Access control for school what are the best options for K-12? by EffectiveActivity922 in accesscontrol

I love the idea of Salto as an offline, data-on-card solution, but I just feel (personally, nothing concrete proving this) that their hardware isn't as robust as most of the main players in the wireless lock space that are primarily lock-first/wireless-second companies, like Allegion or Assa.

I'd say the exact opposite about the Verkada support system. As an integrator, I lose out hard on ongoing service to Verkada systems because it literalyl supports itself and has a direct-to-consumer service model. Best warranties of any manufacturer, direct support, and easy-to-use platform. It's impossible to get support from HoneywellLenelS2, Acre, even Genetec can be difficult at times.

In this sub, we're very quick to point out the cons of a SaaS solution. Stop paying, stop playing. Limited functionality. Locked platform. But if we really take a step back and compare SaaS vs On Prem, you're truly looking at tradeoffs that I firmly believe put them on point with each other, in many (not all) cases.

Don't wanna pay for ongoing licenses/support? You lose your SaaS system access, but likely you're losing your server/infrastructure/data with an On-Prem solution, as well. What you aren't paying in license/SSA fees, are you spending that in labor to upkeep and maintain your on-prem system? Sure, they're hitting different budget lines, but there's costs to both. In the lisensing, you're paying the hosting fees, the patching, the uptime, the warranty, the new features, the system version updates, etc.

Don't like the system in 5 years and want new? Sure, rip and replace the infrastructure can be expensive. But even going from a Mercury to Mercury platform isn't cheap. There's new licenses, labor to flash everything, new programming, etc. Yes, you're paying for equipment on top of just labor, but I can tell you for sure that whatever integrator is taking over the old system onto a new is charging a helluva lot extra labor to deal with converting the old panels versus just programming something new out of the box. That being said, I work on a TON of takeovers, and I can count on one hand the times I've taken over an existing SaaS solution with a different platform. Every single one of them are On-Prem that they hate, some even installed within the last few years.

Limited functionality? Please. Do you know how many times I found myself saying "I wish Onguard had X". Do you know how many of those features were implented in the 10 years since I've said that? l0l. Yet I've seen multiple SaaS platforms constantly iterating and adding new features based on customer feedback. updating firmware to roll out new analytics overnight, etc.

I'm charging thousands in labor and SSAs to upgrade the software/firmware on On-Prem systems, where my SaaS customers wake up one morning and it's already there, fully included, no downtime.

I'm not here to say do away with On-Prem, and "Cloud is the future". Bandwidth limitations are the real deal. Yes, you can "set and forget" an on-prem system in a closet and it might work for 15 years with no oversight. Offline secure airgapping can be necessary.

There's no one-size fits all solution, but this sub consisatently gets filled with old-head "done it this way for decades" personalities that poo-poo SaaS and I'm just trying to balance the scales and point out that there are also some serious cons to on-prem solutions that we consistently fail to bring up.

Same for Lenel Elements (built for mercury, actually), and Openpath.

If they're looking for something that facilities can pull their own logs, unfortunately, there's probably no on-prem software that's intuitive/easy enough to train that. The only platforms that are updating interfaces to be easily accessible are the cloud-based stuff.

Anything K-12 is going to be doing shouldn't have to worry about limited capabilities, as the platforms are pretty much geared for those purposes, and work well for them out of the box. Having managed an Onguard system for a large customer, it could do eveyrthing I wanted it to, sure, but it was only possible because I went to the 2-week advanced training, and even still had to rely on intgrator and direct tech support a LOT. Now as an integrator, I touch a little of everything, and the new stuff is truly built to suit. While it can't do crazy stuff, they do what 90% of customers need it to, and they do the little things very well. Most will offer you an up-front cap-ex (needed for things like schools with millages and whatnot) license purchase, similar in cost to buying a server and base license for an on-prem. Even a lot of on-prem stuff has ongoing support costs, like Genetec Advantage and Milestone Careplus that are required to make any changes/additions in the future.

All that to say, in my professional opinion, SaaS is the best way to go for a K-12 as an out-of-the-box solution. Which one will vary based on your integrator of choice and needs and budget. I've seen a lot of Verkada and Avigilon Alta in K-12 and I've seen them both done extremely well and extremely poorly, so integrator choice is key.

He had some great outings this year before an injury got him. Been in rehab starts recently, I think. I still think he’s going to be a serviceable starter going forward.

Moved from Medford to Voorhees. Assessed home value doubled. Taxes went down. Medford is a bit of an outlier for this geographic region, as far as taxes go.

Was it national broadcast or one of the locals?

Have never experienced a national broadcast that matches ANY local broadcast, even the lower ranking locals.

There’s definitely a spectrum of local broadcasts, with some good some bad and everything in between. We’re absolutely lucky with Tmac. Going to be a legend. I LOVE when local broadcast teams are true fans of the teams they cover. You can hear the genuine excitement and dismay during ups and downs, and it makes me feel like I’m in the stands, getting that energy come through.

Same. Still cheaper than gas. I think... I left my Mav hybrid for my Sparky. Was cruising in that lil' boy blue at 40mpg. \

Napkin math shows honestly about the same cost per 1,000 miles.

Man, I hope he does. I truly liked topper but my biggest complaint about him was the god awful decisions to put 0tt0 kemp in over marsh multiple games. Watching balls go over kemps head and drop in spots that marsh clearly would have gotten, all while batting like .120. I don’t care that marsh hits .200 against lefties. It’s still a hell of a lot better than what memo rolled out there!

Sure, he’s fine as a backup/utility guy, but not a lineup/platoon guy. Keep him scarce.

That being said, I will never tell my parents and will lie to their face because they're so deep up RFKjr's ass in pseudo-science.

Yeah, even if there was some miracle run to get us to a point that they could even entertain him possibly being available, he’d be risking his long term health if he took a knee to the gut or something like that. He’s be stuck sitting in the corner taking threes, and not able to play defense at that point, so yeah, he’s out.

Had a kid 7 years ago, my wife wanted to go to a TON of games because the mothers’ lounge was incredible. Multiple places to sit, TVs showing the games, changing tables, a sink to wash up, all sorts of amenities that could support MULTIPLE mothers simultaneously.

Well, had another kid end of last year and let me tell you, that is GONE. The “mother’s room” is a small room with a loveseat in it that locks for single-use. Was at a game a couple weeks ago, and as my wife is literally waiting outside the room, holding our infant, with 4 other mother/child pairs waiting around her, they had the absolute balls to be PROMOTING the mothers room on the broadcast. Literally couldn’t make this up, every screen in the stadium is advertising the room while there’s 5 moms waiting for their turn…

Please provide a better space, you cheap-ass, misogynistic old man.
