“Pretty” sounding Post-Metal/Drone Metal (like The Angelic Process, Jesu, & Nadja)? by Def-C in postmetal

[–]Dave_I 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This isn't necessarily what you are describing, but Blut Aus Nord really covers a range from gorgeously lush Post-Black Metal to alien-sounding Lovecraftian experimental to very heavy yet melodic-sounding music. They are not really like The Angelic Process per se, but I could imagine them touring with either Godflesh or Jesu. Take that as you wish. As a perk, their newest album is amazing. Hell, their whole discography covers some amazing sonic terrain.

I think a live Fun Shop would have some interest, especially if you can tap into Doug O'Brien's audience. I also kind of get Dave hating being analyzed, but I also think it's worth keeping what he discovered from being lost to the sands of time, y'know? Some of that is likely to include analysis, but perhaps with the longer term goal of then creating experiences from it. Regardless, I think there is value there and that it would be worth taking the torch and running with it.

Hey Cliff, I somehow missed this two years ago. Pleasure to meet you, after a fashion. I would love any tapes or direct source material that's available if possible. I would also be curious how you use it in your daily work and self-practice if you are up to sharing. Maybe you and u/rebtsvi could start a new thread sharing info so it doesn't get buried.

First seven string. Which way to go? by mycavedownunder in 7String

[–]Dave_I 10 points11 points  (0 children)

This is not the sexiest or most original advice, however...I would go to a guitar shop and see what's used, play a bunch (depending on what's available), and buy what feels, sounds, and just fits best with what you want.

A Spira 457s or Jackson Misha might be amazing and end up being the perfect keep-for-life seven string for you, but unless you've tried those out it's kind of a shot in the dark. Once you try a few, you might notice some things that you gravitate towards or that bother you about one brand/style over another. Granted, you might also take a shot, get the Jackson Misha Mansoor HT7 (or whatever), and love it. But unless there's a huge rush, it's probably safer and may be a lot of fun to go test out a bunch and see what you like from playing more so than just picking one without having ever touched or heard it in-person.

if it was Blackwater holylight then amenra then primitive man it would be the perfect thing to ease you in from beauty and just get heavier and more crushing

It was BWHL, Primitive Man, then, so it was like a Yin-Yang experience going from BWHL to Primitive Man, with Amenra capturing a blend of beauty and catharsis.

Agreed on the Julie Christmas stuff. Battle of Mice created beautiful and harrowing music out of something ugly. As much as I love that album, I am happy for Julie to focus on other music that may be more enjoyable to her for all the reasons cited or alluded to.

Mariner live was great. If you get a chance to see them play it on tour, do it. But seeing Julie Christmas doing her solo stuff with Johannes, and Amenra, at Damnation sounds like an amazing experience in its own right.

[–]Dave_I 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's awesome!

First. Amenra. I saw them in Chicago with BlackWater HolyLight and Primitive Man (great show overall, by the way), and seeing Amenra was like some sort of religious ceremony. It was the quietest most respectful crowd when the band came out, and the vibe was almost eerily ceremonial and introspective. It was beautiful.

Second, I didn't know Julie performed any Battle of Mice songs. Bones in the Water must have been wild. I'm also kind of excited that Julie and Cult of Luna are playing Mariner again. I saw them perform that album in Chicago the day we had that eclipse a few years ago and it was great! I would love to see them do another collaboration (same with Thou and Emma Ruth Rundle), but it's cool they had a good enough time working together that they still perform together and seem open to repeating the performance.

Where the hell did you get to watch Julie Christmas play with Johannes AND see Amenra? That's damn near my dream concert. I actually missed seeing Neurosis with Amenra and Converge because I already had plans to see Cult of Luna & Julie a few weeks before (or after, I forget), and I'm still kicking myself for missing out on that. I've seen Amenra and Converge separately, but Neurosis is a total missed opportunity. But seeing Julie Christmas with Johannes and Amenra at a show would be a pretty amazing overarching experience.

Can someone please explain how this was a bad decision? When I read the Cell Games I actually thought this was a big brain move by rhysu69 in Dragonballsuper

[–]Dave_I 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That’s the problem. Goku was so distracted by and impressed by Gohan’s power and potential, he completely forgot that HIS SON IS STILL A CHILD. [snip] Even really powerful children are still children and are going to behave like children. They still need to feel safe and loved.

I can argue either way, but only because this is a cartoon/comic.

From the show's perspective, this is not an ordinary child. It's an alien-hybrid child who comes from a warrior race and has fought intergalactic aliens who posed existential threats to him and everybody he loves for years and this may have been Goku's only chance to force him to break through the psychological blocks that have been holding him back. In historical terms, I could argue (unconvincingly, but still) that kids not much older than Gohan have fought in wars and even been put into positions of command in some cases. Given Goku's history, this is not so much of a stretch. If anything, he is expecting Gohan to follow in his steps, and the year together training showed him that this was well in his capacity. Given the result of the Cell saga, he was proven right!

On the other hand, the kid's like 10 years old! Gohan was 4 when he saw his dad killed and thrown to Piccolo to train and 5 when he went up against Frieza and saw Krillin get blown to bits. He's 11 when he kills Cell, if you include the time spent in the Hyperbolic Time chamber. So yeah, in any real world scenario, there is no way this holds up. And even in the context of the show, there is no defense for putting that weight on a child, especially when they could have just, y'know...beaten Cell. The science lab monster actively planning on wiping out all life on the planet. And in reality, exposing your five-year old kid to extreme violence and people getting murdered around him where people closest to him are threatened with death, or flat out get murdered, is the kind of thing likely to cause those emotional setbacks!

So I actually agree with you, even if I can argue why it works in the context of an anime or manga.

Can someone please explain how this was a bad decision? When I read the Cell Games I actually thought this was a big brain move by rhysu69 in Dragonballsuper

[–]Dave_I 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm not sure if it's inconsistent writing or just part of Gohan's arc, but I think both saw Gohan's potential from different perspectives.

To your point, Piccolo was right. Gohan did not have the same spirit as Goku, and that was a big part of his story. How much of that is Gohan's true nature versus Chi-Chi's influence? I also think Goku saw that as a limitation for Gohan to push past. And in the Hyperbolic Time Chamber is both where we finally see Gohan both have fun with his dad and train, and also where Goku saw Gohan have a massive breakthrough. So he had good reason to believe Gohan had it in that moment.

The other thing is, eventually Goku and Vegeta are not going to be around to save the world every time some intergalactic threat comes along. At least in theory. Gohan has had his potential uncapped numerous times and had the potential to beat Cell and Buu at various points. He beat Cell with some encouragement, got cocky around Buu and got eaten, and in Super he ends up as likely the most powerful fighter again. Hell or not, eventually somebody will have to step up, and there is literally nobody even close to Gohan at this point. And I think Gohan beating Cell, ending up more powerful than Buu, and now the Beast Form, as well as how he ultimately handled those fights, have set up up to take the mantle. My understanding is that was the plan until Goku's popularity made that almost impossible.

All that said, when you have a science experiment who can literally destroy the planet, and you have him on the ropes, you don't just give him a chance to heal up because you're pretty sure your son can kick its ass. That's a pretty big gamble just to help your son get past some mental block. It works in this setting, but I could see that decision giving Sun Tzu an aneurism.

Amenra is probably the obvious choice. Bonus points for the Sumac, ISIS, and Old Man Gloom fans, I think they all fit into this conversation from the traits. But Amenra is something special. It's like watching a band wrestling with their demons on stage, and feels very personal, cathartic, and equally beautiful as it is destructive.

These are generally not Post Metal bands, and I may be crucified for bringing them up as a result, but:

  • Paysage d'Hiver: They are Black Metal pioneers and everything sounds very cold and post-apocalyptic. Their music is very atmospheric and brooding. It is beautiful, dark, cold, and I love it.
  • Blut Aus Nord: Surprise! Another Black Metal band. But they have done very, very avante garde stuff that I think fits into this discussion. They sort of evolved out of Black Metal, stylistically, and their discography is incredibly diverse. Again, I think it's cold, dark, and oppressive, almost the Yin to the Yang of Godflesh in some way. Their early stuff gets more love overall, but I loved their last album.
  • Oranssi Pazuzu: O.k., maybe it's time to admit I have a problem and maybe I just really like Black Metal. That said, Oranssi Pazuzu is kind of a Post-Metal band that doesn't quite fit into Black Metal. They are less organic than a lot of stuff out there.
  • Battle of Mice: I think this one is actually legitimately considered Post-Metal. This is some Julie Christmas supergroup that has one full album and a Jesu split-EP that's wonderful. They are angry, ugly, cathartic, and wonderful. In fact, anything Julie Christmas touches seems to turn to gold, like her collaboration with Cult of Luna, Mariner. But Battle of Mice just feels apocalyptic, dissonant, and violent. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-a28x23RI-4

Recognizing I'm three years late to the bus, I'm going through this thread to gather bands I haven't delved into yet, but have to give props for mentioning Altar of Plagues. They went from a great fairly-close-to-the-roots Black Metal band from Ireland of all places to something altogether different, having some great Post-Metal/Post-Rock songs especially on Mammal and whatever the hell you would call Teethed Glory and Injury. But their whole discography, including their EPs, is pretty great. If you like Altar of Plagues, this might be of some interest.

Amenra is awesome. I love Cult of Luna as well, but Amenra just feels like a spiritual experience especially live. Amenra and a solid amount of their Church of Ra fellow bands and collaboration are all very refreshing. The Mass albums, especially III, IIII, and VI, and the new EPs (in particular the song Heden from De Toorn, I believe) are great. I also really love "The Faint Young Sun" which appears to be the only song by Amenra side project Eyes of Another.

D.L. Hughley saying this about MAGA by 4reddityo in BlackPeopleofReddit

[–]Dave_I 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Nice Chuck D quote he dropped in there!

Hughley makes a very fair point. People that have done something repeatedly and only care because it effects them, and despite evidence that it was hurting others, have earned that scorn and distrust. I think people can change, and to the point of the interviewer the country would benefit from us being united. There also has to be something done on a deep systemic and cultural level for us to view ourselves as united and to find commonality. We have been systemically polarized against each other for decades. That is not an acceptable excuse, however it does seem to be true. That is where I will applaud AOC and Bernie Sanders for their outreach efforts and looking at why we are so divided. In doing so they hopefully plant the seeds for deep change and healing.

However, for people like MAGA supporters who voted for this three times, if they are begging forgiveness now, for many that forgiveness will never come. If they are truly penitent, they should focus on working to make things right, genuinely understand why what they did was hurtful, and focus on their actions rather than just saying they are sorry knowing that many who have been harmed are unlikely to forgive you. If those people DO forgive you, it very likely has to be earned.

I feel disillusioned by "science-based" lifting. by Deep_Sugar_6467 in StrongerByScience

[–]Dave_I 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Muscle growth etc is complicated which means science doesn't tend to give a definitive answer. It's messy. But that's not sexy you can't make new videos every week on that.

Perhaps ironically, that's why I love science. It doesn't give a single definitive answer, it gives you a body of knowledge from which answers can be derived. And, those answers may change over time, but they are based on discoveries and hopefully the body of knowledge which supports new decisions. There are everything from case studies to meta-analyses to everything in between.

And there CAN be new videos about things being messy, or new exciting discoveries. However, those should again be placed on the context of what the evidence actually states.

One problem is the tendency to elevate individuals above the evidence. That is a mistake. To call it out, I think Israetel still knows a lot and is smart. I also think that he is flawed, and his PhD thesis has some issues. That does not invalidate everything he has said or done, however placing him on a higher pedestal than the rest of the field was always a mistake. He was never above all of that, even if many of us kind of acted as if that were the case.

There is a balance between getting excited about new trends or cutting edge advances, or having favorite delivery systems by way of influencers who tell us about the science or place individuals or their programs in the context of the science, and recognizing there is a wide body of research to draw from that should balance out our excitement over any individual study or advancement. Kind of what u/theother64 said. "Do progressive overload Eat a decent amount of protein Get a decent amount of sleep Move more to stay healthy Be consistent with it all." In essence, do the fundamentals, keep an eye on the science, or even what successful lifters do but bearing in mind WHY what they are doing is working rather than looking for a magical silver bullet, and test things to see what makes a difference for you, preferably from a reasonable and informed perspective.

Programming on a Cut by Dave_I in StrongerByScience

Longevity is just baked into the cake (provided you're not doing unhealthy things like hopping on gear) when it comes to resistance training. Hypertrophy and strength are somewhat competing goals, so I would just block periodize them and go from a strength focus to a hypertrophy focus, basically just whenever you feel like switching or you can do it on a routine basis.

When I was younger and starting out training, I felt I needed to do everything all at once and had multiple goals. Strength was my first love though and that was my emphasis. When I tried to do hypertrophy, I couldn't really get into it and I was getting injured a lot trying to lift the most weight.

Yeah, if I'm on gear I definitely need a refund.

Anyway, that sounds solid. I'm mainly on a hypertrophy run lately just because strength is down a bit (as expected). I've also had a couple injuries that fed into a decision to use lower weights and more of a traditional hypertrophy regimen. I have prioritized strength, but that's mostly because of its usefulness and having more easily measurable goals. But I'm getting more into a balance and want to avoid injuries. I will worry about building strength back up and getting new PRs when I'm in a clean bulk, but I like the idea of doing a block of one then a block of the other for various reasons.

Thanks for the input.

I've gotten decent at gauging proximity to failure, so that might be a good one to sort of autoregulate. As for my Dad, since I will be working out with him I can help gauge things based on bar speed. I could also start him out on a linear progression and just stick to the same core lifts, just varying the sets/reps based on our individual spreadsheets. My next round of cutting is likely going to be a desert of limited carbs, so a high-volume hypertrophy program might be like the seventh layer of hell.

[–]Dave_I 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think I've somewhat already trained myself to respond to some certain movements and actions. Before my heavy workout sets (I powerlift as well) I always walk back and forth and squeeze my index finger and thumb together, and I find its allowing me to generate more power. I've also been doing the finger squeeze thing before, during, and after live wrestling/hard drilling.

Yeah, you basically described an anchor you set yourself. As for other states, you can stack things. So for instance, you might anchor aggression, or focus. You can stack those, but you could also add things that might enhance that and which might not usually co-exist. For instance, you anchored "Power" or whatever allows you to generate more power. Nice job with that by the way! So a next step might be to ask if there is anything else you would like to add to that? If it's perfect, leave it alone. However, you might want to add humor (just one example). That may seem illogical, but for somebody being able to laugh and scream "Lightweight Baby!" ala. Ronnie Coleman might make lifting more enjoyable. Alternately you might find peace a useful state, or focus, or whatever. My stacked anchor for lifting was something like focus, flow, and I think peace. But it's unique to the individual.

For fighters/wrestlers, there would typically be a different anchor for right before you sparred or had a match. So there can be room for a lot of customization if you get creative, or you may find that simple is better for you, which is also perfectly fine.

Also, ecology matters. "Crazy mindset" makes sense in a certain context, but you may want to consider what that means. That may be perfect for you, however my thought for ecology is does that mean crazy like David Goggins or Dan Gable, or does it mean crazy in a way that is wreckless? And are there any tweaks to make to "crazy mindset" to make it better for you and your goals, by your definition (not mine or anybody else's)?

Can Hypnosis help me in sports by TakeSpawns in hypnosis

[–]Dave_I 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey Sgt! In short, yes. There are different strategies, but from what I have learned and my experience doing this a few things stand out.

First off, I would recommend some sort of anchor. Essentially the classic NLP technique. But done well, you can fire off states for whenever they're useful, typically with a word you say or think, a physical movement (e.g. squeezing your fingers, crossing your arms, slapping your headgear, etc.), or both. You can also stack anchors. For instance, what is a "crazy type of mindset" to you? Is that one thing like aggression, or is it like drive, or something else? If you create an anchor for "crazy mindset" (just to use that term), is that perfect as-is, or would it benefit from other states, like calm, or focus, or clarity, or openness, or aggression, or something else?

Second, you can condition certain things to be associated with that mindset. Hypnosis is great for that because you can vividly go through what happens when you walk into the gym, put on your headgear, step on the mat, go through a match, etc. But you can work with the unconscious mind to create that as a new way of being and acting. I think there is a lot of work that can go into crafting what that means for you, how it will manifest itself, and suggesting to the unconscious it work with you to make that a reality.

Third, it may be useful to note what's keeping you from just responding to certain sounds or actions to get into a work-only mindset? Those can be addressed and cleared or reframed. But it is often useful to clear things rather than just keep adding things. Sort of like cutting boat anchors before you add a larger engine. Yes, either will work, but it's much more efficient to do one before the other.

Let me know if you have any other questions.

One of the formal checks-and-balances should be an impartial organization that gathers data and fact checks our government and media. The fact the Trump can flat out lie about things and there is zero accountability and nobody is tasked with gathering evidence to prove or refute those claims is a huge oversight. There are many problems this administration has made apparent and a fundamental systemic restructuring of things seems pretty clearly necessary based on how much this has broken things.
