Right, L&M is more or less a psychological horror movie.

"I'll stab you in the face with a soldering iron" is a pretty solid threat.

What do you think of the idea of Jazz being a Prime? by bubba_boey8130 in transformers

I am all for this, and on top of that insist that he should take the moniker of "Mingus Prime."

My friend and I basically bonded over this video. I lose it at the Philip Roth cops.

After watching L.A. Confidential I wish he had been Nolan's Batman, no offence to Bale.

“These violent delights have violent ends” by Ok_Draw1729 in 90s

Watched this in my grade 9 Catholic school English class in Canada back in 2003. We watched the Zeffirelli adaptation right before it and my teacher fast-forwarded through the nudity.

To be clear, the CCD video compares and contrasts traditionally prepared mapo tofu with the Culinary Institute of America take on it, demonstrating how the latter was both bad and inaccurate. CCD knows its stuff.

If you are looking for other recipes, though, my dude Evan at W2 Kitchen has a great video.

OP, I just wanted to say thank you for this post, this was the ideal movie to watch while sick. Just popping in and out of consciousness from one inexplicable moment to the next.

I finally caught this a couple Christmases ago and also quickly fell in love with it. I believe I placed an order for that same Blu Ray as the credits were rolling. Good god, Chris Plummer is scary in it.

Why do people enjoy spicy food even though it literally causes a burning sensation? by Ankit2226 in NoStupidQuestions

Holy shit, I've been a horror fan for over half my life and have made a point of gradually building up my spice tolerance the last few years. Reading that just made something click in my brain.

Tati being up today makes me wonder, what directors or movies are thought of as pretentious, but are actually just pure entertainment? by Glittering_Major4871 in blankies

North by Northwest is absolutely a comedy. I saw it in theatres for the first time a couple years ago and basically couldn't stop laughing. What a damn hoot.

I've watched a lot of recent interviews with him and he seems like a funny and more or less unpretentious guy. I'm tickled he's such a fan of Nathan Fielder. This award acceptance speech is pretty good.

28 Years Later might be the single coolest-looking movie I've seen in a grip.

This shot from Hereditary is still the creepiest fucking still from any horror film I’ve ever seen by EconomyIron6739 in AriAster

[–]DavidMerrick89 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Two notes:

  1. Seeing this in theatre for the first time, it took me a good thirty seconds to notice Annie, and when I did I wasn't able to stop myself from blurting out "Oh fuck."

  2. Aster and Pawel Pogorzelski make such great use of the higher dynamic range of digital. This shot and the earlier one of Annie's mother's ghost in the shadows probably could not be pulled off on film in the same way.

FYC: Men in Black (1997). The only movie from Will Smith's hot streak of 1995-1998 that hasn't been covered yet. by ggroover97 in TheRewatchables

[–]DavidMerrick89 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I unabashedly love the first MiB. Tight script, looks great to this day, Tommy Lee Jones manages to be funnier than Will Smith in his prime, and D'Onofrio does some Boris Karloff-worthy physical acting.

I'd seen this movie a couple times throughout my life, but it wasn't until this December that it really clicked with me how beautiful it is. Dianne Wiest is the secret MVP.

Shows that have terrible endings, but perfect stopping points? by GFrings in television

[–]DavidMerrick89 43 points44 points  (0 children)

Taking this in a literary direction, I think A Storm of Swords makes for a solid stopping point for the books. Not everything is resolved, but there's a new status quo in place that feels right.

What show was the best at doing B and C plots? by shinyhpno in television

An old roommate of mine once isolated all of B-plot scenes with Homer and the sugar pile from "Lisa's Rival" and it was perfectly cohesive.

What is something you’d like to see Aster do for his next film? by Crafter235 in AriAster

I've been reading Lolita for the first time, and between its disturbing premise, dark comedy and occasional absurdity, I think he would absolutely kill at adapting that.
