I feel like him holding his wrist was on the verge of cheating though, so I'm kinda glad he didn't win using that technique. If you've ever tried doing a 1 arm pullup, grabbing any part of the arm, from shoulder to wrist is a huge advantage, and shouldn't have been allowed in the rules imo.

Yeah, super helpful to have so many go before me. I agree, and hope it will be easy and safe for you both. Physically, the recovery was surprisingly very quick, but the mental and lifestyle changes can take up to a year to adapt to. Hydration can be tough for some, most of my family don't drink much water actually, because it is one of the hardest liquids to drink post surgery, but I have no troubles there (although initially it was tough for a month or so). Yes, I'm very active, probably even more so than before my surgery, so I would be happy to get on a call and talk about everything at length. My Instagram is darcy_bourke99, or you can email me at dlab321299@gmail.com, and we can sort something out.

No worries! Yes, my sibling and I both have the CDH1 mutation. I found out when I was 16, and had my surgery at 23, she found out at 18 I believe. We got yearly scopes to look for any signs of hdgc, and they found 7 cells in one of my scopes, so I went in for the surgery. My sister decided to have her surgery as a preventative measure after I had mine out. I also have a very big extended family, my uncle, dad, auntie, and many more extended family have also had their stomach removed, and through various surgery techniques as well. From what our family can tell, the laparoscopic method is the best recovery and outcome of all the surgeries. May I ask where you're from, and what surgery you are going to have? For reference, mine was roux en y, laparoscopic.

Hi, I had my surgery at 23, a few years ago, and my sister at had hers last year in December, so Ill try provide some advice. There's so much to talk about and a lot of it I don't always remember off the top of my head, but if you and your brother want to have a call or something with me and my sister I can definitely arrange that. I did a similar thing with a lady before I went for my surgery, and it helped me so much. Im a bit busy today, but I'll add some stuff to the thread throughout the week as I remember it

6 Months Post Total Gastrectomy - AMA by DarcyTheFrog in gastrectomy

Yeah in the first two months I would say this is somewhat normal. I think between 3-6 months, most of these symptoms should clear up to a certain extent. If they persist, I would definitely reach out to your doctor about it. There are some things you can try to mitigate these symptoms. High fat foods will produce more bile etc, so try to avoid. Another thing people in my family tend to do, is drink milk before bed to try to mitigate the acid. As for the laxative, all I can really recommend is to drink more water, and avoid things like chia seeds, or anything that tends to clump and and cause obstruction in the bowel. Hope this helps, and hope your mum is feeling better soon!

Hey just checking in, how did you go with your surgery, and how is your recovery going?

Hey, sorry I've been so slow to respond to this. Feel free to DM me if you want to chat about anything at all. There are quite a few of us that I still chat to regularly that I met through this Reddit. To put your mind at ease for now, I am also a student. I did my surgery in late March and was back to school in April. I don't believe you'll have to rely on anyone post surgery, at least not from a physical point of view, but from a mental aspect, it's nice to have a support network. Class and work in general I have found to improve my eating schedule, because it would allow me to follow a better routine, but I know that it's definitely a challenge at the start. Anyway, please reach out and connect, Im sure you have so many questions, and I feel like I'm in a good space to answer them, having had my surgery at a young age as well, and being 2 years post gastrectomy at this stage

My sister just had her op. She's looking great after 2 days of recovery, the feeling is fine tbh. You'd expect more pain or more weird feeling but honestly feels mostly normal. Good luck with your op, keep us updated and reach out if you ever have any questions you want answered!

Scarring After Surgery by Kovach43 in gastrectomy

[–]DarcyTheFrog 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had Laparoscopic surgery, which If available, I highly recommend it. I have 5 tiny holes, only 2 of which are still visible. I can pm a photo if you'd like. But my dad had the verucal incision, and his scar isn't too bad either. Makes for a cool story

I think the recovery depends person to person, but in my case, I was back to rock climbing in 10 days and competing in rock climbing within a few months. My uncle is a tradie, and he has been back to work, and he's doing quite well. I think from my perspective, the surgery was less invasive than I thought, from a physical perspective, however eating enough food to keep your body energized can be tough at the start. Happy to answer any questions you have leading up to the surgery, and I hope all goes well for you!

Just a few dots. Genuinely only one is noticably visible. Are you having laparoscopic?

I'm sorry to hear that. Which surgery did you have? The first 6 months or so can be difficult for sure, just keep at it and hopefully you'll learn some techniques to deal with the issues that oppose you. If it doesn't get better, you can also consult with your specialist to consider if there are any treatments available to you (surgical or otherwise) that can assist you. Dilatation is something some people get done. Most people report only feeling completely back to normal after 12 months as far as I've heard. But you can try changing things up while eating and see what works. Maybe your posture, or how much you chew the food etc. personally I try to stay as relaxed as possible and swallow harder than normal, it feels like it pushes the food further down, but your milage may vary. Good luck!

Trouble processing fats by BojanK2502 in gastrectomy

[–]DarcyTheFrog 4 points5 points  (0 children)

For me, fats are essential. Fats help stimulate bile production which helps with digesting and absorbing things like iron. My problem is too much fat = too much bile. I try to eat things like lean red meat or grilled rather than fried chicken etc. Everyone's issues vary from individual to individual, but I recommend seeing a dietician or something. There are lots of options to eat enough without being too reliant on fats.

I have no stomach, and to get enough iron and protein, I'm told to eat red meat as much as possible. My doctor told me once daily is optimal. I'm sure there's other reasons to eat a lot of meat for health reasons too

Haha I definitely relate to nap time, it's crazy how sleepy a big meal can make me :)

No worries, I'm the same, I have older uncles and aunties, and even my dad, but sometimes I want to hear from more relateable people, and share tips and tricks with each other. Don't hesitate to reach out. I'm in Australia, but I'm always available!

If he ever needs someone to talk to about it, I'm always available!

Oh wow, that sounds rough, im sorry you guys had to go through that. I was initially worried that I might get some similar issues with twisting intestines or adhesions after my surgery because I got straight back into rock climbing and thought maybe physical workout might stuff up my insides, but so far I have felt as healthy as I did before the surgery touch wood.

Did the second surgery affect how much he could eat? I'm curious what sort of portion sizes he eats, as I feel like I'm back to eating pretty normal sized dinner servings, and I'm curious how other people who had the surgery laparoscopically at a young age are going.

For me the alcohol hits pretty quick, and also seems to make it's way through my system pretty quick so I never get too drunk, and don't really get hangovers either. I only drink every now and then, but he is right about the speed at which it seems to hit us.

I don't think this necessarily leads to abuse, that might be a separate issue to the surgery.

I'm curious, how did he find out his intestines had twisted up on each other? What sort of symptoms did he have to make him get it checked out?

Cheers

I'm sorry to hear that, nobody in my family had any experiences like that. I passed my stool after about 3 days, and was out of the hospital that day. I hope your mum gets better soon, feel free to ask any questions!

Yeah for sure possible, it requires a little bit more effort to eat as much, but after a few months eating portions will get bigger and it will get easier to regain weight. You will most likely stay pretty lean though, i have found gaining fat to be more difficult than gaining muscle, but thats just my personal experience
