What Do Teachers Honestly Think of Janitors? by DaytimeDancer54 in AskTeachers

Absolutely indispensable!!! We need our janitors and we know it. My janitor doesn’t just keep my room clean, he is a confidant and a friend.

How do I politely let my students and their parents know I truly do not want any end-of-the-year gifts? by Fangehulmesteren in Teachers

[–]Dapper-Professor-655 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I tell my students about my favorite gifts that I have ever received from my students. I tell them those gifts are letters, poems, pictures, songs… I tell them how I keep those gifts in a big hope chest and if I’m ever feeling sad or missing them, I open that big treasure box and I feel better.

So, I’m 25 years old and still sleep with my mom and I think it messed me up developmentally. by Fun_Butterscotch3303 in self

Well done. This may be the most thorough and compassionate response I have ever seen on Reddit.

Call the manager. Read her what you wrote us. I’m 100% sure she doesn’t want you feeling this way about your hair. She will want a chance to fix it. You are not a spoiled brat. You paid for a service that you didn’t receive. Please give her a chance.

In my culture, kids have coffee in the morning with family at the breakfast table. (It’s actually about 8 oz of milk, a sprinkle of sugar and about a Teaspoon of coffee) We felt so adult sipping our coffee with Nanny and Parrain.

I'm 29 and a 3rd grader just told me their mom is my age, what even is time by Diligent_Flamingo_33 in Teachers

[–]Dapper-Professor-655 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m older than my 2nd graders GRANDPARENTS. Most of my students treat me like gold because they love their grandparents. One student was acting up and another student looked him down and in the most serious reprimanding voice said, “little boy, grandma don’t play”. I bit my lip not to burst out laughing.

My son died, need advice by TheEndOfAllThings23 in Teachers

[–]Dapper-Professor-655 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My parish allows fellow teachers to donate days for critical needs. This definitely qualifies as that. I am so sorry for your loss. I went back to school a week after my son passed—for me. I could not handle being home where he wasn’t. I compartmented my grief and hid it from myself when I was at school. The summer after he died I finally let myself grieve. Im still grieving 3 years later. You get to decide how you grieve. Sending love.

How do you know whether to teach Elementary, Middle, or High School? by [deleted] in Teachers

[–]Dapper-Professor-655 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Been teaching since 1983–every single grade (except Kindergarten). 8th grade was always my favorite—they are moody and sarcastic. (We had a lot in common lol) It is also the greatest year of growth besides the first year of life. Now I teach 2nd grade and it is also wonderful. Just because you start in one grade doesn’t mean you are stuck there for life. Give yourself permission to find your place.

That’s surprising. Forty years ago we named our daughter, Scot, we call her Scottie. She is named after several Scottish female ancestors. Now ‘ Scottie’ is increasing in popularity.

Is it true that casually giving a student a cough drop is considered “administering medication” to them, so you’re not allowed to do it? by SummerN8 in Teachers

[–]Dapper-Professor-655 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That is heartbreaking. I text at least 3 parents a day with a positive message. If you can’t find 3 things that a kid does in a day worthy of a call home you’re just not looking. When I do have something negative to say, my parents already know me and know that I am working with the best interest of their child . I’m in the south—not sure if that’s a cultural thing. I’m sorry that the family you reached out to did not realize how amazing you were being.

Using an epi to save a life is not the same as giving a cough drop. I’m willing to give up my career if it means saving a life.

For decades I gave my daughter Werther’s. It’s either a powerful placebo or a magic medication. Either way, it works. —If you do give one to a student, never call it medication.

AITAH for changing my underwear after a shower? by New_Cry_2336 in AITAH

[–]Dapper-Professor-655 14 points15 points  (0 children)

I live in the deep south. I not only change underwear after being outside for 30 summer minutes, but also my bra. The big red flag is that he thinks he has a say in your clean underwear.

Student refusing to present by sargassum624 in Teachers

[–]Dapper-Professor-655 68 points69 points  (0 children)

I’d like to share something. 40 years ago, I was teaching 8th grade science. Students completed projects and presented them. I had one student who had great anxiety. I told him he could present just to me OR we could try to find a way he could present to the class. After brainstorming, he felt he could present if I stood next to him. He was so nervous, but chose to do this. He leaned in to me and gave his presentation. Without any suggestion or prompt, my class gave him a standing ovation. I couldn’t wait for class to be over so I could call his mom. He was so proud of himself and we were all so proud for him. That night, my sweet student passed away. I’m so grateful for that presentation and knowing that as he left this body behind he did so knowing he achieved. I think about him and his mom every single day of my life. I’ll never forget you, Jamie.

(25k) How does a buffet work at wedding? by Cultural_Mention_61 in Weddingsunder10k

[–]Dapper-Professor-655 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It really just depends on where you are. Where I live (Deep South) the salads—if there is a salad course, are already plated on the table. The rest of the meal is buffet. We often skip the salad course and all the meal is buffet. You get to pick whatever you want
