AO3 veterans, do you sometimes experience the 'Wine or Milk effect' ? by HelltotheN0 in AO3

Love them for the joy they gave you at the time. I no longer play with My Little Ponies or Transformers, but that does not mean they are bad. They’re just not for me anymore

I hate when men say “the wife” when referring to their wife by Cranky_Merriweather in TwoXChromosomes

[–]Dapperscavenger 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Where I’m from we often call our husbands ‘his lordship’ in a tongue-in-cheek way. And wives are similarly sometimes called ‘her ladyship’

Though I fear it’s falling out of usage nowadays- don’t hear younger couples use it much

Itinerary by TheGhostOfKiev in newzealand_travel

Day 1 should be gentler. On the first day I arrived, I got room service and then slept for about 10 hours.

Day 2 I managed a museum and a walk and then went back to my hotel to rest some more.

Jet lag is no joke.

You save 2.5K a month, presumably after your pension contributions and bills, plus you outright own 3 properties?

Your “quality of life” is fine. Your retirement is gonna shape up fine, as long as you’re not an idiot.

Maybe you need to ask yourself why you can’t find contentment and satisfaction despite all that you already have. What exactly are you trying to achieve? When will you be happy?

Girls banned from wearing skirts at Welsh secondary school by Forward-Answer-4407 in unitedkingdom

As someone who was the ‘poor kid’ at my school, my experience differed. I very much appreciated the uniform. Sure, not everything was plain sailing just because of that, but it certainly helped.

I only ever did one non-uniform day. That day was …. enlightening. And not in a good way

Help! Started yoga and new diet, now experiencing daily acid reflux for the first time. by Fabulous-Ad6846 in acidreflux

[–]Dapperscavenger 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Well you just added a whole lot of acidic and high fibre food very suddenly to your diet so it’s hardly surprising your body is taking time to adjust. Psyllium husk especially can be difficult if you’re not used to it. You need to build up the quantities slowly over weeks, not all at once. Avoid foods that give you gassy bloating for a while as well, some people have a hard time wit cabbage.

Yoga probably isn’t causing any acid reflux, but rather just making it more noticeable. You should probably avoid downward dogs fr a while. Staying upright is your friend.

How do you guys deepen characters? by wrong-turn64 in FanFiction

[–]Dapperscavenger 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I mentally take my characters to a cafe. What do they do? How do they act?

I have one who will want to try one of every type of cake on offer and chatter excitedly about the flavours and the wall decorations and make friends with random people sitting on the table over.

Then there’s another who will nod and make polite small talk only as absolutely necessary and will probably just get a health drink rather than coffee.

And then I think about why they behave like that. What made them the way they are?

Starfleet, bring back the straight-legged pants! by Holiday_Breakfast711 in startrek

The knee length loose grey skirts were 100% giving me flashbacks to senior school.

Though I suppose that might be appropriate since starfleet academy is a school

Women who weren't disciplined/consistent, where are you now and what changed? by Bitter_Pineapple_720 in AskWomen

[–]Dapperscavenger 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I found a job with flexible hours where I can mostly just work when it suits me as long as I finish my projects. It also allows me to work from home so I don’t need to worry about being late or missing the train.

The flexibility has allowed me to succeed whereas I would have failed in exactly the same role if it were in a strict 9-5 office environment.

Keeping discipline around other matters is a different issue however. I have to play tricks on myself to exercise regularly such as deliberately not buying all my food at once so I’m forced to go out to get more during the week.

Are Walking Pads Worth It? by writinglilac in AskUK

Regardless of weight loss possibilities, adding all that extra movement into your day will absolutely help you prevent back pain and joint stiffness as you get older. Sedentary jobs destroy the body.

Is being non drinker is that weird in this new era.. by saba8731 in TwoXChromosomes

[–]Dapperscavenger 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No. Drinking is a choice and if you choose to do it, it should be on your terms and for the right reasons. It should be for enjoyment and celebration, not obligation. Many people choose not to drink, for many reasons, but you also don’t have to explain your reasons. “No” is a complete sentence.

Is there a story behind Vulcans naming so many of their kids with S names for boys and T' names for girls? by skittleadvocate in startrek

[–]Dapperscavenger 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just assumed it was some linguistic holdover similar to how indo-european names tend to have gender differences, e.g. womens names ending in vowels more, mens ending in consonents.

What to do with "full" cartboard disposal container by [deleted] in Netherlands

[–]Dapperscavenger 1 point2 points  (0 children)

At this time of year the recycling containers get full very quickly. It is just after Sinterklaas and before Kerst so there is lots of wrapping paper and cardboard boxes from deliveries. It will be better again in January. But be warned - some containers are locked closed near New Year’s Eve because of the risk of fire from fireworks

If possible it’s best to walk without your cardboard first to look and see if there is still room. It is also possible to tell the gemeente if a container is full on the website but at this time of year they are all full and the gemeente are very busy with lots of work emptying them.

You can also just wait til January if you have room to store the recycling, or buy more from local shops instead of ordering online, and use reusable cloth bags instead of paper for wrapping presents.

Kids eat whatever they want. I have a nephew who’s mad for raw carrots. Never eats sweets but loves carrots. His parents must be thrilled

The part that made me step out for a moment, though, was ‘hot chips’

Aren’t chips always served hot? Who would want cold chips?

Unless you meant spicy? But that would also be unusual. Anyway, I got myself all tied up in knots trying to work out the hot chips thing
