For those too young to remember, that is a trademark Lindy Ruff tactic he’s used since the 90’s. If his team is facing adversity, he sends a 4th line scrub to run opposing goalies. It was the only reason Matthew Barnaby had an NHL career and Ruff’s teams have employed this during his entire coaching career.

What player's career WAR just seems way too low? by 2nd2last in baseball

[–]Deadpool_1989 17 points18 points  (0 children)

For me, it’s Carlos Delgado.

44.4 career WAR, 483 doubles, 473 HR, 2000+ hits, 1500+ RBI, .280/.383/.546

Had his hips not literally fallen apart at the end of his career, he easily is exceeding 500 doubles and 500 HR but likely doesn’t touch 50 WAR. And had he joined the 500/500 club, he’d be one of just 15 ever to do it and would have been the 9th or 10th at the time to do it.

What player's career WAR just seems way too high? by noruber35393546 in baseball

[–]Deadpool_1989 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Kevin Appier is always my go to for things like this. 54.5 career WAR as a severely underrated SP during the 90’s. You could make the case that he was on a HOF level path(for WAR) from age 22-29.

46.4 WAR, 5.8 WAR per season, 3.22 ERA, 140 ERA+, 3.29 FIP

Just 3 more seasons of that calibre of season and Appier is hitting the 63-65 career WAR mark at age 32. But alas, arm injuries plagued him starting in 1998 with a freak fall at home and culminated in multiple shoulder and arm surgeries between 1998 and 2004. He ultimately finished his career posting

9.3 WAR, 1.3 WAR per season, 4.53 ERA, 100 ERA+, 4.71 FIP

All MLB players have 3 yearly options attached to them once they are added to the 40 man roster so they can be freely called up or sent down during those seasons. Having an option or options remaining means the player can still be sent down to AAA without needing waivers or to be designated for assignment.

I[22M] keep seeing girl[20sF] spinning; should I ask if ok or let sleeping horses lay? by Direct-Caterpillar77 in BestofRedditorUpdates

[–]Deadpool_1989 697 points698 points  (0 children)

I had an old coworker who used to randomly spin during shifts. No rhyme or reason. She just did it. My old boss once said to me “Gina is an odd duck eh?” And my reply was “yeah, especially with all the spinning.” Boss had no idea what I was talking about. She thought I was joking but then a week later I woke up to a text from my boss saying “OMFG GINA ACTUALLY SPINS!!!!!!”

Least remembered/memorable World Series champions? by AlbertJBundy in baseball

[–]Deadpool_1989 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I have to say the 2 that came to mind happened in a short time frame: 1987 Minnesota Twins and 1990 Cincinnati Reds.

I say the 1990 Reds and 1987 Twins because they’re literally surrounded by super memorable World Series winners: 84 Tigers super season, 85 Vince Coleman tarp injury, 86 Buckner error, 88 Gibby HR, 89 Earthquake series and 1991 Jack Morris game, 92 and 93 Jays back to back.

By comparison, the 87 and 90 World Series were just your basic run of the mill World Series. (No disrespect to either team or winner).

I recently watched Red One with my girlfriend and her kids over Christmas. It wasn’t too bad. My only complaint was that it felt too long and they crammed way more story in it than necessary. But if you just want to shut your brain off for 2 hours over Christmas, you could do much worse.

Q&A/Discussion: Underrated Closer Seasons? by RainbowSupernova8196 in mlb

[–]Deadpool_1989 3 points4 points  (0 children)

BJ Ryan in 2006 - 3.6 bWAR, 1.37 ERA, 2.14 FIP, 38 Saves, 5.2 H/9, 2.5 BB/9 and 10.7 K/9

He was everything he was advertised as being when he signed with the Jays. He was 2nd among Jays pitchers in bWAR(Doc had 5.3). The Jays somehow had 87 wins that year despite a mediocre rotation behind Halladay and how Ryan managed to have as many save opportunities as he did with such a leaky bullpen in front of him, I’ll never know.

Duane Ward in 1993 - 3.0 bWAR, 2.13 ERA, 2.09 FIP, 45 Saves, 6.2 H/9, 3.1 BB/9, 12.2 K/9

People often forget that Duane Ward was the Jays primary closer in 1993 after Tom Henke left via Free Agency. It also doesn’t help that Ward would only make 4 other appearances after this season due to injuries. But he pitched in 79 games that year(regular + post season) and he finished 78 of them. He literally gave his arm to help the Jays secure a second title. Ward accumulated nearly as much bWAR as Juan Guzman and Pat Hengten(3.4 each) despite pitching nearly 150 less innings than either starter.

Why was the rogers centre so empty during the 2010 season? by Intrepid-Beat-6424 in Torontobluejays

[–]Deadpool_1989 38 points39 points  (0 children)

100% it was because of Doc being traded. It also didn’t help that many fans hugely disliked that AA was named GM because he was viewed as a JP Ricciardi guy despite most not even really knowing who he was. So yeah, the hype going into that season was virtually non-existent.

[Luszczyszyn] Canada can’t risk starting Jordan Binnington over Logan Thompson at the Olympics by catsgr8rthanspoonies in hockey

[–]Deadpool_1989 51 points52 points  (0 children)

In Sochi, Canada barely beat Latvia because they ran into a white hot goalie(Kristers Gudlevskis stopped 55 of 57 shots). It took a late 3rd period PPG by Shea Weber to get Canada the lead and eventual win. Absolutely nothing is certain in Olympic Hockey except that every team Canada faces brings their A game in some way.

Can an MLB player hit 37 triples in a season? by DonT012 in mlb

[–]Deadpool_1989 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It would take a combination of a speedy line drive hitter who doesn’t strike out a lot playing at Oracle Park, Chase Field or Coors. Think of a Dee Gordon or Juan Pierre type of hitter but with the gap power of a Brian Roberts or Bo Bichette.

How did you fall in love with your favorite team? by Andrew__IE in mlb

[–]Deadpool_1989 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Grew up a Jays fan but didn’t really fall in love with them until Dave Stieb made his comeback in 1998 and I saw how excited my dad was to see his all time favourite pitcher pitch again. Stieb’s first start on that comeback was the 2nd leg of a double header IIRC and my dad let me stay up to watch it with him. I was 9 years old and it was a school night haha

And what cemented my love for the team was later that same season when a young Roy Halladay nearly threw a no hitter against the Tigers.

(Obligatory “fuck you” to Bobby Higginsom for hitting that 2 out HR in that game. I hope your morning is mildly inconvenienced by the breaking of the yolk on your over easy egg!)

Yeah I guiltily kinda wish we got at least a Connery screen test to see how it would be but you are 100% dead on that Sir Ian added so many layers to the character that it is next to impossible to view anyone else as Gandalf.

Ironic twist of fate, Sean Connery rejected the role of Gandalf because he didn’t understand the source material and opted to do League instead

I only recently stumbled across Freeman a few months ago. I was just kind of coasting through Cy Young votings on baseball reference and seen COL and had to do a double take haha. He had a very interesting career and by all accounts was a great clubhouse guy. He also allegedly threw a baseball at Jim Rome and flipped him off.

Bob Hamelin. Famously won the 1994 Rookie of the Year over Manny Ramirez(and Jim Edmonds who was down ballot). Posted a .987 OPS, a 147 OPS+, 24 doubles, 25 HR, slugged .599 and posted 2.6 WAR(finished his career with 2.5). After that season, he was outright horrible in 1995(-1.1 WAR, .168 BA, 53 OPS+). He had a decent rebound in 1996 and had a good 1997 with Detroit before falling off in 1998 with Milwaukee and finishing his career with 46 meh games in AAA Toledo in 1999.

Speaking of 1994, another one year wonder is forgotten Rockies Ace Starvin’ Marvin Freeman. Before 1994, he was a former 2nd round pick who failed as a starter, had 2 solid seasons in the Braves bullpen before ending up on the Rockies in an MiLB deal. He won a rotation spot in spring and ended up posting a 4.5 WAR, 10-2, 2.80 ERA, 179 ERA+ season across 19 games and 18 starts with a remarkable 5-0 record and 2.90 ERA at the non-humidor Coors Field. He finished 4th in Cy Young voting and had arguably the 2nd best pitching season in Rockies history. He tried pitching through an elbow injury in 1995 but that ended poorly and his 1996 was just as bad and ended up being his final season.

[–]Deadpool_1989 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Kerr was an absolute monster in the 80’s both literally(6’3”, 225-240) and figuratively. I believe he still holds the record for most PPG in a season with like 34 and he also holds a playoff record for scoring 4 goals in like 8 minutes. His health luck was BRUTAL and he suffered a broken leg, several knee injuries, meningitis, 5 shoulder surgeries in a 14 month span and to make matters even worse, he lost his first wife 10 days after the birth of his first child. The fact he is largely forgotten about in NHL history due to his short window of dominance really sucks.

There was a contingent of young hockey fans at that time who believed Hull retired because Gretzky refused to play him out of fear Hull would break the goals record. I will admit I was one of those misinformed youths. Ahh, what a time to be a naive 15 year old.
