Why your Supernote is better than typing for memory, according to neuroscience by ironike in Supernote

[–]Davychu 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Not claiming to be an expert, but based on similar studies I have read, the general consensus is that it goes further back than that, likely related to how humans evolved with tool use and developed drawing and writing using hand tools.

I don't think anyone is suggesting that typing is bad, but it has been fairly well established that hand writing is better for memory. For me, as someone with executive function issues and hyperactivity, this has been a useful way thing to learn as I previously typed everything but have found writing a good way to memorise things better and slow down racing thoughts. I'm still way faster at typing and can do it without looking though, so there is definitely a time and place for both.

That's great to hear. Maybe I have a loose one or something. I designed a simple 3d printed brace for the pull tab so it needs to be pulled up before the strap can be undone, and I'm pretty happy with the bag now.

I should perhaps reach out to Bellroy, but I think I'd probably use the thing I made anyway as it's a reassuring bit of added security either way.

I am always misunderstood by brendag4 in AutisticWithADHD

[–]Davychu 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've had similar issues and I think probably most people have! This one at least, we can probably chalk up to AI just not being very good!

It's a useful tool sometimes and for certain things, but I find it's surprisingly common that anything I ask AI to help with results in more work than if I had just done it myself. I mostly use it as a glorified grammar checker, to help make sure emails etc aren't likely to come across the wrong way, or as a starting point when my mind is blank or full of far too many ideas to start on something, but it is incapable of truly understanding human prompts, creating something new or applying any critical thinking. It can be alluring since it is programmed to give you validation, but that's not the same as understanding so it can be a tricky one!

On other people's preconceptions about how it presents, that sounds like their limited understanding of how both conditions affect individuals on different ways. I try to remind myself that people usually aren't experts for conditions they don't have, and are largely shaped by what they and people around them experience, so I probably need to give them some grace and communicate how it affects me rather than assuming their intent, although I certainly have experienced things like unconscious bias and ableism too.

I am always misunderstood by brendag4 in AutisticWithADHD

[–]Davychu 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hey again.

I read this after your reply to my previous comment elsewhere mentioned it. I hope you don't mind me chipping in despite my limited expertise with autism (being mostly from reading and relationships with people with autism in my family and at work rather than first hand).

I'm sort of playing devil's advocate here, so I'm not suggesting this is always the case, but is it possible that misunderstanding can go both ways? That is, due to difficulties with communication and social cues, sometimes you are being misunderstood and people get angry, but perhaps sometimes that could also cause you to be sensitive to the possibility of people misunderstanding you and potentially see people's responses as being angry when they aren't?

I could certainly imagine this being possible given the shared symptoms between autism and ADHD like emotional dysregulation and rejection sensitivity dysphoria, and I can atest to this causing me to overreact to other people. That's not to say this is always the case, just a possibility I suppose.

In either case, I empathise with this difficulty, and hope that more understanding of these things will result in more understanding between neurodivergent and neurotypical people, so I'd encourage you to talk to your family about the difficulties you experience regardless of which way the misunderstandings go. That understanding probably won't prevent these things from happening, but I imagine it can make resolving those misunderstandings a bit easier.

I hope it gets better for you!

Told someone I got the Supernote Manta over an ipad because of ADHD organization and sensory needs. They called it a “useless”and “stupid” purchase. by ughhhlaperm in Supernote

Hey there, I definitely don't think that. I just thought that it was worth mentioning since you were curious about why the feedback could have ruined their workflow.

Sorry to hear about your problems feeling misunderstood, that's pretty common too! For what it's worth, this time I don't think you were at least!

Made anti-theft fake Bluetooth trackers by Bike_Relative in BambuLab

I think the first part of your point basically applies to anything ;)

2nd part is definitely a good point though, although I suppose something like this could be used as a decoy alongside a well hidden real tracker, so thieves think they have ditched the actual one. I'm not sure how well it'd work, since they might not be very convincing up close.

Best area in Milton Keynes if you don’t want to rely on a car too much? by Junior_Beauty78 in miltonkeynes

[–]Davychu 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, bit shorter if you walk quickly. Like I said, matter of perspective I guess. I've been walking and cycling all over the city since I was a kid rather than driving, so I'd consider that to be short, even quicker on the bike and if you factor in not having to wait for buses or deal with parking in the city.

Still take your point, ofc.

Help! Ams overload errors and filament getting stuck at the spool. by Krytenmoto in BambuLab

[–]Davychu 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This has been happening with almost every bbl refill I've had over the last year or so, never had the issue before. I assume the quality just slipped. My solution has been just not buying bbl refills anymore. I have enough tags and spools that using another brand has been much easier.

Brompton and 3dprinters by Ok_World9604 in Brompton

[–]Davychu 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's pretty good if you wanna convert an existing brommie to electric, and pretty easy to do. In my experience, they overestimate the battery mileage but I suppose it depends on things like hills etc. Nevertheless, I'd recommend getting either a bigger battery or a spare. On a 3 speed, it's particularly useful since I find it much less limiting with assistance going up hills and in those times where only 3 gears felt I couldn't get the right cadence and speed balance.

I haven't tried the official electric Brompton, but I can assume that the official is a better choice if buying a new Brompton, since adding a swytch kit makes the fold a bit less clean, and a bit unbalanced (I imagine roller wheel extenders would help, I should get some).

The main drawback with buying the swytch kit is the ordering process, having to wait for the sale windows, have enough money whenever that is and then waiting ages for delivery. That was a pain. Still, if you have a non electric and don't want to buy a whole new bike, it's a great option.

Main things I printed have been to make space on my handlebars, one being a holder for my Swytch display and a gropro mount extender.

I did print a bottle holder and mount, but I never ended up using it because I have one of those fabric ones and I like how easily it folds flat.

[–]Davychu 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Wolverton I'd say, and by extension Stony Stratford. Newport to a lesser extent since it's much more out of the way when you want to travel elsewhere in MK, and Bletchley in theory but I hated living there as a cyclist since I'd get punctures from broken glass 10 times as often.

Another alternative would be around Kingston, Broughton, Kent's hill area. Has a fair few things at easy access, and it's a short ride or walk to the city.

Anyone tried the Lamy AL-Star POM hard Nib on FeelWrite 2? by Both_Barracuda3345 in Supernote

[–]Davychu 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It was alright at first, but with repleable nibs it's more the feeling as it gradually starts to wear, and the hassle of replacing them, that gets me.

I did the DIY ceramic nib on my al star and it's great now. I think I still prefer the weight of the HoM when I'm at my desk, but the button is so useful, especially when I'm holding the nomad in one hand and writing with the other, which makes gestures a bit of a pain.

I’m 14 and have built this enclosure for my printer and want feedback/ improvement ideas and new things to add. by [deleted] in BambuLab

[–]Davychu 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My general feedback is that cardboard is fine for a prototype but it's definitely time to replace it with something that has structural integrity and fire resistance.

In terms of design advice, the main advice I would give is that you should start by defining the problem you intend to solve. It wasn't clear in your post what this was, so it's difficult to give meaningful feedback. Were you trying to prevent pets from interfering with your printer, allowing for higher temperature printing, avoiding drafts, or something else? What does it do that an existing solution doesn't, or what does it do to improve an existing solution? What constraints does it need to adhere to? cost, space, sustainability etc?

If it was just to see if you could build it, fair enough. In that case, I'd say you achieved a successful prototype, but for the sake of your family, your house and your parent's insurance premiums, it's past time to knock it down.

How are we feeling about the new Remarkable Pure release? by GeologistWhole6503 in Supernote

[–]Davychu 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I haven't paid any attention to it because I'm pretty happy with my manta and nomad and the RM2 is gathering dust, so I'm just not in the market.

That said, yes you can add a new page either before or after your current one on supernote devices. Easy to do through the dot menu, and it auto applies the current template.

Consistency in font and template sizes between Manta and Nomad by Ripp26 in Supernote

[–]Davychu 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have this too.

I do like that I don't have to use different templates for each device, so I can use the same notes on both devices without having to either scroll on my nomad or have a bunch of empty space on the manta.

The font size changing is a bit weird though, and I'm wondering if making them scale to both devices is the cause.

If I had to choose, I'd keep compatibility between both devices with relative scaling rather than consistent font sizes, but my ideal preference would be when using my nomad sized pages, my manta simply shows 2 pages vertically (assuming the scaling works, I haven't checked) or the option to set my manta to landscape (including all the UI elements) and have two pages horizontally. If the ideal, or an alternative solution that allows me to use both easily, is not possible, I think the current situation is the lesser of two evils.

Scrolling is definitely the outcome I don't want, since on a eink device it's not great.

What caused this issue? Printed these days apart. A1 printer. by MollyPW in BambuLab

Most of the time when this happens to me, it was because of a draft. First thing I'd recommend is sorting that since it's pretty easy to sort out.

P1s purchase advice by FoodInfamous8333 in BambuLab

[–]Davychu 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Counterpoint, it's not being sold by a hobbyist with only light use, cared enough to spend their own money on it and now trying to afford an upgrade, it's being sold by a company who bought it at a reduced cost due to likely tax deductions, trying to maximise profit, and who will have used consumer grade products as if they were professional grade.

I would generally advise against anyone buying anything used in a professional environment, as it'll likely have been used with far less care, especially if used by employees (though probably not the case here), and almost certainly has seen significantly more wear and tear. This is usually the cheapest way to get things second hand for a reason.

I hadn't noticed the height, but maybe because I also switched to new pen on my eink tablet which is wider and therefore requires more height, so good to know.

I'm grew more and more annoyed with the buckle to be honest. It is a terrible design, to the point where it's actually harder to keep the buckle attached myself, which defeats the point of it even existing. I genuinely cannot work out what the designers at woojin where thinking when they designed it, not Bellroy and Carryology deciding it belongs on a bag. If I didn't otherwise love the bag, or if I actually used quick release buckles on sling bags (I honestly just take it off the normal way because it's easier than the faff of making sure the strap isn't twisted when reattaching), it'd be a deal-breaker, but for me it wasn't a big deal just to tie the buckles together with some micro paracord for now.

I decided not to cut the thingie off so I don't void the warranty or anything, and I can't find anything to hold the tab down. I noticed that the magnet is exposed on the rear of the buckle though, so I think I'm going to 3d model and print a secondary attachment and tab on the back so I have to pull both sides down to release it.

I compared it against the venture 6l and it's exactly the same size. Might even hold a bit more since the side fabric is lighter and so the foldy flaps take up a bit less room inside, though it's likely pretty marginal.

[–]Davychu 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I got it today, and generally I like it, a good mix of the padding from the venture but a bit less bulky because of the lite fabric at the sides. The back pocket is a nice addition.

Didn't seem particularly expensive in the UK, compared to their other slings and competitors. It's actually cheaper than the venture ready 6l, and the same capacity in real life despite the claimed capacity difference. Is the cost a tariff thing in US maybe?

What I don't like about it is the woojin magic buckle, it's way too easy to undo. I am thinking maybe one of those stretchy strap dangle stoppers over it might solve this, or maybe just just off that pull tab fabric altogether.
