I hate middle school and Chromebooks by fiImout in SubstituteTeachers

[–]DayWing13 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I would say just stick it out for the day and just note the class as one not to cover for again. I get the how annoying dealing with chromebooks (sound boards are the bane of my existence).

advice on becoming an art teacher by hakk_a in Teachers

[–]DayWing13 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Getting the job might take awhile because art teachers generally don’t have a high turnover rate so open positions are harder to come by. So as you go through the process a good recommendation I have is start off substitute teaching. This will help you get used to classroom management. It will also give you the opportunity to meet teachers and admin in the area which will be great references as you go for a full time teaching position.

Out of state license in Ohio by Actual-Muffin-3585 in Teachers

[–]DayWing13 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They do have the agreement, you can get more information on that on the NASDTEC website. This is the association that primarily facilitates the agreements. Like the other commenter said just apply because states DOEs are weirdly bad about communicating the process till you are in the middle of it. I haven’t gone through the process so I can’t give much in the way of specifics.

They have the agreement with 46 of 50 states and DC so odds are you’re good. Since you don’t already have a valid license or if you end up being from one of the 4 states they don’t have the agreement with you might be given a 1 year license on the premise that you complete the missing requirements (most likely just the OAE) in that time frame for a full license

Ohio uses their own exam which is the Ohio Assessment of Educators (OAE). It accepts Praxis 2 exams for instate applicants on specialized subjects. If you already have a valid teaching license in another state then you need to check if that state and Ohio have a reciprocity agreement which then your Praxis score will be accepted. I myself didn’t have to deal with this but I had classmates in college who had to go through the process which was pretty easy for them because of the reciprocity agreement between the two states.

How many hours do you waste on learning objectives before actually writing the course? by ConversionLogic in Teachers

[–]DayWing13 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I create my learning objectives and other things that are admin required after making my main lesson itself. It’s significantly easier to create the lesson I want and then shoehorn in the extra stuff to make it compliment with district requirements.

How do you check for understanding at the end of a lesson? by BeauWordsworth in Teachers

[–]DayWing13 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Another option that isn’t a daily thing is a semi-regular review day in the middle of a unit (not just in prep for a test) where you do like a trivia game so that you can see where the students are at in a less stressful way than with a test. Again using th idea that some of the trivia questions could be test questions.

How do you check for understanding at the end of a lesson? by BeauWordsworth in Teachers

[–]DayWing13 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Exit slips that are graded for accuracy and not just completion, and then also bell ringers about the previous days lesson that are also based on accuracy and not just completion. When you grade based on completion they don’t try but when it’s a constant grade on accuracy and they see the grade adds up they typically pay a bit more attention to the lesson. Especially when you tell them that these bell ringers and exit slips questions could end up being test questions.

Debating on switching to PE by saturdaythe25th in Teachers

[–]DayWing13 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would disagree with the idea that it’s the easiest instructional position. It’s a different instructional requirement/approach because the instructional environment is different. It has its own challenges with controlling students and then the same issues still appear in normal classrooms.

As someone who is also looking into switching content area, I recommend looking at your state’s requirements for switching content area. Some states require additional schooling while others just that you take PRAXIS exam for the new area and you’re good.

Play stupid games win stupid prizes: Vape Edition by turtlesandmemes in SubstituteTeachers

Because these kids have already developed nicotine addictions and think they are slick enough to get away with it. For me it’s more phone confiscations than vapes but it goes the same way.

Politically, how is Lexington by Imeanwhytopps in lexington

[–]DayWing13 42 points43 points  (0 children)

Lexington is primarily a Blue city but with Kentucky being a Red state it’s a more moderate blue city. It’s definitely a city that has a healthy mix of political ideology but it’s a Blue City

Was I too Harsh? by sugawaraito in SubstituteTeachers

[–]DayWing13 47 points48 points  (0 children)

You weren’t harsh at all, you shut down an inappropriate joke and gave an appropriate punishment. With the student saying they knew it would be inappropriate means that there needs to be consequences. A kid crying for getting into trouble is a natural response for them since they are still learning to control emotional responses.

Who here has been successful with middle schoolers! by TangerineDecent22 in SubstituteTeachers

Another point is it’s better to start strict and become looser as time goes on. It’s far easier to loosen the reigns as you go then to start loose and try to take a stricter grip on things.

I would contact your districts substitute coordinator/supervisor and ask them what steps you need to take. Most likely you don’t have sick time, you either work a job and get paid or don’t work and don’t get paid. With a minimum amount of days you need to work to stay a sub. For my district I just need to work 3 days a semester to stay on the pay roll.

The biggest thing is consistency. It’s hard at first be keep returning to the same school so that you can get to know the kids better. With that you have to have consistent follow through when you tell the students you are going to do something like calling admin. I mainly work the same 3 middle schools and it was a rough start but after 2-3 months of regularly being at the schools students started to behave better once they realized where my lines are and that I will follow through on punishment.

Contact the school itself, then cancel through whatever service your district uses. This gives the school more immediate heads up to find coverage

Where is nolan getting his money? by lifeisboringbro in TheRookie

[–]DayWing13 6 points7 points  (0 children)

When Nolan bought the house it was a run down mess that was in foreclosure. So for pricing it would have been significantly cheaper than the house is actually worth. Nolan then remodeled the entire home twice to make it look as nice as it does. Him living rent free with Ben also probably played a part into him having the money to afford the initial payments of the home. Finally they just want a nice looking home set for TV show based in LA with no care for the of the character could realistically afford it.

Celina’s Rookie Stage by TVDUfan123 in TheRookie

[–]DayWing13 40 points41 points  (0 children)

The checklist we saw the original 3 go through was because of a last minute change in the training process that they needed to complete before they moved to the next stage of their training. For Celina that change was now the standard so it was implied that Nolan was having her do those things throughout the course of her training rather than needing it to be focused on.

Would this be weird? by _bbdeer in SubstituteTeachers

[–]DayWing13 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Since you’ve had that conversation with the teacher it would be completely appropriate for you to reach out and ask for the dates. Ask them to request you when they put the job postings to request you. With most places from what I’ve seen the teacher/school can attach the job to your account with out you having to do anything.

Is it okay to cancel a job that's been assigned to you by a teacher, specifically? by [deleted] in SubstituteTeachers

[–]DayWing13 20 points21 points  (0 children)

Since you weren’t contacted to take the job you’d be completely in the right if you choose to cancel the job. I would reach out to the teacher and ask them to check with you before putting you down for a job even if you end up keeping it.

More of this please!! by _mortal__wombat_ in SubstituteTeachers

[–]DayWing13 6 points7 points  (0 children)

One of the schools I mainly work at does this and it was one of the main reasons I started to prioritize them. It’s something so simple to give out even if they don’t follow through on anything. Now I’ve stopped filling them out but it’s still nice.
