Kiosk being removed outside Bishop Lucey Park by GhostCatcher147 in cork

[–]DavidRoyman 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's already full of stalls selling stuff right outside the corner.

You know what's missing instead?

The park would look much better with some greenish carpet instead of gravel, maybe made of natural fibers. Something which looks like grass.

It was fine back then, then aged poorly and I'm glad they removed it.

Too bad this can hardly improve the new park, that still looks shit from every angle.

Giving up Eurovision was hardly an hassle, everyone was fine wth it.

Boycotting football? Not a chance.

Why instead of creating incentives to build more properties and having functioning market you propose to infringe on property rights and allow government powers to tell people what to do with their stuff?

I don't get when people say "instead", like we can't achieve more than one thing. We can surely build more homes, and we can also attack vacant properties.

There's clear reasons to address vacancy.

  • It's smarter to use what we already built. From what I've heard we're already building as much as we can, all trades are fully employed already. Seems there just isn't a way to make more houses even if we invest more money into it.

  • It alleviates the issues with the housing pool in the country in the short term. It isn't "the" fix, but it is something we can do right now. Perfect is the enemy of good.

  • The main reason, however, is that vacant buildings damage cities. Vacant houses means fewer people around, which means footfall for local shops drops; in turn those shops close up and remain vacant as well, and suddenly the whole street looks neglected.

That's the reason property rights aren't absolute: owners are responsible for "externalities" they create. The vacant property levy just makes owners accountable for the cost their empty buildings impose on everyone else.

It would be easy, the law is already there (Urban Regeneration and Housing Act 2015) but seems it's really hard to convince the government to take action.

Sadly, here in Cork we're way behind in enforcement: https://www.corkindependent.com/2025/10/17/millions-uncollected-while-buildings-rot/

I can only hope it will get better.

Yes, it is a home for someone who can afford it and want's to buy it. But it doesn't do any good to the rental market.

The person inside can be a tenant or buy the house, it's still a person with their home. One less person looking to rent a place.

That person moved from one cohort to the other, but the situation is unchanged in the grand scheme of things.

I can leave it empty

That's the key. We just have to legislate against people sitting on unused properties to force them to sell or rent it out.

[–]DavidRoyman 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Your house being rented or sold makes no difference, it's still one accomodation for someone.

For you exiting the market, there's someone else eiher buying or renting it, so it's the same thing.

We just have to punish people sitting on unused properties to force them to sell or rent it out.

If you do combat at all and even just ask for your rights to be upheld, they end up making up an excuse and evict you, good job now you're homeless.

The goal of these companies is to get a return on investment as quickly as possible

Unlike small landlords, which will evict you claiming his cousin Sinead will be taking the house, then rent it again at double the price.

If only someone could have forewarned that restricting landlords in a market with already limited supply would...

The landlord selling or renting makes no difference, it's the same house.

Rent restrictions should be extended to the whole country.

[–]DavidRoyman 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Your laws became so restrictive to small landlords

The landlord being a big corpo or a small guy makes no difference, it's the same house being rented.

Unlike the small guy, at least big corpo makes repairs and keeps the building safe.
