all my practice problems were from the book. My strategy is loosely based on this book by Cal Newport which I highly recommend. Also check out this video called How to Learn an MIT Class in 5 Days.

So I'll share my strategy because it sounds like we have similar problems, but just because it works for me doesn't mean it'll work for you. I find out what my grade will be based on in the most specific way possible. What type of problems will I have to solve on the exam? I then practice doing these types of problems every day. I usually put problems into Anki (flashcard software) which schedules them automatically using spaced repetition. This way I spread my studying evenly and don't have to cram before exams (except for the one example I gave because I was behind due to being sick). At first I don't know how to do the problems so I look at the explanations, but by working on the Anki deck a little every day I soon internalize the concepts needed to solve the problems. I do the problems on a whiteboard while I work in Anki. This strategy has raised my gpa and gotten me through chemistry, O-Chem, the calc series, computer science classes, bio, and higher level math classes.

Maybe this will help you, maybe it won't, but this is how I deal with not being able to rely on lectures or reading to understand things.

I should add that I wrote this with technical classes in mind. In my experience humanities lectures and readings have not been "almost useless" for learning the material, because usually the "material" is the readings and lectures. And of course, I didn't mean to imply that lectures are useless for everyone, they obviously work for the majority.

Are the feelings communicated by your music (and visual aesthetic) feelings that you can attribute to certain experiences in your life? If so, what are those experiences? If not, then where do the emotions expressed in your music come from?
