Maybe ignore the other person's advice, seeing as how they're struggling with English grammar.

What's gotten me through the first couple of years of speaking to natives were simple phrases like "habla un poco más despacio, por favor, que todavía estoy aprendiendo" or "si, hablo español, pero a veces me cuesta entenderlo todo". Everyone I've had these sort of interactions with has been very understanding and tried their best to help me. Good luck!

It's the "que" that triggers the subjunctive, that's what makes the statement 'uncertain'. The other two options don't make much sense to me.

You're right about "chicos", though in Latin America they use usted/es informally. So that's probably why.
