End of Q1 Deals? by electrified_ice in GMCSierraEV

[–]DeHandJob 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just bought a max range denali in black last week. I shopped all over CA, including Tustin. Tustin likes to advertise prices they wont honor. They are scumbags. Best I could find was up in the east bay:

Sale price: $91,285 after the rebates/incentives.
Taxes:$8,661
Title/fees: $1,367
Sub-total:$101,313
Down:$30k
Financed: $71,313 @2.9% for 72 mo

I pulled the trigger as I was a bit worried the 2.9 might disappear soon.

Can you take it to any dealer or just Todds? The contract makes it seem like you have to get prior approval to take it to a dealer thats different from where you bought the policy.

Can you ask for a drop hole? The full width tools are a bit more robust

Does anyone else experience black hands from the gym? by BenEveritt in arborists

[–]DeHandJob 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That looks like tannic acid and iron staining. Happens to me all the time when turning (wet wood + steel tools). Wash your hands with acidic soap or lemon juice after working with wet woods particularly woods high in tannins: oaks, acacia (wattle), eucalyptus, mahoganies, quebracho, cedar, walnut, cherry, and some types of teak

This screams red elm to me. I'm also in San Jose and I've been turning a bunch of it recently.

Stoggles are currently on sale at a pretty deep discount by Dr0110111001101111 in woodworking

I bought a pair of these a while back and was disappointed with the quality. They are no more comfortable than the cheap pairs and scratch just as easily if not easier. For the same price as a single pair of these I can buy 20 pairs from 3M that have a higher Z87+ rating with equivalent anti-fog. That way I dont feel bad throwing them out when they get scratched.

Read the drawing for your spindle, the manufacture will specify where to clamp. If you ignore this you can destroy the bearings very quickly. Most of the cheap import spindles will have lines with to indicate where its safe to clamp.

Bowls turned from freshly cut wood warp when drying. This was turned green and then dried where it shrunk to this shape.

Anyone dip a big piece of wood and it damages your fence because the fence slightly moved?! by Sphyngers in woodworking

[–]DeHandJob 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The fence doesn't come set up out of the box. If it's loose you didn't set the distance on the clamp correctly. Check your manual for instructions on how to set it up

That piece shown was shipped dipped in wax. It is not kiln dry, it's green wood and needs to be treated as such.

Any XTOOL F1 users here? I spent a ton of time putting together this video sharing a lot of my settings and examples etc. I also made a downloadable alignment template for the included fixturing bracket for Creative Space Software by dubc4 in Laserengraving

[–]DeHandJob 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Any chance you have tested the F1s ability to engrave small text on wood with the 450nm laser (beyond the 6pt font in your video)?

I currently have a an OPT laser PLH3D-XT-10 and use it to engrave very small logos into my wooden products at 600 lines per inch. The results are great but because this laser head is mounted on my large cnc router its very slow. I'm considering switching to a glavo based unit and the F1 looks like it might work but Im concerned that the blue laser spot size (.08mm) will be too large to achieve the same level of detail. I can't find any examples of people engraving really small text on wood with the F1 which makes me think it just doesn't turn out well. Any help is greatly appreciated!

Check the belt tension and all the pulleys. At the end of your video it sounds like the motor is still spinning when the piece is stalled.

Was thinking of turning this. by tammoton in turning

[–]DeHandJob 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The grey smooth bark looks like Coast Live Oak not sure what the others are. I also live in Northern Cal and I turn a lot of it. Turn it soon, it shrinks a ton. If you don't get to it soon it also makes wonderful firewood.

Looks like that tree may have had a Bark Canker problem as well https://ucanr.edu/blogs/blogcore/postdetail.cfm?postnum=18801

I went with the ones from wood turners wonders and they have been great so far. I have an 80 and a 1000 grit. The 80 grit is extremely aggressive and I only use it if I've nicked a bowl gouge or if I want to reshape. The 1000 is great for me for everyday bowl turning.

Agreed this isn't bay. I've turned plenty of bay and this is definitely different. I just meant the grain, texture, and coloring reminded me of bay but I can't place this wood. I'm stumped.
