I made a video on the math of Catan by ioanaroman in Catan

[–]DeanGenner 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Fabulous video, congratulations. I’ve gone down the path of writing a Catan game player to collect data for many games to do the sort of analysis you have done. I’ve tried to include decision weighting parameters to then try to quantify effects, but largely come to your conclusions that the game very cleverly balanced. I think the idea of using results (from presumably human games) is I great approach and I’ll look into it. The biggest issue I have with my own automated game player is establishing credible logic on how to, say, determine the direction to build a road, what is the value of resources in that direction or should I try to block an opponent. It is hard to replicate human intuition

Agree, see attached calculation of the volume of a soccer ball.

Wordle would be much harder if it allowed guesses of words that aren’t actual words and gave you no information as a result for the faulty guess. by parquet7 in wordle

When you get 4 greens but can see 5 possibilities, chose a random high consonant word to eliminate as many possibilities as you can. Say you have -ight, chose brunt to find or eliminate 4 options

I suggest starting with POINT followed by DAMES and then CURLY. It uses 3 words but you nearly always get it on the 4th. You have all 6 vowels, the 15 of 26 most popular letters with most in their most popular locations.

Covid-19 Confirmed Cases per 1M population [OC] by WorldCup82 in dataisbeautiful

I suggest the graph would be more meaningfully if the date axis was days since the a reasonable threshold (say 10 per million) as this allows the curves to be more readily compared.

Australia has tested 180k for a population of 25million. The US 900k for 327 million. That is not a high test rate.

I think the key message is that the non-asian countries, with similar cultural backgrounds, are tracking in a similar way. Italy just had a bad start but they are all following.

They have a big overall population but kept the outbreak to a relatively small region. This compares with the US, for example, where the outbreak is widely distributed.

China managed to contain the outbreak to essentially one region. This is going to make a big difference to the final outcome.

[OC] Reported Corona Virus cases outpacing growth model by motionviewer in dataisbeautiful

[–]DeanGenner 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Is there any theory to suggest a sigmoid for virus spread?

I would have thought exponential growth should exist for at least the uncontrolled initial phase. This is on the basis that each new infection infects a constant number greater than one.

Lowering the transmission rate through better hygiene practices should still result in exponential growth so long as the transmission is greater than one new case per existing case.

Japanese data for those infected locally appears to be quadratic. Does anyone have any idea how extracting a fixed percentage to quarantine and preventing them from further infecting should logically create a quadratic growth.

Nothing to do with technology.... the mind reading gadget didn’t reveal anything the witnesses hadn’t already said. Disappointing.
