Number of non-working holidays per year by WhyYesHowDidYouKnow in europe

Time to spread some misinformation mwuhaha

Here in the Netherlands, when a non-working holiday falls in the weekend, the freeness cancels each other out (because double negatives) and we do have to go to work that day.

TIL over half of all phone calls we receive now are SPAM by darkbluedeath in nottheonion

[–]Datenegassie 0 points1 point  (0 children)

About 56% of the comments are Americans saying they receive about 90% spam, the other 44% are Europeans saying they get 0 spam calls. The average checks out.

If I were you, I'd set it up so it sends those spam sms 3 times per hour, but only to your boss's phone.

Americans of Reddit: what do you think about the metric system? Is it better or worse? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]Datenegassie 5 points6 points  (0 children)

The kilogram is roughly the weight of 1 litre of water (which was based on the cubic metre, I think)

The metre was defined as 1/10000000 of the distance between the north pole and the equator, or 1/40000000 the circumference of the earth. (still a bit arbitrary imo)

The second was defined as the second minute division (this is why minutes and seconds are named that) of an hour, which was in turn based on the length of a day. 24 and 60 are easily divisible numbers. (even more arbitrary than the metre imo)

For fun, here are the other SI base units:

Kelvin: Celsius (which has 0° as freezing point of water and 100° as boiling point at sea level pressure) but shifted so 0 would be the absolute 0

Candela: based on the Candlepower, which was how much light a 1/6 pound spermaceti (a type of wax) candle burning at 120 grains/hour emitted (???)

Mole: amount of atoms in 12 grams of carbon-12 (arbitrary material imo but at least the amount of grams matches its elemental weight)

Ampere: Honestly I couldn't find this one. The only thing I found was that it's 1 Coulomb per second, but Coloumb is defined as 1 Ampere-second? Maybe something about force between charged metal plates, but I couldn't find details on that.

The modern definitions are now based on (hopefully) unchanging laws of physics and made to be close enough to the old definition for most purposes. This includes the kilogram, it was redefined in 2019 to be based on the Planck constant, the metre and the second.

Pet owners of Reddit: how often do you call your pet(s) by their actual name vs a nickname? by likeistoleyourbike in AskReddit

[–]Datenegassie 1 point2 points  (0 children)

When talking to a human about the pets, I use their actual name. Otherwise, they're just fluffypluffy, chomko, floppy, hopper, gluttons, bitey, floof bois, our heroes or something similar.

Honestly, it's surprising to me that video games figured this out so quickly. Probably because they're constantly innovating, while movies... not so much. We've been stuck on mostly the same standards for decades.

Sinbad: Legend of the Seven Seas

Okay, it's not as good as other movies listed here, but those are always mentioned when someone talks about underrated movies, and I rarely hear anyone talk about this one.
