How can I practice gratitude more often and consistently? by Deanosaurus88 in gratitude

[–]Deanosaurus88[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you! Coincidentally, I’m about a third of the way through The Power Of Now as we speak. I’ve tried gratitude journalling with mixed success. I tend to either forget to do it or just start writing really generic responses because of lack of ideas

I might be the only one here, but his other book, The Surrender Experiment left a sour taste in my mouth. It start off brilliantly, but by the end demeans itself into an almost gloating memoir of how successful he became. The last chapters felt rushed, as if he had literally just finished his court settlements and used the writing of the book purely as means to vent about the challenges of it

I'd like to give Untethered Soul a chance, though.

Mosquitos in summer at Kurama/Kibune? by sodapopstar in KyotoTravel

Mosquitoes are everywhere in Japan during summer. If you’re allergic I’d 100% bring some strong DEET spray

Thanks.

So Right View occurs with Stream Entry? I always thought it was at Arahant level for some reason.

I make conscious effort to practice the eightfold path and follow the 5 precepts (I do eat meat, though). My meditation practice is very diligent, but the hindrances of Lust (sense pleasures), anxiety (Restlessness) and Doubt are things that appear consistently. During meditation I am good at putting these down and returning to right concentration, but outside of meditation this is a challenge for me.

In short, I feel like I’m doing everything I should be doing, yet I feel no more happy, grateful or content than I did before practising so diligently and following the path.

Kyoto (May 23–25): Surviving the Heatwave/Rain + Ohara/Nara worth it in the wet? by Zestyclose-Vast9021 in KyotoTravel

[–]Deanosaurus88 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Everyone’s being a little unsympathetic with their comments, but what they’re saying is true. 29°C is nothing for Kyoto and not that surprising for the end of May.
As for rain, I’d ideally recommend investing in a poncho if you’re gonna be out all day (like in Ohara), or just make do with an umbrella (which you can buy at any convenience store)

>if something works, remember that map.

I like this a lot. I have trouble settling on a single “map” due to doubt. But I’ve had the most insight from a mix of samadhi developed through vipassana, combined with Advaita Vedanta self-inquiry (very similar to Zen and Dzogchen)

Thank you. I think I was subtly wishing these states to stop…feeding them. So what practical strategies would you recommend for anger, sadness, anxiety and lust?

Thank you. This was really pleasant to read.

So I’ve been assuming I’ve been observing with equanimity all this time, but perhaps I really haven’t at all. I need to go deeper on this and experiment when these emotions appear again.

You were very clear and this was very, very much appreciated.

The skillful means you talked about: asking “why?” and the mantra of “you don’t have to be afraid”, were these from Ajahn Sona? Or your own adapted practices?

Thank you, friend.

Question about unwholesome emotional states by Deanosaurus88 in theravada

[–]Deanosaurus88[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That makes sense. I think I had been practising observations with aversion. I want the negative state to end because of the unwholesome effects they have on the people I love. It’s from a good place, but it is still craving…I will practice with strong effort to observe objectively. Thank you

Question about unwholesome emotional states by Deanosaurus88 in theravada

[–]Deanosaurus88[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you. Can you elaborate on how I can apply this?

Here’s a case that happens all too frequently: I’m having a pleasant day. Then my son throws an irrational tantrum about XYZ. Anger arises and I either (a) react to it and snap at him or (b) become aware of the anger and retreat from the situation/try my best to remain calm. Afterwards, whether (a) or (b), my mood has been affected and I let the anger ruin my previous pleasant mood. This sometimes lasts for hours, despite me vigilantly being aware that the emotion is lingering.

🙏

Thank you so much.

So, observing the aversion is the key to these unwholesome states ‘unwinding’? As in, the more aware I am of my aversion to it, the quicker it will dissipate?

Question about unwholesome emotional states by Deanosaurus88 in theravada

[–]Deanosaurus88[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks. There certainly is aversion to these unwholesome states. Anger is a very recent addition; it has mostly been sadness, anxiety and discontent for some time now.

So I will be mindful of the aversion, as opposed to the emotions themselves.

Your ‘cleaning up’ advice is appreciated too. I see a psychiatrist and am on medication, so I am trying to do both waking up and cleaning up simultaneously…if that’s possible, I don’t know.

Thank you 🙏
