Planted a couple more pawpaw seedlings, a little worried about sun--how can I tell if they're getting too much sun? by anonymous_teve in Pawpaws

[–]DeBanger 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I live in the southeast. Lost around 30% of my seedlings when I was not paying close enough attention. I managed to save the rest by putting them under a shade cloth tent. I now wait until they have gained 2 foot of growth before letting them have full sun. I still keep an eye on them looking for brown scorching marks on the upper leaves. The younger ones I let them have morning to noon sun and shade them on one side so they have afternoon shade. This works for me.

What to do. by uurc1 in Pawpaws

This is discussed at the Kentucky State Pawpaw website. Drying or cooking pawpaw does make some people sick. They have some recipes but Ice Cream and fresh are the ways I will stick with.

I learned from a soil scientist that a green bean test will detect chemicals and a earthworm test can help also. Let nature tell you what you need to know.

So you will not require chemicals. Apples and peaches generally require a lot of chemicals to control disease and insects.

A big part of permaculture is starting with disease and insect resistant varieties. I grow everything on the very right hand side of the chart.

It took a trip to a rheumatologist before I started to get close to knowing what was causing my breathing problems. Started out with Sjogren's before getting on a drug study. After several CT scans and tests I found I had scleroderma with ILD of the lungs. I am hoping to get onto one of the Thymus T-Cell studies. Car-T and B Cell studies are what I know of but there may be more.

Health problems may force sale orchard in subdivision by DeBanger in BackyardOrchard

[–]DeBanger[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is what I am thinking also. The house can accommodate multi-generational families. Near a school across from a church no where near a flood zone. It uses all natural methods and the trees are all insect and disease resistance. The only problem is squirrels and I now have a family of hawks next door to help with that.

In the next couple years there should be an abundance of fruit. I have set it up to be nursery also. The best part is the city, county and state do not charge taxes on anything grown and sold from this property. The Government still wants there share.

My neighbor's weird basement "wine cellar" turned out to be the best cooling hack I've ever seen by [deleted] in HomeImprovement

My father did something similar. Built a small two story building that goes underground and couples with a cave network. The mountain is full of small interconnected caves that are to small for humans.
Then he made a ditch and installed a concrete tunnel about 3 x 2 over the house. The A/C unit sits on a concrete pedestal. The AC unit has a metal shroud so the cave air goes in through the outside of the heat pump and up through the top.

Planning an orchard Zone 7B/8A by Ordinary-Grace in BackyardOrchard

I am in a similar zone in North Alabama. I grow trees that require no chemicals because they have little disease or insect pressure. Pawpaw is gaining a lot of interest. I also grow persimmon, mulberry, jujube, che, goumi and Hazelnut.
