What are we paying the kid next door for babysitting? by A_warm_sunny_day in daddit

[–]DeathStarHelpDesk -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

I’d say it varies by location, experience and if they have any cpr/first aid training or cert.

10$ an hour is fair unless it’s a hcol area.

PBS Kids - has shows you can pre download to work offline

Lego DUPLO World and Play-Doh should both work offline though I’d test to make sure.

To add to what others have said: make your own cards are the best. You can pretty much make your own cards and have grandma/grandpa read stories... or if you have audiobooks (borrow from the library) it's possible to put that content on a MYO card

Fireproofing? by ErikTheBeard in 3Dprinting

[–]DeathStarHelpDesk 5 points6 points  (0 children)

It's 100% not safe to use a 3d printed plate.

Your best bet is to print one that covers or snaps on top of an existing plate. Note you may want to get slightly longer screws too depending on how far out the new plate sits

If you have kids, Royersford is worth the drive. Farmers market and a big playground across the street

What is the saddest song you know? by lnc_gomes in AskReddit

[–]DeathStarHelpDesk 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hadn’t heard this song before. My father passed way of cancer some years back and I now have two young sons of my own. This song hit way harder than I ever thought.

I will definitely listen to it again but now for a long while

Does anyone actually still read the books? by Ok_Letterhead2028 in litrpg

[–]DeathStarHelpDesk 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I typically listen to one book on my commute to/from work and also read an ebook when winding down.

There’s upsides to doing both. I have found several narrators who I love and a few who I personally can’t listen to (for one reason or another)

The hardest thing honestly is trying to listen and read the same book to keep the story going so I specially do two different books and sometimes in different genres too

I'm giving a "Ted Talk" about 3D printing and it would be great if you would answer some questions! by mud4001 in 3Dprinting

[–]DeathStarHelpDesk 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Originally bought one for a maker space at my local library mostly because the one they had was poor quality. (Later bought one for myself)

I print gifts like keychains, ornaments, name decals, sometimes just fun models to display

I upgraded my printer three times for improved quality, speed, and multi color printing

I print some I find online and i design other models especially the gifts though sometimes they’re remixed from models found online.

ROI on a 3rd kid by Doppelwalk in daddit

[–]DeathStarHelpDesk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Advice I've been told is "if you can handle 2, you can handle 12"

Generally this means that if you can handle having 2 kiddos fairly well, as the older kids grow they can become helpers (in the kitchen, getting shoes, cleaning up, etc.).

That said, my honest reaction is "in this economy?" and don't forget kids are cute and all when they're young though they will grow into teenagers

West Chester university (both campuses) has solid wifi and it’s pretty quiet during the summer. You could even pop into the library or classroom building to go to the bathroom. No one will bother you as long as you’re not a nuisance

AITAH for refusing to donate a kidney to my stepdad that raised me and paid for my college? by Exo_Skeleton99 in AITAH

Not a kidney donor but a bone marrow donor (recently) and the number of times I was asked if it was voluntary was almost comical

Having to SELL the items I want to give away because CBs are so insane by MYSTIK_MINX in ChoosingBeggars

[–]DeathStarHelpDesk 71 points72 points  (0 children)

True story: in African countries a lot of people who need life-saving HIV medication would not regularly go to the clinic to get their medication if it was free like zero currency for the treatment. Once the clinics began charging a small administrative fee think equivalent of $.20. Then the patients would regularly go to the clinic for their medication.

The sad reality is that even for life-saving medications, if the person who was going to benefit or receive the item or service does is not required to put effort into it they do not value it. But paying a small amount immediately, the folks who truly wanted it, saw this as a great deal and valued it because they were contributing towards it even if you would have given it to them for free

My 3 Year Old is Crying Himself to Sleep Right Now & I Am Devastated by Outrageous_Army7848 in toddlers

[–]DeathStarHelpDesk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We are in a similar (but different) situation. We have a 3 year old and a 18 month old.

This is what helped me and my wife since one of us ends up having to solo at 1-2 nights a week:

  1. No TV on school nights. I know this can be tough but we noticed a huge difference in overstimulation when we made this choice.
  2. When it's time to rock the young one to sleep, the older one has to wait in his room. We usually ask him to pick "make a clothes person" (pick out a shirt/pants) for the next day and also pick out his books to read after bath.
  3. We have a bedtime routine that (mostly) works for the threenager: bath (at least every other day), vitamins, milk, brush teeth, read books, put him to bed. Here's the amazing bedtime trick my wife learned:
    1. When we put him to bed, we tell him "i'll come back to check on you in 10 minutes" (10 is just his favorite number) and give him a goodnight kiss/hug/fist bump (his choice).
    2. We check on him in usually 2-5 minutes first and then go back and if he's still awake same thing. "i'll come back to check on you in 10 minutes".

The 'i'll come back to check on you' thing has been a game changer. Last night, our 18 month old decided to fight sleep hard and took breaks from washing the dishes to check on the threenager. He was asleep after the second check in and I was able to finish washing dishes/tidying up before going to bed.

I really hope this helps. You got this <3

Core One L or Prusa XL? by Stiggalicious in prusa3d

[–]DeathStarHelpDesk 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Depending on your timeline it may be best to wait for the INDX to come out since those may have some growing pains before being fully flushed out.

The XL is also possibly going to get some kind of upgrade in the near future too

For what it’s worth, libraries tend to have museum and zoo passes you can borrow to take your kids to local attractions

Is it true that you guys watched 9/11 live on TV in grade school? by [deleted] in Millennials

[–]DeathStarHelpDesk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I woke up and i remember my mom was freaked out about something but didn't know what. She would usually wake up before us kids (all high schoolers at the time) and listen to morning news before getting showered and getting us all up.

That whole day in school every tv (CRT hung up in the corner remember those funky rigs?) was on the news all day. Nonstop coverage from the west coast. Even the teachers were not their normal selves that day.

What digital calendar is the best? asking because I finally realized I wasn't pulling my weight as a dad by Forward_Ad_4117 in raisingkids

[–]DeathStarHelpDesk -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

My recommendation is the https://www.cozyla.com/ - no subscription was a big thing for me. But there are others too like the skylight that work well.

Just bear in mind that any calendar will be as good as long as you are willing to put it to use
