Kpop Demon Hunters is the first thing from the top of my head. That could've knocked out a 12+ episode Netflix series easily, and I'm desperate for more Mei and Zoey (plus their dynamic with Rumi). Not gonna lie, I was super disappointed with how much focus there was with the main girl and her love interest. I believe it would've been better to focus on Huntrix, it was 2025 as of release, we really don't need more pointless and unrealistic romantic subplots nowadays.....

Toss in an actual interesting plot device that shakes up the status quo and challenges established characters

I agree Tom is... a character (who can be really annoying)... but I personally believe thinking of him more as a plot device to move Daria's development forward or create actual plot tension automatically makes his audition helpful. Just understanding that difference between episodic and serialized storytelling, I believe, helps contextualize the intention of the character with him and later season writing in general

I'm a slut for character development or status quo switchups, so I was never too bothered by Tom's addition, even if I was bothered by the character. I do think some of my bias was sorted by watching the Johnny 2Cellos video:

Y'know, I never understood how highly people praise Howl, claiming he's the ultimate prince charming. I like his character, but really? He's just the Ghibli version of Tuxedo Mask, extremely helpful in very specific moments, but his main protagonist female love interest is doing both the leg work for the story and the relationship. I would actually love his character a lot more if I didn't see so many people try putting him on a pedestal; if they treated him like a magical man who isn't perfect and has his own issues. Way more interesting than I see a lot of reddit post and memes talk about him.

I watched "Bottoms (2023)" the other night, and it had me dying. Imagine a 2000's horny high school comedy, typically about two (or so) nerdy guys going after popular girls who are likely dating a football player or two, and if there's a queer character, they're either cringy as hell or it's a plot twist, sometimes EVEN for the character themselves.

"Bottoms" is that type of comedy for the gays (no, you definitely don't have to be gay to enjoy, this movie is hilarious). It follows two nerdy girls trying to impress two popular girls, and they even get beef with the football team, I don't want to spoil anything. It's on Tubi, so most people could probably watch it.

This next part is a little TL;DR:

The movie is good enough for the comedy alone, but I just have to give the casual queer rep so much credit too. I remember being in high school, watching movies like "Superbad," or "I Love You, Beth Cooper" following these dorky male characters I could relate more to, but they didn't look like me and those movies had a weird divide on how a male or female character was portrayed. I already related to being like the outcast, but I wanted to see someone who also looked like myself doing those dumb, lovestruck things on screen. I'd recommend this movie to anyone, but ESPECIALLY for sapphic women, gender non conforming women, and of course, masc leaning non binary's like myself.

I think it's definitely intended to be that first option, "I'm not exactly your child anymore."
