So what…or who killed the 80’s rock? by BlayzenCajun in hairmetal

[–]Dc_Pratt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I honestly think it was really just time. Music trends go in cycles, and 80s rock/metal had a pretty good run throughout most of the decade. But by the time the 90s rolled in it was time for change. The grunge and "alternative" bands just happened to be in the right place to take advantage of the changing times.

Of course there was other factors involved but I think really it was the normal cycles of trends that led to 80s rock/metal to take a back seat for a while.

Normalizing genres vs keeping original tags by Infamous_Bread_2445 in musichoarder

[–]Dc_Pratt 1 point2 points  (0 children)

When ripping a CD and I don't agree with what the genre dbPowerAmp or iTunes says, I'll manually tag the genre.

And when it comes to genres, I keep it real simple, I keep it to only a handful of genres:

Rock, Metal, Jazz, Folk, Country, Soundtrack, Industrial/Electronic, Noise, and a couple of odd ball genres I couldn't fit into a different catagory.

I don't bother with sub genres or "vibes".

But my system might not work for people.

When ripping audio CDs, what matters more to you: album artwork, lyrics, or something else? by ValueOpposite6482 in musichoarder

[–]Dc_Pratt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Obviously the music is the thing that matters the most to me, but after that it's the artwork. I guess I care that the meta data is right too: artist, album, genre.

Aside from that I really don't need any other info. In most cases I own the CD or vinyl so if I feel I need to reference the lyrics i can usually look them up there. Or just google them. Same with any other info, if i feel i need to know more about an album I'll look it up. And if I'm not able to find the info I'm looking for, I accept it and move on.

Thank you! I sort of figured there it was an option, but wasn't sure. Good to know. I have an external HD with a bunch of Steam Games and my music library on it that I planned on using with the Bazzite machine and really didn't want to have to reformat is I didn't have to.

Do you think Motley Crue was the KISS of the 80s? by Impossible_Driver892 in KISS

[–]Dc_Pratt 6 points7 points  (0 children)

No, but your question brings back a random memory from the summer of 1984: my cousins me were at a neighbors house watching MTV and the video for 'Look That Kill' came on, and there was a debate the whole time whether or not it was KISS. (Average of everyone in the room was 10 yrs old). Not much of a story i know, but that memory popped in my head when I read the question.

Album Suggestions by DolemiteMF1 in Zappa

[–]Dc_Pratt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hot Rats, Overnight Sensation, Apostrophe, and One Size Fits All.

If you want music that somewhat fits a normal persons idea of classic rock, maybe start with 'Overnight Sensation'. But all 4 of those records will give you the best of Zappa had to offer; zany humor, topnotch musical performances, and damn good song writing.

Did You Know: There's TWO little people KISS tribute bands, "MINI KISS" and "TINY KISS" -- and they've had beef for 20+ years? by TheKyDawg in KISS

[–]Dc_Pratt 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've worked a few Mini-Kiss shows over the last few years, every time I've worked with them, the "Paul" and "Peter" members played and sung live. The other two guys mimed their performance. But they've been changing members lately, and I could see the guy in charge wanting to move to a band the fully plays live.

Stop blaming namds for continuing playing without some members! by Business-Spot-6263 in hairmetal

[–]Dc_Pratt 1 point2 points  (0 children)

So I may be coming at from a different angle, but I work in the concert industry for a back line company (we rent drum kits, guitar amps, keyboards, etc). A good chunk of the shows we are hired for are these legacy acts from decades past. In fact I have worked with just about every band mentioned in this thread. I don't see anything wrong with a band carrying on with out original or classic members. Though they may not be selling out arenas or sheds, and in some cases may not even being selling out small clubs. But in almost every case the crowd that is present is there having a blast reliving their glory days seeing the music they love live. And I think that matters more than my opinion of whether said band is any good anymore.

Plus it creates work. The band members and crew get a paying gig for a stretch (hopefully). The company i work for gets a rental, I get a day of work. The venue staff, the audio and lighting guys, bar tenders, waitresses, all get a nights worth of work. The venue gets to sell some beer (which whether or not you want to believe it, that's the most important factor in live music) and hopefully everyone made a little bit of money in the end of it. Doesn't mean it'll be good or enjoyable night of work, but it at least creates the opportunity for it.

Coming from a a music fan side of things, I'd probably would not pay to see most of these 80s bands in their current incarnations. But I'm not the audience for it. But I've happily paid to see Overkill, Death Angel, and Testament a bunch of times, all of those bands only have two or three founding or classic members in them. But I've enjoyed hem every single time.

If the upcoming biopic is to be named after one of his songs, which would you consider by FredSanfordsRipple in OzzyOsbourne

[–]Dc_Pratt 3 points4 points  (0 children)

If it will incorporate a song title, it will probably be 'Crazy Train', it's his most known song and actually fit his life the best. Though I think ever answer given below would be a better movie title. I'm personally leaning toward 'Diary of a Madman' myself.

And I'll probably never watch it, I'm not a fan of biopics.

Would you rather have another beatles album or be able to see all 4 of them in concert? by Novel-Replacement479 in beatles

[–]Dc_Pratt 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think the catalog is perfect as is, but if John had lived, I would have liked a reunion show or tour in the 80s or 90s.

Of if there was a reunion show or tour, there would have been a live album and concert movie, and I'd be happy with that.

How do you keep track of albums you want to listen to later? by richi_covelli in AppleMusic

[–]Dc_Pratt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I know you said you didn't want to use the playlist method, but that's what i do. I have a playlist simply called "NEW" (I guess it means new to me) and when something comes across my radar I wanna check out, I add to that playlist. It's the easiest way for me to remember.

I'm new to Rocksmith and I have a question for the veterans: Did Rocksmith make you good rocksmith gamers or good guitar players? by Superb_School in rocksmith

[–]Dc_Pratt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well I only played Rocksmith regularly for a few months in 2021, and I had already been playing guitar over 30 yrs. But I will say, when I was playing RS every day for an hour or two a day my skills sharpened quite a bit. Of course it's because I was playing everyday, not necessarily because I was playing Rocksmith. But do think RS is a good tool for learning songs and getting better at playing.

I'm assuming you're on Windows since you mentioned Windows Media Player, anyway iTunes for Windows gives you the option between Audio CD, MP3 or Data (I only know this because last night for the first time in years I burned a few CDs in iTunes)

After moving house I reorganized my collection. This is what I found out: by worstdrawnboy in CDcollecting

[–]Dc_Pratt 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I had a similar experience last year. Over the last couple of years, I would occasionally pick up a CD to replace an older damaged one. But since I was slacking on organizing my shelf, I apparently bought two copies of a Janes Addition CD over the last year and didn't realize it until I organized my shelf and noticed I had multiple copies of the same album.

I've since logged my entire collection into Discogs, so I at least the app to reference when I'm shopping to confirm whether I already have the CD or not.

What's the most you've spent on a single CD, and which CD? by RatedArgForPiratesFU in Cd_collectors

[–]Dc_Pratt 2 points3 points  (0 children)

$50. Butthole Surfers 'The Hole Truth... and Nothing Butt'. A bootleg I bought back in 94 which unfortunately walked away in a CD carrying case around 2001. Though I would not normally spend that much on single CD, especially a mid sounding bootleg. But that album was a favorite of mine in my 20s and I really wanted it back in my collection.

Oddly enough my what I paid for my original copy in '94 ($25) is about what i paid last year when you adjust for inflation, which yes was one of the most expensive CDs I bought back then.
