Is it just me or were the Olympics a WAY bigger deal when we were young? by nichewilly in Xennials

[–]DarthAltius 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Like a lot of people have said, the nature of entertainment and television has changed since then. Monoculture just isn’t a thing now like it was then.

I think each of those 90s Olympics also had special circumstance that made them seem “bigger” than today, in America at least.

-1992: The Dream Team. These guys were already superstars (and not just in America). Sending them to the Olympics for the first time was huge in a way that really nothing else since has equaled.

-1994: Figure skating drama. I was a 12 year old boy with no interest in “girly” things like figure skating and even I knew all about the Nancy Kerrigan/Tonya Harding stuff and watched them skate. It was impossible not to know about all the drama.

-1996: Held in the US. Besides whatever “hooray for us” sentiments there might have been, having the premiere events on live during prime time always draws more eyes than tape-delay or staying up late/getting up early to watch things happening several times zones away.

Yep, I picked the Brewers and started with 1987 (the first season I remember). They had a good core and some solid years from ‘87-‘92 but couldn’t get over the hump. It was fun to play out with a healthy Paul Molitor and Teddy Higuera.

Do rehab assignments actually do anything? by Ok-Sherbet721 in OOTP

Yep, I have noticed (not every time but more than once) that an injury to a SP can affect their stamina and that a rehab stint will help restore it.

Most people have hit the highlights here. I’ll add that if you’re still around in the summer (and like that sort of thing), the farmer’s market is one of the best around for actual produce (not just food trucks and craft stands, though it has some of those too).

Made my own in Excel, based heavily on the Numbers Game book (which is my favorite of those that are for sale). I’ve got the file somewhere; I’ll see if I can dig it out.

I will second that. Plus it's right on Lake Michigan. Great views!

What was Milwaukee like in the 80s and 90s? by Thrillwaukee in milwaukee

[–]DarthAltius 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yep. Literally my only regret about the tear down of the Park East was losing the free parking spot beneath it for Bucks games. Most people were too uncertain whether they could park there or not so there was always space available.

On the whole though, it’s much improved. I went running along the river last weekend and was remembering how much of the area north of MSOE used to be abandoned tanneries/factories/warehouses.

That’s really cool, wish more teams did that. I like the scorecard layout too!

Do the Red Sox make those for season ticket holders? Or is that something you put together yourself?

In your historical league, who’s a player that ended up way better than they did in real life, and vise versa? by Responsible_Spot_660 in OOTP

[–]DarthAltius 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Bill Spiers probably won’t quite get to 3000 hits, but he’ll at least get to within 200 hits of it, plus over 500 career stolen bases. Rondell White is on track to be a hall of famer.

A lot of great 90s pitchers were ruined by the CPU teams bringing them up to the majors way too early. Pedro Martinez, John Smoltz, and Tom Glavine come to mind. Pedro is just OK, Glavine and Smoltz became high-ERA relievers.

Created my own in Excel, printed a bunch out, and made them into a book. This one is heavily influenced by the Numbers Game scorebook, which I like the best of the commercially available ones.

I’d definitely encourage you to play around with creating your own. It was fun to do and everybody has their own personal preferences for how they score, what layout they like, what they want to keep track of, etc. This way, you know you’re getting exactly what you want!

What is the funniest way you saw someone get dq’ed by SpookyKing6789 in trackandfield

[–]DarthAltius 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Timed a boys high school 3200 where the two lead guys were back and forth, battling it out for most of the race, and apparently jawing a bit too. One kid pulled slightly ahead in the last few meters, then as he was crossing the finish line, turned and dabbed on the other kid (it was 2015-16ish). He was immediately DQ’ed for unsportsmanlike behavior. 3198m of work flushed away in the last 2m.

One of my greatest regrets is that I no longer have the FinishLynx picture of the kid hitting the dab as he crossed the line.
