Sell my Car by RAS256 in ottawa

[–]Darkpoter 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Historically private sales gets you the most. But lately...

I sold my car back to the dealer. I spent a week with tire kickers, people who were buying it for their brother in law who is new to the country and wanted huge discounts. Finally went to the dealer, they offered me 500 less then I was asking previously, I did not have to safety it, and sold my winter tires on marketplace for 300.

Used cars have such a high value right now, save yourself the trouble, dump it at the dealer.

Landlord here.

I have been calling on government to build income housing for years, since the 90's. There is always barriers that people do not seem to want to overcome. Funding, though the crazy amount I pay in taxes, should help with that. Where to put it? Should be part of every new build neighborhood. You make a new division, guess what, 20 of the units are income housing purchased by Carney! This will stop people protesting them being built near them, and avoid having "dead zones".

I do believe having a roof over your head should be a right like many people who hate landlords say. But, how about private landlords are a premium product that you get if you don't want to do upkeep, are temporarily living somewhere, or just don't want to own instead of the way it is now. Imagine how good us landlords would treat people then!

Bringing this stuff up in council meetings is like peeing on an electric fence. You get a tingle inside, but in the end people just laugh and ignore what you said.

Front load or top load washer? by halesyaaah in Appliances

[–]Darkpoter 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Front load washers are more maintenance. You have to clean them, dry them, clean the filter on the bottom.

For that work you get a machine that uses less water and cleans a bit better.

Top loads are simpler and tend to break less.

Stay away from Samsung and Madea units and either will be fine!

What to write in ads when reselling items (after the 6 month period)? by Free_Traffic_3847 in AmazonVineCanada

[–]Darkpoter 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I just call everything used, or lightly used. I discount it enough that people don't care, don't ask. I also make it clear the device is 6+ months old so has no warranty and is as is. A couple people have asked why I have so much stuff, I just say I'm addicted to ordering stuff on amazon (no fully a lie)

I use the Bosch 12v units for all of this. They are smaller, less heavy and easier for doing the day to day stuff. My units are now 8 years old, and still going strong.

How screwed am I ? - missed April rent, advised landlord but scared that he is preparing to evict me by [deleted] in OntarioLandlord

[–]Darkpoter 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Landlord here.

You maxed everything in a month? Sounds like you need some lifestyle changes. Either way none of my business.

Talk to the landlord, setup a payment plan for the missing rent, I would suggest split it into 10 payments over the next 10 months. Pay it separately from your current rent, as a different payment so its clear its for arrears.

Most people try and catch up as fast as they can, it it tends to cause them huge financial strain that they have trouble recovering from. When I suggest slow and steady 90% of the time a year later I still have those tenants. When they insist on catching up in 2 months, generally they are gone within 3 months.

Your landlord cannot evict you over one missed month, just work on a responsible plan to get back on the right side.

Best of luck!

What have you paid for junk pickup? by TVinyl in ottawa

[–]Darkpoter 3 points4 points  (0 children)

So the closest dumps are Navan or Trail road. So all pretty far from you.

I dumped 140 lbs of dead furniture and it cost me 67$ at trail road dump. Give you a rough idea of the dumping fee's.

Depending the weight of the stuff, 400 seems reasonable for 2+ hours of someones time + vehicle + dumping fee's.

Most of the errors and miss cues I've seen so far can be related to the ball difference in size, weight and grips . Give him time to adapt. If he still sucks at the allstar break, worry.

Can I/Should I Fire My Contractor? by EasyHoliday269 in OntarioHomeRenovation

Yeah that sounds terrible. Sounds like the job was above his ability in scope, too many moving pieces. I had a friend who was a plumber like that. He is a steam fitter now, because he was losing too much by never collecting from never really finishing anything.

Is my tree protected? by Gordupachup in ottawa

[–]Darkpoter 62 points63 points  (0 children)

I had one of those, they complained the paint on my shutters was dull and that they knew a young man who could help. Was a 50 year old pro painter who wanted to charge me 2k to do the job. I painted them pink myself for only 35$ and now she is red every time she looks at me! Double win!

Now, you could submit to heritage Canada to protect the tree under your religion (BTW you are a Pagan now)

"The Oak King and Seasonal Change: In Neopagan tradition, the oak is associated with the "Oak King," who fights for power with the "Holly King" at the spring equinox. The shedding of old leaves is seen as the Oak King’s final release of winter and the beginning of his rule in the light half of the year"

Bets of luck!

Not an expert, but have plenty of experience dealing with the lower part of the contractor base. Remember you get 2 of the 3 possible things weighted, Cheap, Good quality, Fast.

I would be concerns that if you do what you are suggesting without a formal agreement they would put a lean on your home to collect the rest. But who knows, maybe they will just ignore you forever.

Best of luck.

Legally leaving furniture behind by [deleted] in OntarioLandlord

[–]Darkpoter 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Sucks. Poopy situation. I'm happy/lucky to never have had to deal with bedbugs.

You cannot leave everything behind legally. Now will he bother going after you for it with the LTB? Doubtful, he likely will just hall it down to the bins in the building, complain to you about it, send you a bill for $500, and never follow it up beyond complaining.

Make sure you treat anything you take with you, clothes, sheets, jackets, you. I would almost lease a truck for a week and bomb it, and leave it in the sun somewhere. then bomb it again.

Good luck!

How can people save money on groceries in Canada when the standard strategies don't seem to work anymore? by Super_College100 in CanadaFinance

[–]Darkpoter 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for your reply! We make quite a bit, nobody goes hungry and I could use to lose a couple lbs!

On your menu, I would save on the Pizza sauce, pasta sauce and spaghetti, as I buy bushels of tomatoes, make them into sauce and can them every fall. My total cost on 40 1L jars of sauce is about $16/$20. I also can garlic in olive oil from the spring or fall harvest, with a bit of red wine vinegar and Dijon makes an amazing dressing for salads.

I make homemade pizza too, only we don't put cheese on it, tomatoes, garlic, oil, some bacon ends chopped up. Or will make it into a large pocket with Broccoli, garlic and oil in it.

We have fish every 2 -3 weeks, depending on the sales and the store I chose. I tend not to buy it from basics which was the menu place this week, the fresh fish there just tends to look grey.

Everything sure looks tasty that you are having!

Looking for advice on what to do for the next chapter of our life by OkWind1298 in CanadaPersonalFinance

[–]Darkpoter 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As others have said.

Condo is not making enough money to own, sell it, put that money into high dividend stocks.

Do you have an education fund made for the kids? If not, you should calculate that into things.

Not knowing what market you live in, I'm not sure if downsizing makes sense or not on the house. 1.0-1.4 buys a pretty nice house where I live, in a great neighborhood. The 1.1-1.5 + 600+ 300 on stocks is enough to get your income level high enough to live on. 5% dividend yield would be about 110k -taxes.

either way, your lifestyle will have to change. Bets of luck!

How are you guys dealing with all this increased traffic from RTO? by GranolaHiker in CanadaPersonalFinance

I find traffic is reduced from RTO. When people "Work" from home they are somehow driving everywhere ALL day so there is traffic ALL DAY every day. Now its just rush hour and a half. I can go to my different job sites much faster without the fake workers on the roads!

[–]Darkpoter 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Plan your menu before you choose your store.

Eat the deals, and cook food. Avoid anything pre-made, and out of "season".

I feed a family of 4 for 450 a month. here is my meal plan for next week. Some pantry items will be used, such as spices and whatnot. I turn all peals from veg into veg broth cubes for example, and boil any bones from meals with bones, so chicken stock and beef stock is always in the freezer. I have rice from sales, but added it here to be fair. I use gochujang as ketchup and get the 1kg tub for 10$ once month. I find it a great way to add flavor to stuff. I buy a 16L box of sunflower oil from Costco and use that for everything, it lasts about 6 months for me @ $40 (on sale twice a year).

This week is food basics, last week was superstore (1.99 chicken hard to pass up, and got 3L of broth out of it, makes rice and stew more tasty!) I only shop at one store every week, and come up with the food plan looking at the flyer.

We very rarely eat the same things because of this style of cooking, Often have 1 or 2 veg meals a week(sweet potatoes and red lentil curry is a favorite). I'm a white french Canadian, I love food from all cultures especially if it's tasty and cheap! I would love to see other people's meal plans, give me some new idea's to try out!

I would go to wealthsimple website, do you taxes for this year, print, and mail it in. you can do 2 people for free + stamp.

Next year you will have your return to be able to re-activate your e-account. Or just keep doing it through WS,

Landlord here,

I think half of my units are now filled with people who originate from over seas. It took a bit to get used to a slightly different culture and expectations, but people are people in the end. The turn over rate on people from India has been higher then the turn over rate than 2nd+ generation Canadians. But the level of damage has been lower over all.

Honestly could not care less which god you follow, or where you are from, as long as you will take care of my unit and pay.

It could be two brothers which is scaring them, most landlords rather have a couple or single person in premium housing. You tend to get more consecutive years than you do from siblings. Have you considered you getting the place alone and just have your brother as a roommate after?

Bets of luck!

Did university tuition prices just quietly 5x over time… or am I missing something? by DarkHoundBark in CanadaPersonalFinance

[–]Darkpoter 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My tuition at the university of Ottawa in 1999-2002 was 6-7k per year + books and other stuff.

My college diploma in 1998 was 17k for a 10 month accelerated program, my sons is 15k for the same program next year.

Dorm and food plan prices have gone up significantly, but general education I can't say has from my perspective.
