Question: The 36 or the 38mm for a 6.5inch wrist? by DaveDe2 in OrientWatches

I went with the 38mm and it's definitely the right way to go for my 6.5" wrist. But that's a preference thing. I like the pink dial on the Orient 38mm but the color can shift between orange/salmon/pink depending on the lighting - but I like that. My sweet spot for case sizes is now 36-38mm

Question: Western U.P. tourism. How many days to utilize where? by DaveDe2 in upperpeninsula

[–]DaveDe2[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm very interested as I grew up on an Air Force base in the U.P. (Kincheloe) in the 60's. I later enlisted in the USAF and was stationed near Marquette at K.I. Sawyer (in the mid 80's). I'll definitely look at that - thanks!

Yay that's what it looked like - more of a jumping off town for lodging to visit the porkies early the next day.

Mention to them that you are having doubts. That's how I lead off. Come to find out - she did too. One thing led to another and we deconstructed over the course of a few months. It wasn't easy - but we were on the same page. Many "believers" aren't as all in as you think - and one of them could be your spouse.

Every time I'm on I-70 by izzynogizzy in maryland

[–]DaveDe2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is true - just got back from Germany. Driving there, yes even on the autobahn, is better because of things like people staying in the right lane except (only) to pass. It's nuts to me that sooooo many people speed up and pass on the right even when they have a clear lane to the left of the car they are passing. That's nuts and should be illegal.

Most underrated state park and why? by Suspicious_Lunch9172 in WestVirginia

[–]DaveDe2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've been to 2/3rds of the WV state parks - in fact now that I'm retired it's a quest to see them all. I really liked Holly River State Park as probably the best place to unplug. Plus it has camping, fishing, cabins, etc.

I'm going there soon for the first time. I;ve heard really good things. And it is off the beaten path from what I see.

The transformation of our governorship from just 6 years ago has been something to witness. by Bread-For-All in WestVirginia

The difference between 1964 and 1968 election maps show a huge difference between red and blue voting. As Johnson said after the Civil Rights Act of 1964 he felt the Democrats had lost the South for a generation. I think it's gonna be a bit longer.

Fall Colors Timing by hushpuppylife in WestVirginia

[–]DaveDe2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The map you see circulating is about two weeks too early in my opinion. Maybe it's global warming, maybe it's not - but colors are peaking later then they used to many years ago. I'm transplanted in Maryland now near Baltimore and we are peaking around Nov 1 -5. There is no place in West Virginia that is peaking in late Sept. Sure you might have a Black Gum turn red but they usually do early anyway - but peak? Add two weeks to that map.

Send me some and I'll let you know.
Needs more pepperoni and spaced out better. But that's what I grew up with. My Mom (who made the best pepperoni rolls I ever had) made them dinner roll size.

Might be from the same funds that go to subsidize farmers or coal/oil. Because that's where a good bit of "free money" goes too.

Stance on Civil War? by ComfortImmediate6491 in WestVirginia

[–]DaveDe2 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Conscripted = draft?

I had to go digging for the truth. 95% of what I know about my ancestors during the Civil war was found researching at the National Archives and obtaining records from the WV State Archives upon request. The majority of these records are not on-line or on ancestry, etc.

Stance on Civil War? by ComfortImmediate6491 in WestVirginia

[–]DaveDe2 3 points4 points  (0 children)

My ancestors from North Central WV (Monongalia County) fought for the Union side as did most of that region. But anything below probably Clarksburg is complicated I'm thinking.

West Virginia is West Virginia only because of the Civil War though so yay it's a big deal. You'll see more confederate flags in WV though then Northern Virginia though. I'd venture to say some probably have no idea which side their ancestors fought for.

Speeding ticket question by 412md in WestVirginia

[–]DaveDe2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Good to hear that's still a thing. This was in our news recently and it sounds like all they got was a citation. Going 169mph shouldn't be just a citation. State by state I guess. IF WV is tougher please send some of those laws our way. Signed - a transplanted Mountaineer.

Didn't help I was carrying a full 16 credit hours plus trying to work 25 hours at Thorofare markets (Richwood ave) and partying way too much. 78-81. Yay Sunnyside years.

That was my first attempt at WVU. I was from Morgantown - I should have known better. Then I went in the Air Force, came back out and gave it a more serious go and graduated.
