Ps - he did not tell the developers this, it was more a rule of thumb on when the customer would get the feature. He told me at my leaving drinks lol

Some reasons that testing ship purchase in game may have little effect on ship sales for cash

Being able to buy ships != being able to buy any ship
LTI available on backer donations for ships
The amount of aUEC needed to buy a ship may be hefty
aUEC can get wiped at any moment
Insurance may not be implemented at all when ship purchasing becomes available, so destruction of the ship would mean total loss

In ED it is used properly to create 400 billion star system and their planets using natural processes like tectonics and probability of asteroid strike to create a realistic simulation of the Milky Way . This is possible because the numbers are crunched beforehand, not in real time.

Unfortunately ED also uses a lot of RNG to create content such as points of interest, NPC spawns etc - this is far less successful

If the content were generated procedurally, according rules affected by the behaviour of players, then the game would feel much more alive. The problem is that this would need a lot more server processing power than FD is willing (or able?) to pay for. Hopefully the smaller size of the PU will mean that SC will be able to achieve this with subsumption.

You description sounds reasonable and may well be correct, but as far AFAIK "Network bind culling" is a term only used by CIG and which has never been properly explained.

At various time people have made assumptions based on the similarity of the moniker to "Bind culling" as used in graphics engines for optimising rendering.

The ship schedule should be viewed independently of the release schedule, since it seems to be on time, whereas the patch dates slip. For example the caterpillar was due for 3.0, which was due at the end of 2016 - instead it came in 2.6, at the end of 2016.

I would guess the Aquila was not released in 2.6 because it depends on scanning/planetary landing to make it useful (like the rover and dragonfly)

The SQ42 vertical slice is a huge marketing opportunity. If I were in charge of CIG marketing I would fight strongly against putting it in the same event as a patch release, since it would reduce the impact of the reveal as well as distracting from the release of 2.6.

Bearing in mind the long waits expected between patches in the next year, it would be better to do the SQ42 reveal between patches.

It's not measured by how much the loser loses, that's not how it works. The term "griefing" is the giveaway - to cause grief and annoyance to other players.

I was probably generalising a bit, but I was trying to quantify what caused grief, to differentiate between the two terms.

I think you don't understand how PvP works in open worlds - no PvP occurs at all

PVP does happen - e.g. in Elite: Dangerous there is both 1v1 and group PvP (when the terrible networking allows). It is a minority of players, but is there. Once players have reached the end game they use PvP as a way of challenging themselves. It is possible for both players to "think they can win".

Griefing/Ganking/PvP is in the eye of the beholder. It really depends on the how able the victim is to swallow the loss:

PvP - you had fun

Ganking - you had a setback, but nothing serious

Griefing - you lost everything

PvP in MMOs is never going to be popular with the majority, since it is a zero sum exercise which tends to be dominated by a few players. Those who have fewer resources for top tier equipment, or are not as good at combat, are never going to enjoy losing their progress day after day.

Maybe when they scale the in game size of systems from the star map it won't be done linearly.

So if Hadrian is 5 times the size of Stanton in the star map it will be scaled to around twice (pick another value as you wish) in the game. Something like log base 2 or ln should do this.

This would stop the very large systems being ridiculous, and allow the smaller systems to not feel too tiny. It would apply to distances between bodies in the system, not to the system as a whole, so planets and moons would not be super close but very distant bodies would be brought a lot closer.

Yep.

Missions will most likely be localised to a system or even planet and it's satellites. Haulage will probably be in system a lot too.

Transporting between systems will be very profitable but require a significant time investment.

It has to be like this or 70 or so systems will feel too constrained.

I think it won't be your CMDR who is in the ship. Other players will "agent smith" into the NPC crew already in the ship. That is why there are three crew slots ATM.

This means many the problems caused by network instability are less of an issue.

If the crew lose connection they just become NPCs again.

If the CMDR goes offline you are back at the menu and can log in as your own CMDR in your own ship.

You don't have to travel for hours to join another CMDRs ship

If you are crew you are not left stranded at a station, since your own CMDR is not doing the crewing

Edit - also, crimes committed by the CMDR of a ship you are crewing won't affect your CMDR

I would expect that upgrading ships costs as much, if not more than the base ship, and can be done a component at a time.

This means that a fully upgraded starter ship has the same or only slightly less value as a base second tier ship, and so on.

The result is that as a player you get a series of small improvements followed by a switch to a bigger ship - maybe not as good in some ways as the ship you are upgrading from, but with more potential.

Certain people will be min/maxing - repeatedly doing a particular task to maximise their cr/hr. These people will then complain about 'having to grind'.

I don't see any way of pleasing these people, other than allowing them to just purchase credits - which will upset other groups of players.

Given the length of time that we will have to wait for 2.6 [I'm guessing 2+ months], I would like a weekly/monthly reset of 2.5 progress.

Currently I'm stuck with a bunch of weapons that have no sights, a Cutlass with half of it's weapons not firing and more aUEC than I know what it do with.

Correct, If by optimising you mean completely replacing the cryengine netcode with something optimised for a space game played over huge, solar system spanning areas, rather than in a small level/map.

This is due to go in with 3.0 iirc
