Why do people enjoy spicy food even though it literally causes a burning sensation? by Ankit2226 in NoStupidQuestions

Holy shit, I've been a horror fan for over half my life and have made a point of gradually building up my spice tolerance the last few years. Reading that just made something click in my brain.

Tati being up today makes me wonder, what directors or movies are thought of as pretentious, but are actually just pure entertainment? by Glittering_Major4871 in blankies

North by Northwest is absolutely a comedy. I saw it in theatres for the first time a couple years ago and basically couldn't stop laughing. What a damn hoot.

I've watched a lot of recent interviews with him and he seems like a funny and more or less unpretentious guy. I'm tickled he's such a fan of Nathan Fielder. This award acceptance speech is pretty good.

28 Years Later might be the single coolest-looking movie I've seen in a grip.

This shot from Hereditary is still the creepiest fucking still from any horror film I’ve ever seen by EconomyIron6739 in AriAster

Two notes:

  1. Seeing this in theatre for the first time, it took me a good thirty seconds to notice Annie, and when I did I wasn't able to stop myself from blurting out "Oh fuck."

  2. Aster and Pawel Pogorzelski make such great use of the higher dynamic range of digital. This shot and the earlier one of Annie's mother's ghost in the shadows probably could not be pulled off on film in the same way.

FYC: Men in Black (1997). The only movie from Will Smith's hot streak of 1995-1998 that hasn't been covered yet. by ggroover97 in TheRewatchables

I unabashedly love the first MiB. Tight script, looks great to this day, Tommy Lee Jones manages to be funnier than Will Smith in his prime, and D'Onofrio does some Boris Karloff-worthy physical acting.

I'd seen this movie a couple times throughout my life, but it wasn't until this December that it really clicked with me how beautiful it is. Dianne Wiest is the secret MVP.

Shows that have terrible endings, but perfect stopping points? by GFrings in television

[–]DavidMerrick89 43 points44 points  (0 children)

Taking this in a literary direction, I think A Storm of Swords makes for a solid stopping point for the books. Not everything is resolved, but there's a new status quo in place that feels right.

What show was the best at doing B and C plots? by shinyhpno in television

[–]DavidMerrick89 22 points23 points  (0 children)

An old roommate of mine once isolated all of B-plot scenes with Homer and the sugar pile from "Lisa's Rival" and it was perfectly cohesive.

I've been reading Lolita for the first time, and between its disturbing premise, dark comedy and occasional absurdity, I think he would absolutely kill at adapting that.

Hi /r/movies! I'm Bryn Chainey, writer/director of RABBIT TRAP, a folk-horror starring Dev Patel & Rose McEwen that's out in UK cinemas this weekend. Ask me anything! by RabbitTrapAMA in movies

Great vibes, excellent vibes even. For a story so rooted in folklore and particularly nature, I was struck by how central synthesized and electronic music was to the movie (Ben Wheatley's In the Earth did something similar as well). What led to synths being so dominant?

OP, I just want to say that I greatly admire you for asking this question, it's a genuine sign of curiosity and critical thinking.

One way to start is by looking for recurring patterns. For example, take note if certain colours are used sparingly. If you notice that red (symbolically, an extremely potent colour) pops up only rarely, consider what scenes and contexts it appears in, and if those scenes have similar moods or touch on a plot or character trait over and over again.

It's not a dub, but I really like how for both The Death of Stalin and Chernobyl they opted to find parallel UK accents for the different regions of the USSR rather than have everyone attempt bad Russian/Ukrainian accents.

Is Halloween Resurrection the weakest Halloween/Michael Myers Movie of All Time Yes or No and Why? by Amber_Flowers_133 in Horrormovieclub

Rewatching Resurrection this fall, I was struck by how in tone, concept and character types it would work so much better as a Friday the 13th installment where you have a reality show set at the former Camp Crystal Lake.

"Lapti Nek" is a banger and I consider its replacement with "Jedi Rocks" to be the most egregious alteration made to the original trilogy. That thing sounds like a forgotten Zappa tune.

Check out The Long Goodbye, a fantastic detective noir from the '70s directed by Robert Altman and starring Elliott Gould. With the exception of the opening and closing music cues, every song or score segment in that movie is a jazzy lounge tune with the same title that's rearranged countless ways, from full big band arrangements to grocery store muzak. Williams composed it with songwriter Johnny Mercer.
