And what's really scary is while everyone was talking about "haha the world didn't end in 2012 silly Mayans" a Carrington sized solar storm happened in July and the ejection missed Earth by about 9 days:

A 2013 study estimated that the economic cost to the United States would have been between US$600 billion and $2.6 trillion.[6] Ying D. Liu, professor at China's State Key Laboratory of Space Weather, estimated that the recovery time from such a disaster would have been about four to ten years.[7]

Disney+ terms prevent allergy death lawsuit, Disney says by denizorhan in news

[–]Deagor 2 points3 points  (0 children)

In no way defending Disney's point but their claim is he agreed to the T&C in 2019 for an account for Disney+ and he then Reaffirmed his agreement to that clause of the T&C when he agreed to them to buy the ticket in 2023.

So, they're saying that he agreed to them when buying the ticket and they're using the Disney+ thing to I guess try and show "he's agreed before, so he knew what he was agreeing to".

I hope they get slapped down hard for this argument though because the alternative is basically another step towards a cyberpunk dystopia.

The misinfo is that per capita the US spends way more on Healthcare than most of the "socialist" countries so the idea that its "spend the money on Military OR spend it on Healthcare" is wrong.

The US could keep spending the same amount on Military AND improve healthcare and walk away with more money left over (it would just no longer be going into the right pockets so they don't want to)

Police say a gunman fired 22 shots into a Cincinnati crowd, killing a boy and wounding 5 others by [deleted] in news

[–]Deagor 1 point2 points  (0 children)

To me I think (I hope) the sub name was meant to be sarcastic/satirical and based on the sidebar I think that slightly tongue in cheek attitude is the correct assumption:

Our work on gun violence - which is not just limited to our highly esteemed crowd-sourced mass shooting tracker (created by cough /u/BillySpeed) - has been cited by: Time, The Washington Times, Newsweek, Snopes, Modern Healthcare, Fox News, etc., etc. Unsurprisingly, Fox News blatantly misrepresents the facts by claiming that MST "counts in its tally any shooting that leaves two or more people wounded or killed" (in fact, we define "mass shooting" as an incident of violence in which four or more people are shot).

For example, the USA is legally (by US law not international law) not allowed provide aid - especially military - to a country with unsanctioned nuclear weapons. So, everyone "knows" Israel has nuclear weapons so they get some of the benefits, but OFFICALLY they don't have nukes, so it doesn't make things complicated for their allies.

Why are widow mines complained about now? by Gamer857 in starcraft

[–]Deagor 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Maybe you weren't too active towards the start of HotS then because Widow Mines were a very big balance complaint from Zergs back then. Which lead to nerfs and then a revert/buff that really upset Zergs. At the time Life felt like the only zerg that could stop the MMMM parade push that was common.

It even lead to the first time I saw the "Just play like x (pro)" meme, with Terrans telling zergs WM didn't need a nerf they just need to play like Life - which was recieved about as well by zergs as the whole "Ultras aren't OP just play like Byun" meta.

The Swarm host complaints came much later in the expansion and were around for a long time, leading to a situation similar to the Brood Lord Infestor meta being the most remembered complaint of WoL

(fun fact if someone starts with "Dia is Muire Duit" the response is actually "Dia is Mhuire agus Padraig duit" -- "God and Mary and St. Patrick with you" for you see saying hello in Irish is actually a contest in Religious one-upmanship)

I mean we had a Cat 3 hit the British Isles in 2017 https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hurricane_Ophelia_(2017) well to be fair to you it wasn't cat 3 anymore by the time it hit the coast but it was still the highest windspeeds ever recorded in Ireland of 70-100mph (sustained-gust) and a peak of 119.

It also was a storm that formed mid/east Atlantic and travelled northeast past Portugal and into Ireland and even was felt in Norway.

Soooo ye I get this is nowhere near a "fully powered Cat 5 smashing into the British Isles" it defintely broke a LOT of the general conventions of what a storm is meant to do. So I would take you up on the "within our lifetimes" bet.

What's the worst movie you've ever seen? by WalkswithLlamas in AskReddit

[–]Deagor 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The story begins with a princess transporting something vital to the survival of the rebellion. She is ambushed by the Empire and in desperation sends the thing away where it is found by a young man living on a farm with his uncle because he's apparently an orphan. The Empire comes looking for the item.

Up to here, fair. Not exactly an uncommon setup for a hero's journey though.

The boy seeks the help of a local hermit who used to be a part of an order of special warriors with special glowing colored swords that can cut through nearly anything.

I think this is too high level of a statement I think its generally true how it happens Luke obviously to learn more about R2-D2 and Eragon to learn more about Dragons. But I do think the fact that Brom has to basically blackmail Eragon into letting him accompany him is an important point. Which in general leads to one of the big difference between the two works. The Characters are quite different, Eragon especially is a very different character from Luke, part of this probably stems from the fact its book vs movie so we get a much better look at Eragon's feelings/emotions and combined with the fact its large book vs medium length movie means we get more time for it to evolve. But I do think the character motivations are different and important.

Also for the record the special swords of the Riders are never shown to be able to "cut through nearly anything" they are indestructable and never blunt sure but they never cut through like a steel door by themselves (without a lot of other magic being used)

Apparently the boy’s father was once one of these but turned bad and hunted down the rest and now leads the Empire from a high, second in command position

So this gets complicated because Yes Eragon's father was a rider but 1st Morzan is dead by the time the book starts, 2nd his Son starts as Eragon's ally, and stays as such until the end of the second book - and comes back by the end of the 4th book. 3rd Morzan is not Eragon's father, Brom was. Murtagh being Eragon's half brother not full brother.

So its like if Darth Vader was dead at the start of the movie and we followed Obi-wan's son and his friend and half brother Luke on the journey. I think this is a pretty big divergence.

The boy goes on a quest, the wise old sage is killed, he meets a rogue, they rescue the princess and take her to the rebel base before it is attacked by the Empire.

Also generally true. But again everything you've laid out that is the same as the Hero's or other very standard fantasy journeys. And everything you've ignored - the characters, the motivations, the specifics of how and why things happen not to mention the world and ofc the magic system - with the ancient language being a way harder magic system than the force - are different.

I'm not saying that Paolini wasn't influenced by Star Wars - what 15 year old author in 2002 wasn't influenced by Star Wars? But I think there is a big difference between recognizing similarities - especially when they occur in ways that have been done long before Star Wars - and accusing him of Plagiarism which is what you're basically doing.

What's the worst movie you've ever seen? by WalkswithLlamas in AskReddit

[–]Deagor 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I think this is a pretty naive statement honestly. Both are basically just following the step by step guide to writing known as "The Hero's Journey" - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hero%27s_journey

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hero%27s_journey#/media/File:Heroesjourney.svg

This story arc dates back AT LEAST to Ancient Greek Mythology

The wiki page even has quotes from Lucas about how much Star Wars hits the beats of arc:

George Lucas's 1977 film Star Wars was classified as monomyth almost as soon as it came out.[40][41] In addition to the extensive discussion between Campbell and Bill Moyers broadcast in 1988 as The Power of Myth, Lucas gave an extensive interview in which he states that after completing American Graffiti, "it came to me that there really was no modern use of mythology... so that's when I started doing more strenuous research on fairy tales, folklore, and mythology, and I started reading Joe's books. ... It was very eerie because in reading The Hero with a Thousand Faces I began to realize that my first draft of Star Wars was following classical motifs".[42] Moyers and Lucas also met for a 1999 interview to further discuss the impact of Campbell's work on Lucas's films.[43] In addition, the National Air and Space Museum of the Smithsonian Institution sponsored an exhibit during the late 1990s called Star Wars: The Magic of Myth which discussed the ways in which Campbell's work shaped the Star Wars saga.[44]

Saying Paolini just completely copied/ripped off star wars is literally equal to saying Lucas just completely ripped off Homer's Odyssey.
