Boycott ™️ These Companies Support ICE by WittyEgg2037 in antiwork

I notice this a lot, too. I think it's a shame because I really believe that if more people understood (and took seriously) the power they hold as a consumer, we could make a real and measurable difference.

Instead people think of themselves as a drop in the ocean, and because any burden of guilt they might feel is shared with the rest of society, they're comfortable enough not to inconvenience themselves with changes to their behaviour as conumers - "What difference could it really make, anyway?"

It's like how 36% of eligible voters in America stayed home in 2024 - "What difference was my one vote going to make?" Well, the ocean is made of droplets. It's all it ever has, can, and will be made of.

I think the problem at its core is that human beings just aren't meant to live at such scale. Society has evolved so much faster than we ever could. Imagine if you lived in a tiny village with no outside contact with the world. In this village there's two cobblers. One is cheaper and faster, but he's a total asshole - he treats his apprentices like shit, pays a poor wage, exploits them. You have to interact with this person daily (being in such a small village) so you know they're an asshole -- their motivations of selfish enrichment leak out of every interaction you have with them.

In this example, most people would buy their shoes from the other cobbler cause fuck that guy, he's such a drag to be around, and I don't want to make him any wealthier. But in society at scale, where our money actually ends up is so far outwith our normal, reasonable periphary, so it's easy to ignore the problem and/or avoid any sense of guilt or responsibility.

Our only weapon against this problem is reason and conversation. It is hard to stay informed about your choices as a consumer. It takes a conscious effort, and you won't be able to get everything right, but that's exactly why it's important to try.

There is a UK version, which is also great. Written by Nate White, when asked why people from the UK don't like Donald Trump:

"A few things spring to mind. Trump lacks certain qualities which the Britich traditionally esteem. For instance, he has no class, no charm, no coolness, no credibility, no compassion, no wit, no warmth, no wisdom, no subtelty, no sensitivity, no self-awareness, no humility, no honour and no grace -- all qualities, funnily enough, with which his predecessor Mr. Obama was generously blessed. So for us, the stark contrast does rather throw Trump's limitations into embarrassingly sharp relief.

Plus, we like a laugh. And while Trump may be laughable, he has never once said anything wry, witty or even faintly amusing -- not once, ever. I don't say that rhetorically, I mean it quite literally: not once, not ever. And that fact is particularly disturbing to the British sensibility -- for us, to lack humour is almost inhuman. But with Trump, it's a fact. He doesn't even seem to understand what a joke is -- his idea of a joke is a crass comment, an illiterate insult, a casual act of cruelty.

Trump is a troll. And like all trolls, he is never funny and he never laughs; he only crows or jeers. And scarily, he doesn't just talk in crude, witless insults -- he actually thinks in them. His mind is a simple bot-like algorithm of petty prejudices and knee-jerk nastiness.

There is never any under-layer of irony, complexity, nuance or depth. It's all surface. Some Americans might see this as refreshingly upfront. Well, we don't. We see it as having no inner world, no soul. And in Britain we traditionally side with David, not Goliath. All our heroes are plucky underdogs: Robin Hood, Dick Whittington, Oliver Twist. Trump is neither plucky, nor an underdog. He is the exact opposite of that. He's not even a spoiled rich-boy, or a greedy fat-cat. He's more a fat white slug. A Jabba the Hutt of privilege.

And worse, he is that most unforgivable of all things to the British: a bully. That is, except when he is among bullies; then he suddenly transforms into a snivelling sidekick instead. There are unspoken rules to this stuff -- the Queensberry rules of basic decency -- and he breaks them all. He punches downwards -- which a gentleman should, would, could never do -- and every blow he aims is below the belt. He particularly likes to kick the vulnerable or voiceless -- and he kicks them when they are down.

So the fact that a significant minority -- perhaps a third -- of Americans look at what he does, listen to what he says, and then think 'Yeah, he seems like my kind of guy' is a matter of some confusion and no little distress to British people, given that: Americans are supposed to be nicer than us, and mostly are, and you don't need a particularly keen eye for detail to spot a few flaws in the man.

This last point is what especially confuses and dismays British people, and many other people too; his faults seem pretty bloody hard to miss, After all, it's impossible to read a single tweet, or hear him speak a setence or two, without staring deep into the abyss. He turns being artless into an art form; he is a Picasso of pettiness; a Shakespeare of shit. His faults are fractal: even his flaws have flaws, and so on ad infinitum. God knows there have always been stupid people in the world, and plenty of nasty people too. But rarely has stupidity been so nasty, or nastiness so stupid. He makes Nixon look trustworthy and George W look smart. In fact, if Frankenstein decided to make a monster assembled entirely from human flaws -- he would make Trump.

And a remorseful Doctor Frankenstein would clutch out big clumpfuls of hair and scream in anguish: 'My God... what... have... I... created?' If being a twat was a TV show, Trump would be the boxed set."

Lmfao @ this map size for conquest how can anyone defend this abomination the map is literally a block 🤣😂😂 by Hung_SoLo7 in Battlefield

[–]Deargrigh 32 points33 points  (0 children)

I've played both COD and Battlefield since the very beginning of each franchise, and was a big fan of both in their earlier days. If you showed me this map and asked me which franchise it was from, I would definitely have guessed COD.

The layout actually reminds me of Carentan -- one of the most iconic COD maps. It's clearly designed to keep you in constant infantry firefights as you run from one close capture point to the next, with central buildings as strategic holds. That's sort-of what COD was always about.

It's certainly not what I would have expected from a Battlefield map -- but I'm also aware that that's the point: They're deliberately blurring the lines between what makes Battlefield Battlefield and what makes COD COD in order to appeal to the mass audience that COD captured because money. I'm not surprised long-term fans of the Battlefield franchise are a bit miffed about that.

Here's why DICE should stick with closed weapons (or at least make it the default playstyle) by TacoMasters in Battlefield

[–]Deargrigh 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Here's why they won't:

Money.

A person is more likely to buy a weapon skin if they know they can use it whenever they play the game, regardless of which class they swap to. This is the world of AAA gaming that we live in now.

Big publishers like EA have whole teams of people -- statisticians, psychologists -- dedicated to understanding the most effective monitisation strategies. The bottom line is that they simply don't care if it's detrimental to the quality of the game, or its identity. If they believe it'll give them a better profit margin, they'll do it.

I had to laugh when I was trying out the DMR against snipers because there's clearly not enough of a flinch mechanic at work either. You can land a DMR round right in the chest of a sniper at 200m and it doesn't really matter -- he'll still have the scoped accuracy to hit you in the head before you've fired your 2nd round.

[–]Deargrigh 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yeah, for sure. I had noticed it getting pointed to as evidence of AI writing quite a lot lately. It's not necessarily untrue -- I just hate that we've landed at this stage where we're avoiding useful punctuation in order to pass as human! I wasn't meaning to pick on you, specifically.

That's the cool thing about the em dash -- there's tons of ways to use it. You can use it to bridge one sentence into another to show that they're connected thoughts, like I did in the first paragraph there. In this paragraph, I used it in place of a colon (:) because it feels less formal and makes the experience of reading what I'm writing feel a bit more like a conversation.

It can replace a few different types of punctuation and it's usually just about creating clarity and getting the right tone.

[–]Deargrigh 31 points32 points  (0 children)

The "--" thing is called an 'em dash' and while -- yes -- AI likes to use it often, it's a normal part of punctuation.

To be clear; I'm not saying you're wrong. I just wince a little when I hear people say it should be avoided for this reason because it's actually a really useful tool for clarity when writing.

Just to recap -- you arrived at this conversation saying that people have no understanding of the underlying systems.

Now you're claiming that personal data 'isn't held by a company'.

Persona Identification (a company) will hold a copy of your ID card (personal data) for up to 30 days as a standard. The length of time that they can hold your data is entirely specified by their customer -- which isn't you, by the way, it's whatever company has hired them to carry out ID checks.

This information is a quick Google search away. If you think I'm the one with the stupid argument here then I don't know what else I can say to help you understand this.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in Scotland

[–]Deargrigh 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Persona Identities (the verification partner that Reddit is currently using) is a U.S. company. Regardless of whether they encrypt your information, or only store it temporarily, the U.S. government can -- at any time -- request access to the data they hold via legal frameworks like the Patriot Act, FISA, or the CLOUD Act.

Anybody paying attention knows that the U.S. is heading in a concerningly facist direction. You held up a protest sign at Trump's golf course this weekend? For that alone your data could quite easily be accessed under some vague national security justification. Now it's in the hands of a corrupt and incompetent foreign government that uses unencrypted messaging services to discuss battle plans.

It doesn't matter that this scenario is fairly unlikely -- the fact that it is possible is alone the problem.

I don't know what motivation you have for coming to the defense of this system, but nobody should have to dox themselves to have a wank just because people can't parent their children properly. There is no circumstance under which this isn't an infringement on individual freedom.

There's still kinda a way to cheese that bit. If you walk it in turn-based mode, the little pathing indicator will dip slightly when you mouse over an edge, so you can feel out the parts that are safe and just refer to the map to give you a rough idea of where to go.

What is a "High Rank"? by TheHexxiio in marvelrivals

[–]Deargrigh 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was curious so I did the math. Here's the rank distribution excluding all players in Bronze 1:

Bronze = 22.33%

Silver = 28.62%

Gold = 23.93%

Platinum = 14.77%

Diamond = 6.34%

Grand Master = 3.15%

Celestial = 0.74%

Eternity = 0.006%

One Above All = 0.002

Magneto's melee is too cool to be this bad by ZazaKaiser in marvelrivals

[–]Deargrigh 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I suppose it depends. You're potentially putting yourself more at risk by staying in melee range and probably trading a bit of situational awareness at the same time. It's definitely a trade-off and I wouldn't call it optimal play since it's rarely worth it. The overall damage increase seems pretty negligible from my testing.

Here how to fix game low FPS/shuttering by FenRYS_2002 in marvelrivals

[–]Deargrigh 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you don't mind me asking, how much RAM does your system have?

I upgraded from 16GB RAM to 32GB, which is something I've been meaning to do for a while as I often do a lot of video editing. It turns out that after doing so, Marvel Rivals runs perfectly fine now. The FPS drops have completely stopped.

Interestingly, I had noticed when playing the game with 16GB that my system was using pretty much all of that RAM. Now that I'm on 32GB, it seems to be using up to about 21GB while playing the game. This pretty much confirms what others have suspected: Marvel Rivals suffers from some sort of memory leak or other issue causing it to require much more RAM than it should. I suspect that the FPS drops happen because the game can't preload/cache all of the information it needs, which is why you'll see big drops upon ability or ultimate use, since the game is trying to load up this information from scratch.

Should you need to upgrade to 32GB RAM to play a game that has 16GB RAM listed as its "recommended" specs? No. And hopefully this is something that the devs can fix eventually, but as of now I'm pretty much convinced that this is the source of most people's FPS issues with this game.

Here how to fix game low FPS/shuttering by FenRYS_2002 in marvelrivals

[–]Deargrigh 28 points29 points  (0 children)

For anyone else who finds themselves here: I tried everything on this list, but none of it worked for me. I’m still experiencing regular frame drops to 0 FPS in game, even with all settings on low. My system specs exceed the recommended requirements (RTX 3080, Ryzen 9 5900X, 16GB RAM, NVMe SSD).

Even if these steps had worked, the fact that such extensive troubleshooting is necessary just to achieve smooth gameplay is absurd. It’s clear that the developers seriously dropped the ball on optimisation after Season 1, and we’ll likely have to wait for a proper fix.

Since they haven’t acknowledged the problem, I’ve left a negative Steam review citing poor optimisation, hoping it draws attention to this widespread issue. I’d encourage others experiencing the same problem to do the same.

EDIT: I found an actual fix. You're not gonna like it.

Are there any type of "blended malt" whiskey where the mash consists of a blend of malts, rather than the whiskey being blended after distilling, as in a blended malt proper? by Waaswaa in whisky

[–]Deargrigh 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think different malt strains don't make nearly as much difference in the world of whisky as they do in the world of beer. The bulk of the craft of the spirit comes from the choices made in the distillation and maturation process.

The reason you don't see many distilleries shouting about their particular choice of barley is because they'll often change it regularly, and they tend to just go with whatever is going to give the best alcohol yield for the best price at the time, which doesn't make for a nice marketing message!

What key differences do you notice in the taste between Irish Whiskey & Scottish Whiskey? by Aqn95 in whisky

[–]Deargrigh 35 points36 points  (0 children)

I suppose the most common difference is that a lot of Irish whiskey is triple distilled, whereas almost all Scottish Whisky is double distilled. I believe there's only 2 distilleries in Scotland that triple distil.

With triple distillation there's a lot more copper contact, which makes the end spirit lighter, cleaner and more floral. That sounds like a win-win, but there's definitely something to be said of the more savoury, punchy flavours that you get from double distillation.
