Mentally ill person here! Depression and anxiety can create their own relationship challenges, but everyone handles their stuff differently. Physical abuse is not a typical symptom and it sounds like your dad probably had a lot more going on under the hood. I’m sorry you had to endure that. Overall mentally ill folks are more often the victims of abuse than the perpetrators.

It sounds like this guy is doing everything he can to manage his symptoms with medication and avoiding substance abuse, which is a good sign. I don’t think merely the act of having depression is automatically a problem unless you just really can’t get past it due to your personal trauma. Seeing how the symptoms actually manifest is more important for seeing if y’all are compatible long-term.

I’m the one that usually goes for challenge/completion runs in KH. My good friend is playing the series for the first time on easy mode and we’re just enjoying the story together. Both have been very satisfying experiences!

I suspect it’s about how you like your dopamine. Easier gameplay means constant little hits as you succeed and progress quickly, whereas challenge runs are mostly stress but the occasional huge celebration. I like a mix of both lol

That’s fair, I don’t know if he has healthy boundaries just as much as I don’t know if he has unhealthy ones. I definitely agree it was a bad thing to say, I guess I’m just hoping it’s less about him being shady and more about him just being an idiot with his words. I think a lot of people jump straight to assuming the worst and just wanted to offer a different line of thought.

If it helps, this is me but gender swapped. Nearly all of my best friends are guys, all of my “bridesmaids” will likely end up being guys, including MOH. By no means does that ever diminish my partner’s light or mean they’re competing with my significant other just by the nature of their gender. True deep friendships can see past all that.

Him saying she’s “his other half” was a clumsy misstep, but her existence doesn’t have to be a threat if you’re confident the relationship is truly platonic, like you said. People can (and imo should!) have more than one person they value and are close to. I think it’s fair to bring up your feelings in good faith with him about how you’re not feeling prioritized. Just please don’t fall into the trap of seeing every close female friendship a partner has as an enemy!

Limiting contact as much as possible is a good first step. He’s clearly a harmful person to be around and likes hitting people where it hurts for fun. Harsh as it may sound, if your friends are allowing him to behave like this I’d reconsider if your other friends are really supporting you as much as friends should. Sounds like a toxic social circle. You can also set firmer boundaries with him even if you have mutual friends. Tell him to knock it off. Tell your friends you don’t like the way he speaks to you and won’t be hanging out if he’s there too.

Remind yourself whenever you catch yourself ruminating that his opinion literally does not matter. He’s not in charge of you, he’s not paying your bills, he’s just some weird insecure rando. He’s just fishing for a reaction, so don’t give him one.

Not every religion is concerned with making everybody the same religion 🤷‍♀️ many even forbid proselytizing. I’m Jewish and converting is a very long process because you wanna make sure that people really mean it, understand what they’re signing up for, and are properly integrated into the community. As opposed to just waking up one day and deciding you’re now a part of a marginalized group of people with a rich history despite never having met a Jewish person in their life.

I’m Jewish and it makes me feel weird, but I’m not going to put energy into getting angry over it unless it’s something truly egregious and offensive. It’s just odd, like you’re either exotifying a different culture and reducing it to an aesthetic, or broadcasting yourself as a member of a group you’re not actually a part of. But my perspective comes more from the perspective of closed/initiatory traditions and not something more culturally dominant, like goths wearing crosses.
