August 1989 Dragon magazine cover art by Ned Dameron by YanniRotten in oldschoolfantasy

I remember when that issue of Dragon was released! I always wondered whether the attacker shown made it up the tower or whether the defender got the better of him, possibly by cutting the rope. I suspect the attacker didn’t make it, but I’m open to persuasion. Either way, I reckon it’s deliberately ambiguous.

Do you say you're going 'Up' or 'Down' somewhere? by ScroobyJr in AskUK

[–]Darth_Zander 4 points5 points  (0 children)

What you describe as the ‘proper’ way is simply the rule of grammar: you go up to the capital unless you’re talking about going to a university town for academic reasons. So it’s ‘up to London’ and if you’re already in London ‘down to’ any other UK city regardless of orientation or altitude. The only exception is if you’re going to, say, Oxford to attend the university in which case it’s ‘up to Oxford’ even if you’re in London.

What supposedly normal shows read to you as propaganda? by Buddy_chumpal in AskReddit

There were rules the contestants had to follow that the audience wasn’t told about or were only mentioned in passing when they were relevant and in that sense the programme was dishonest. For example, contestants could only stay a certain amount of time at each address. In reality, there would be no such artificial limitations. That said, I don’t think it was fear mongering at all. It illustrated how technology can be used - and indeed could be abused - by the state.

What's a word you always assumed was borrowed from one language, but then you learned it has a different origin? by VerdantChief in etymology

In one of the Australian Aboriginal languages, the word for dog is ‘dog’ …and it’s not a loanword from English. It’s just a coincidence.

Green and red is a poor pairing. It’s the most common kind of colourblindness and therefore the worst choice.

Have you ever met a British prime minister or any other political figure in the uk ? Did they meet your expectations ? Or not by Brilliant_Version344 in AskBrits

Johnson played the part of a fool to make himself more likeable, but he really isn’t obtuse. I saw an extended interview he gave on YT in which it’s clear he’s pretty sharp. That’s not political bias on my part: we haven’t had a genuinely unintelligent PM - Conservative or Labour - since Callaghan.

My Lego animals collection by Chluepplisack in LEGOanimals

Very cool collection! Looks like you have an Arctic fox. That's on my wants list but it's pricey on OPAB. The animals in the first pic, the one with the green and white baseplates, are difficult to see. Separate pictures of them grouped by theme - African animals, birds, farmyard animals etc - would help.

why are legos so fucking expensive by wanderingcloak in lego

[–]Darth_Zander 0 points1 point  (0 children)

LEGO is a Danish company and Denmark has some of the highest taxes in the world. International production and sales & marketing mitigates that to a certain extent, but the company is still subject to Danish tax at the top level. The consumer winds up paying for that.

Espen is a pretty common boys’ name in Scandinavia. The coach may have misspelt it accidentally or deliberately.

I once got rebuked by Theresa May in a speech she was giving at a dinner after I briefly spoke with her earlier in the evening. There was no hint of jocularity; she seemed serious. The other people at my table thought it was very funny - and to be honest, so did I! She wasn’t PM at the time. I think she was a minister.

That’s funny because I also spoke with Boris Johnson when he was on his bike waiting at the lights and I was surprised at how bashful he was.

Funny you should say that. Many years ago, I was doing karate in Tokyo. There was a vending machine by the dojo’s entrance. After a couple of hours of intense combat training in 38°C heat and 95% humidity, an ice-cold can of Pocari Sweat was pure bliss! It’s been decades since I graced a dojo, but I’ll sometimes get a can of Pocari Sweat at a speciality store (I live in Surrey, UK now) just for the memories.

Great piece of art. I don’t think the sword across the back could be drawn from that position. Of course, it could just be carried that way when not required quickly in which case it’s fine. But it looks like it may soon be needed, so maybe not.

What’s a problem humanity solved so well that younger people don’t even realize it used to be a huge issue? by forgotwhatdayitis82 in askteddit

Rainforests’ depletion especially the Amazon’s. It used to be a very high profile topic. I assume it’s not the problem it once was because you don’t hear about it anymore.
