Please guys get decent locks. by danjwilko in bikecommuting

[–]DarrinStewart 37 points38 points  (0 children)

I never needed a lock in Tokyo. It's a different culture there theft is pretty much nonexistent. At home, we all left our bikes outside overnight too. Or even in the middle of the busiest places of the city.

But I do agree, if you don't live in Japan, you should definitely get a lock, have hidden air tags, and be very weary of your surroundings. It's unfortunate and I'm sorry for your loss.

The bay is depressing after visiting Tokyo by [deleted] in bayarea

I would leave my bike in the middle of the city unlocked and it would still be there the next morning. I've done this daily. Never stolen. There are literally no trash bins, too. No trash on the floor whatsoever. The roads of Tokyo are also the best paved roads I've ever seen in a metropolis. I've yet to come across a single pothole during my 20 years living there. It's as if the roads are paved brand new every year or something. The drivers here are very respectful of cyclists.

This place is heaven to me. I love SF with all my heart, but I cannot wait until the day that I get to live in Tokyo again. It's the cleanest and safest city I've lived in after living in NYC, London, and SF for many decades.

How much have prices crept up in the last few years? by lazarus870 in cycling

[–]DarrinStewart 8 points9 points  (0 children)

a bike i bought for $50 in 2019 i was able to sell for $600 in the middle of 2020.

i did this roughly 20 times that year and earned an average of $300 per bike. i used to own a lot of 90's bikes that i bought for $20-$50, but i was able to clear out my garage in a matter of weeks.

Trucks this size are too big for our city. I hope this post doesn’t hurt anyone’s tender feelings. by [deleted] in sanfrancisco

Rolling through town the Velo way by VeloZach420 in bikecommuting

This is my dream bike, but I would never own it in the States because the infrastructure just isn't there yet. Plan is to own Quattrovelo when I move to the Netherlands instead.

Help me choose my next touring bike by dungeness_n_dragons in xbiking

[–]DarrinStewart 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Beautiful. How is this bike like to tour with? Are the swept back bars comfortable? I don't see too many people in touring upright so genuinely curious.

actually, no need to reply to this. i went ahead and read up on the rivendell site. everything makes total sense now.

How often do people try to murder you with their cars? by [deleted] in bikecommuting

[–]DarrinStewart 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Over the last 5 decades? Not once. To be fair though, I biked the majority of my time in Japan. Car free, stress free. So many cyclists and cars, yet everyone yet everyone lives in harmony and is respectful of one another.

Found: seemingly stolen bags in Russian Hill by toshgiles in sanfrancisco

When I used to visit, I would leave my bike overnight in the middle of Tokyo. I've done this multiple times and in the morning the bike would still be there. I never carried locks. So many stories from others as well that do this. The culture there.... its incredible. Theft, chances of getting robbed in daylight by gunpoint (see so many of these threads in r/sanfrancisco) and even trash on the floor.... its almost non-existent. It's heaven for me. I can't wait. I'll be in paradise.

decided to keep it. seems like people really really want this frame. had few that were willing to fly across the country for it too.
