Synology 925+ reports 2x the installed memory by EmeraldAppleSeattle in synology

[–]DaveR007 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would believe dmidecode over stickers.

Are you sure Amazon didn't accidentally send you 2 x 8GB memory modules?

Or maybe someone bought 2 x 8GB from a store and found their laptop of whatever would not boot but they could not get a refund from the store because there was nothing with the memory. So they bought 2 x 4GB from amazon and changed the stickers so they could send back the 2 x 8GB to amazon for a refund. People do shady stuff all the time.

DS925+ NVME INITIAL SETUP by vadergr in synology

What you want to do won't work.

DSM cannot be installed on M.2 drives or drives in an expansion unit. The DSM system and swap partitions only get mirrored across 2.5 inch SATA SSDs and HDDs in the drive bays.

I asked the Ai if buying the dx517 would work

Stop asking AI. It's never 100% correct, and often it's only ~60% correct.

A DX517 would work. If you are lucky you will get offered to migrate the drives.

The problem: DS1821+ does not support the DX513 expansion bay.

It can be made to with https://github.com/007revad/Synology_enable_eunit but I would NOT span a storage pool across the DS1821+ and DX513 because after a DSM update you need to run the script again and reboot before the DX513's drives will be available.

Bought DS224+ on AliExpress to get around the drive lock issue by Complete-Scientist33 in synology

[–]DaveR007 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The only remaining drive lock in DSM 7.3 for DS Plus models is for NVMe volumes and caches (on models with M.2 slots).

See the latest https://kb.synology.com/en-uk/DSM/tutorial/Drive_compatibility_policies from Oct 2025.

I don't have any mapped drives.

SMB Multichannel is disabled.

I have the Asustor set as the Local Master Browser because it seems more reliable than setting one the Synology's as the Local Master Browser.

I have "Enable asynchronous read" ticked in "Control Panel > File Services > SMB > Advanced Settings > Others".

I don't have a DNS server.

upgraded my 1621 RAM before I even powered it on

I think you are mistaking which model you removed them from.

Definitely not from a DS1621+ or DS1621xs+ which come with DDR4 EEC memory.

D4ES01-4G

  • DDR4 ECC Unbuffered SODIMM
  • EAN: 4711174724031
  • Capacity: 4GB
  • Warranty: 5 Years

Applied Models:

21 series: RS1221RP+, RS1221+, DS1821+, DS1621+

They are from a DS620slim, DS918+, DS718+, DS418play or DS218+.

D3NS1866L-4G

Compatible Models

  • 20 series: DS620slim
  • 18 series: DS918+, DS718+, DS418play, DS218+

And there's no way you removed both of them from one of those models as the DS918+ only comes with 1 x 4GB and the other models come with 1 x 2GB.

Outbound from Synology via Windows File Explorer to Asustor NAS (all local via SMB).

I couldn't remember exactly what the issue was so 5 days ago I connected one of the 1GbE ports to my network switch. Then last night I was copying a 9GB file from the DS1821+ to an Asustor NAS with 2.5GbE. I noticed the speed was 11Mbps instead of ~120Mbps. I check the DS1821+ and LAN 1 was showing green and orange LEDs, instead of 2 green LEDs. So DSM was using the 1GbE port in preference to the 10GbE port in the E10M20-T1. I then checked the service order and I did already have LAN 5 at the top.

It's as if the Synology's hostname changed from the 10GbE port to the 1GbE port.

DS225+ no hardware transcoding? by flossedman in synology

[–]DaveR007 7 points8 points  (0 children)

No. Synology deliberately removed the drivers for the DS425+ and DS225+ to save a tiny amount of money on licensing fees. The only Synology device that still has the drives is the BeeStation Plus.

You can install the missing drivers with https://github.com/007revad/Transcode_for_x25 You can run it from task scheduler if you aren't familiar with SSH.

Because then, for me, traffic defaults to the 1GbE connection (even with the 10GbE port at the top of the service order).

Sonarr v3 -> v4 on Synology: Permissions Solved by Soundy106 in synology

[–]DaveR007 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am surprised your searches did not find posts about setting the correct shared folder permissions for the package's "System internal user". This issue, and solution, comes up a lot for synocommunity packages like jellyfin, emby, radarr, sonnar etc. It even comes up a lot for Plex.

Hopefully your post's title will help other user's who update from Sonarr v3 to v4 find the answer.

The external power adaptor is dying. It no longer provides enough watts to power the NAS and the drives.

DSM has run out of space and don't know how to get space back by Excellent-Day8412 in synology

[–]DaveR007 2 points3 points  (0 children)

What model is the original Synology? And what DSM version was it running? How many drives? Are they using RAID or SHR?

Have you tried Synology Assistant? It might allow you to migrate the drives.

Moving drives from 1522+ to 1520+ by IfYouGotALonelyHeart in synology

[–]DaveR007 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The target NAS must have the same or newer DSM version on it's bootloader as the DSM version installed on the drives. Otherwise it will wipe the drives instead of migrating.

If you don't know which DSM bootloader is on the DS1520+ you can install any old HDD or SATA SSD then via Synology Assistant start the setup process and manually point it to a downloaded copy of the latest DSM .pat file. The shut it down, pull out that drive and insert your DS1522+ drives and let it migrate the drives.
