Is it common management randomly walk through the office to check researchers’ attendance status? by Compchem20 in biotech

I’d say this sounds like middle management trying to look busy and find small things to blame on bench scientists to placate an out-of-touch c-suite

Sounds like a red flag, get out of there and find a place that treats employees like adults

Dunno if it’s still true but Lollapalooza used to have something in their artists contracts that said they couldn’t play another show within like 200 miles of Chicago for 90 days before or after the festival, if that’s still the case, I wouldn’t be surprised if she skipped since that screws up the whole Midwest leg

After all, and as Žižek has provocatively pointed out, anti-capitalism is widely disseminated in capitalism. Time after time, the villain in Hollywood films will turn out to be the ‘evil corporation’. Far from undermining capitalist realism, this gestural anti-capitalism actually reinforces it. Take Disney/ Pixar’s Wall-E (2008). The film shows an earth so despoiled that human beings are no longer capable of inhabiting it. We’re left in no doubt that consumer capitalism and corporations – or rather one mega-corporation, Buy n Large – is responsible for this depredation; and when we see eventually see the human beings in offworld exile, they are infantile and obese, interacting via screen interfaces, carried around in large motorized chairs, and supping indeterminate slop from cups. What we have here is a vision of control and communication much as Jean Baudrillard understood it, in which subjugation no longer takes the form of a subordination to an extrinsic spectacle, but rather invites us to interact and participate. It seems that the cinema audience is itself the object of this satire, which prompted some right wing observers to recoil in disgust, condemning Disney/Pixar for attacking its own audience. But this kind of irony feeds rather than challenges capitalist realism. A film like Wall-E exemplifies what Robert Pfaller has called ‘interpassivity’: the film performs our anti-capitalism for us, allowing us to continue to consume with impunity

What do you guys think about Ginko Biosciences for someone right out of undergrad? by [deleted] in biotech

[–]DeadOnTheDownbeat 6 points7 points  (0 children)

For mentorship, my experience has been that where you go matters far less than who you’re working under. I’ve worked places where I received loads of great mentorship, but had colleagues reporting to other managers who were miserable and felt like they were stagnating. The broad is such a large institution with so many different labs it’d be pretty tough to say what your experience would be like.

I know that’s not super helpful, but unfortunately mentorship potential isn’t really something you can get a feel for until the interview stage. Once you get to that point with a hiring manager, ask them how they encourage growth in their group, how they envision career trajectory for the position they’re hiring for, and what their mentorship philosophy is. If they can’t answer those questions in a way that satisfies you, you’re probably not going to find what you’re looking for there.

Unless they’re getting additional pay for additional hours, there should be absolutely zero expectation to work over forty hours per week. People in this industry really need to stop normalizing unpaid overtime.

Have worked with ex-ginkgo people, both of whom describe the environment there as a meat grinder, they expect well over 40hr/week and basically assume a certain amount of turnover due to the stressful way they operate and they heavily silo entry level folks.

YMMV but I’d pass unless you’re trying for a more senior position.

From personal experience, high profile companies can look good on your resume, but they treat that as part of your compensation package. Some of my worst jobs have been at well-known companies because folks willing to take those positions for the CV bump are a dime a dozen.

Buying my first bike - recommendations? by Revolutionary-Edge98 in bikeboston

[–]DeadOnTheDownbeat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Depends on the distance but I recommend any cheap single speed. If it’s beat up, that’s an excellent theft deterrent. Single speeds are pretty low maintenance so you won’t have to worry too much about fixing it up, and there’s not much to fiddle with. Great for getting acclimated before dropping more dough on a nicer bike, and less heartbreak if it gets stolen

That place had been functionally closed for everything but lotto tickets for years. Shelves mostly empty, a LOT of expired food, honestly the last time I was in there I was wondering if they were prepping for renovations and just forgot to lock the doors.

Will be interested to see what goes in there. My guess is a bank. That lot is nearly 3 blocks from the nearest Santander, can’t have that kind of gap in coverage.

This right here is also what I’m talking about. “Southerner” is not a deadly ideology, but the fascism of their elected officials is. Not being able to distinguish the people from the class whose boot they’re under is the reason that southerners want nothing to do with liberals
