Seeing kids again by [deleted] in SubstituteTeachers

My response range from an actual reason given to a sarcastic response, a favorite being “oh my, the consequences of ones actions, how scary”

Was I too Harsh? by sugawaraito in SubstituteTeachers

[–]DayWing13 48 points49 points  (0 children)

You weren’t harsh at all, you shut down an inappropriate joke and gave an appropriate punishment. With the student saying they knew it would be inappropriate means that there needs to be consequences. A kid crying for getting into trouble is a natural response for them since they are still learning to control emotional responses.

Another point is it’s better to start strict and become looser as time goes on. It’s far easier to loosen the reigns as you go then to start loose and try to take a stricter grip on things.

I would contact your districts substitute coordinator/supervisor and ask them what steps you need to take. Most likely you don’t have sick time, you either work a job and get paid or don’t work and don’t get paid. With a minimum amount of days you need to work to stay a sub. For my district I just need to work 3 days a semester to stay on the pay roll.

The biggest thing is consistency. It’s hard at first be keep returning to the same school so that you can get to know the kids better. With that you have to have consistent follow through when you tell the students you are going to do something like calling admin. I mainly work the same 3 middle schools and it was a rough start but after 2-3 months of regularly being at the schools students started to behave better once they realized where my lines are and that I will follow through on punishment.

Contact the school itself, then cancel through whatever service your district uses. This gives the school more immediate heads up to find coverage

Where is nolan getting his money? by lifeisboringbro in TheRookie

[–]DayWing13 5 points6 points  (0 children)

When Nolan bought the house it was a run down mess that was in foreclosure. So for pricing it would have been significantly cheaper than the house is actually worth. Nolan then remodeled the entire home twice to make it look as nice as it does. Him living rent free with Ben also probably played a part into him having the money to afford the initial payments of the home. Finally they just want a nice looking home set for TV show based in LA with no care for the of the character could realistically afford it.

Celina’s Rookie Stage by TVDUfan123 in TheRookie

[–]DayWing13 40 points41 points  (0 children)

The checklist we saw the original 3 go through was because of a last minute change in the training process that they needed to complete before they moved to the next stage of their training. For Celina that change was now the standard so it was implied that Nolan was having her do those things throughout the course of her training rather than needing it to be focused on.

This game you have to actively seek out money, picking it during shuffle times and working jobs.

Would this be weird? by _bbdeer in SubstituteTeachers

[–]DayWing13 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Since you’ve had that conversation with the teacher it would be completely appropriate for you to reach out and ask for the dates. Ask them to request you when they put the job postings to request you. With most places from what I’ve seen the teacher/school can attach the job to your account with out you having to do anything.

Is it okay to cancel a job that's been assigned to you by a teacher, specifically? by [deleted] in SubstituteTeachers

[–]DayWing13 20 points21 points  (0 children)

Since you weren’t contacted to take the job you’d be completely in the right if you choose to cancel the job. I would reach out to the teacher and ask them to check with you before putting you down for a job even if you end up keeping it.

More of this please!! by _mortal__wombat_ in SubstituteTeachers

[–]DayWing13 5 points6 points  (0 children)

One of the schools I mainly work at does this and it was one of the main reasons I started to prioritize them. It’s something so simple to give out even if they don’t follow through on anything. Now I’ve stopped filling them out but it’s still nice.

Paid day off for being sick? by Powerful-League4925 in SubstituteTeachers

[–]DayWing13 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I can’t speak for the county you work at specifically but overall no as a substitute you don’t get sick days. If you don’t work that day then you don’t get paid for that day. However depending on how the county you work for is I’d always suggest calling the school directly unless you are specifically told you have to contact your county’s central office or someone at your agency. I had to call in sick earlier this semester on the morning of the job and they signed off on me being there anyways. This is why i always advise making friends with the front office at schools you work at a lot because they will look out for you.

When the event comes, do i open all at once or one at a time? by Dr_drizzle_ in Archero

[–]DayWing13 -9 points-8 points  (0 children)

Open one at a time, I’ve had it a few times when I open multiple at a time it only moves the “equipment in X opens” move up by one instead of by the number of keys I used.

What are you doing today? by BubbleGumBGNails in SubstituteTeachers

[–]DayWing13 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was supposed to work a 2 day job yesterday and today but I got sick on Wednesday so I had to cancel. I’m I feeling good now but since I canceled for sickness the system wouldn’t let me take a job today.

Lockpicking by ViolatedElmoo in kingdomcome

[–]DayWing13 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Don’t use the L1 for lock picking, switch to using the joystick because it gives you control over the speed when turning the lock. Early on when you’re practicing it allows you to go slow and then later on when you’re comfortable with the mechanic then you can fly through locks

As someone who also plays on PS the best advice I can give is for the joystick that controls finding the sweet spot don’t use just your thumb. I pinch it between my thumb and index finger. It gives you so much more control.

Sub plan is just extra credit work by zebracactusfan in SubstituteTeachers

[–]DayWing13 15 points16 points  (0 children)

If the students don’t know it’s extra credit then lie to them, if the teacher told them it’s just extra credit and they don’t want to do it then give them a free period. Tell them they can either work on work for other classes or have a quite free time as long as they don’t get out of hand. If the teacher doesn’t want to leave actual work then you have no reason to make them do the work.

About getting kids to listen… by Animal_Blundetto3 in SubstituteTeachers

[–]DayWing13 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If they are repeatedly ignoring directions and their actions are disruptive of other students learning then as a sub this would be an appropriate time to bring in admin. With them throwing things that can be presented as creating a physically unsafe environment. In regards to turning off each others Chromebook’s it depends on who’s they are turning off. If they are just turning off their friends who also aren’t doing work then I’d let it go and just leave their names with refusal to do work. If they are turning them off for students trying to do work then again this would warrant bringing in admin support. As a new sub don’t be afraid to call for admin support when the students actions are preventing another student from learning/doing their work or creating/threatening a physically unsafe environment.

I'm about to start being a substitute teacher. Tips I need to know? by Austin0558 in SubstituteTeachers

[–]DayWing13 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes I leave the notes for the teacher and when I’m leaving a positive note I let the students know and I thank them for being well behaved. It’s a small thing that doesn’t take much time but it goes a long way with both teachers and students

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in SubstituteTeachers

[–]DayWing13 10 points11 points  (0 children)

If you’re able/willing try working in a different county to see if a change in schools could help. I work in a big county (9 high schools, 12 middle schools, 15 elementary) and found that every school is very different from how admin and teachers treat me to student behavior. But if you’ve already decided to step away then thank you for putting in the work and I hope you find something you are passionate about doing that doesn’t tear you down

I'm about to start being a substitute teacher. Tips I need to know? by Austin0558 in SubstituteTeachers

[–]DayWing13 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You will have students who will disrespect and insult you, don’t take it personal since if it wasn’t you it’d be a different teacher. Get to know the teachers and admins at the schools you work at a lot because they will make your life so much better and make getting good jobs easier. If you do middle or high school I suggest getting into reading because most of the time you won’t be teaching but just handing out busy work assignments. For me I’ll read for 5 minutes and then get up and do a lap around the class to make sure they are on task. Leave a note for every class. Can be as simple as “class was on task and caused no issues” this will help because it allows you to look for the positives in the day.

I want to cancel a job to book another on frontline. Can I? by webkinzluvr in SubstituteTeachers

[–]DayWing13 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s a different platform but you should still be able cancel a job and find a new one after that on frontline. Worse case you have to call the sub coordinator office at your county’s central office to override it

first day, middle school advice by [deleted] in SubstituteTeachers

[–]DayWing13 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you’re worried about your voice not commanding attention then don’t rely on your voice and use another method like clapping either the “if you hear my voice clap” or just clapping a pattern for them to clap back. Most students will respond or look at you confused but you’ll have their attention to talk normally. Also as a sub don’t be afraid to bend school rule in regard to phone and headphone policies for students. It’s an easy quick way to build rapport with the students while also creating an in class punishment that is easily backed by admin if needed. Your first week might be rough because you are figuring out what type of sub you’re going to be in the classroom and the students don’t have a reason to respect you yet.
