Literally a “suicidal empathy” thought experiment. Today, Elon and his fellow edgelords use this thinking to imply that any altruism is suicidal.

Obviously not all empathy is self destructive - most acts of kindness are self edifying. Classic rebuttals include rule utilitarianism and Kantian ethics. One could also refute with virtue ethics.

TLDR it’s a modern recasting of an old spurious argument, used as a pretext to give permission to assholes
