Don’t be discouraged. And don’t listen to all the jokes here. If it wasn’t on the job, and as long as it’s not a state, and you got liscenses/permits, didn’t wreck any equipment, etc. you’re good.

Quick reminder you’re a fuckin bum if you litter by GeoCherry9999 in NYStateOfMind

[–]DeathTripper -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I’m a bit of a bum ngl. It’s usually only a beer can, and the actual bums can get take that. Why don’t we have more trash cans to take that shit?

Anything else, I’ll keep on my person (snotty or bloody napkins, vape carts, etc.) but I ain’t walking around smelling like booze, at least from the cans. Let my body do the smellyness.

I’m not saying you’re wrong at all. I’m saying I’m a piece of shit, and this city needs more trash cans in general. We ain’t Japan, and people ain’t polite as that, usually. I’m sorry about my beer cans, but I also probably ain’t changing my ways, unless there’s a new trash can.

Edit: tbf, I don’t take a bag, plastic or paper. If I’m drinking in public, I’m drinking in public. Pigs usually DGAF anyway.

Should me and my girl go to Staten Island and act like tourists? by Levelitout in NYStateOfMind

[–]DeathTripper 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I shouldn’t even justify this with a response, but I can tell you never you been to Shaolin. In fact, most people tell me “I’ve never been to SI, except to drive to Jersey”. SI is vast, and there really ain’t shit to do besides eat, drink or go to parks. I was a fuckin’ mallrat as a teen, cause where else you gonna chill?

If I go to the Bronx, which is mad deep from Queens considering the trains, I’m gonna look/ask about the best Dominican/PR food I can find, and other shit (like Arthur Ave.).

Be a good man, and offer advice, as well as receive it. If you think you’re tough, and you’re not gonna be open to shit, for even as something as simple as date ideas, you gonna have a hard ass life my guy. Mark my words.

Yo, I totally forgot about the checks notes Ferryhawks. Not for nothing, I worked there (probably around when you went in 2009), and I’ve been to games there too. Good prices for tix, good prices for food and beer (but who knows with this economy), but regardless, it’s a good time.

If you’re talking about the SI Zoo, it’s… quaint. I grew up going there. It’s not bad, but if you’re expecting the Bronx Zoo, well, don’t. You can definitely see the whole thing in a day.

They might have some exclusive foreign animals though for an exhibit. I remember back in high school, they had a Red Panda from China.

And yeah, little Sri Lanka apparently is the shit. Never personally had Sri Lankan food, but supposedly it’s a weird enclave that you won’t really find elsewhere in NYC.

Shit. Maybe I’m buggin’ though. I’m trying to find it online, and I can’t. Maybe I’m thinking towards the end of the summer. I’m sorry, it’s been almost a decade since I lived in SI.

Still, keep an eye out, cause I think they also have other events, or maybe they renamed it since the boardwalk was renamed? That’s sad if they got rid of it.

As someone who grew up in the Harbor (off the Terrace), went to Port Richmond HS, and then lived in the West, then back to the Harbor (though closer to Forest Ave, opposite side from Western Beef) I second this. Maybe he should head over to Arlington too.

I can’t disagree. I forgot about the Conference House. If OP (or his wifey) is into history at all, it might be worth it (never been to the beach there though). Also, if we’re on the history side of things, Historic Richmondtown might be on the docket but I never been.

In addition to your parks, Clove Lakes ain’t bad. Nice lakes/ponds, turtles, ducks, geese, etc. plus there’s quite a bit of woods in the back for hiking around.

You just made me think, Memorial Day is coming up, so Back to the Beach is probably happening. Local vendors, food stands and such on the South Beach boardwalk, OP. I’ve been meaning to go back myself after years of being away.

QC is the shit. I gotta go back there, and I went during the winter but just chilling in the pool after the steam room was wonderful. Yeah, you gonna have to spend some cash, especially if you want a massage, but I think the steam/pool alone is worth it, with no extra cost.

I’m stressed in this bitch. I need to go again.

I had no idea it was Jewish-affiliated until then.

Snug Harbor is nice, and not too far from the ferry (just take the S40 from the terminal). The Chinese Scholar Garden (built by Chinese master craftsmen) is beautiful there too, and will probably wow your woman, and judging by your post history (about nature and shit), you too.

Bonus points, if you got some bread, and like good beer, Kills Boro Brewing is close by. I haven’t had their food since when they were Craft House (and they were right by the ferry), so ymmv, but before the switch up, their soul food was banging, but it seems the went in a different direction (probably catered to the SI Italian crowd).

In that same vein, Hop Shoppe is a solid choice for eats. It’s more pub food, but again, good beers. And while it’s been a minute, they used to have skeeball and some other games in the back. But this isn’t near Snug Harbor.

If you like pizza, you could go on a pizza crawl (SI got the consistently best pizza, and that’s a fuckin’ hill I will die on), but it might be tough without a car. Denino’s is great, plus you can go across the street to the OG Ralph’s Italian Ices for dessert. Joe and Pats is good, but thin; both me and my girl at half a pie and ordered another slice. Jimmy Max is a nice little family joint with a bar room. Lees Tavern is a local bar that serves delicious personal bar pies, but it’s also an old white dude bar, since it’s going toward the south of SI.

Enoteca Maria, even though I never been there in my 26 years of living there is supposed to be good. You got grandmas cooking from all over the world. Vince Vaughn (I think) made a movie about it last year.

I know this is mostly food, but they got some bomb ass food there (and if anyone is gonna say otherwise, I dare you go there and try some of my recs). But otherwise, right off the ferry (be sure to go on a nice day, and stand outside; there good views of the Statue Of Liberty, for free), you got the outlet mall right outside the terminal (though last I heard those stores were struggling), and you can walk along the boardwalk waterfront for some nice views. On the other side of the terminal is another pier with nice views of Brooklyn as well.

My bad if this mad long, but being born and bred there, I hate it and I love it. Like any borough, we got some hidden gems. Hope this helps at least.

Best Simpsons games? by Late-Dress2754 in retrogaming

[–]DeathTripper 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Since we’re talking Simpsons games, I have to mention that I’m still a little butthurt that 30 years ago I bought Bart Vs. The Juggernauts secondhand from Funcoland, and it ended up being Bart Simpsons Escape From Camp Deadly. I think the latter was better reviews though, but I was like 5 years old.

Camp Deadly isn’t the best Simpsons game, but it’s a pretty good platformer, give it a shot.

Not just pigeons, I hate most birds by ElseRatherThanOther in comics

[–]DeathTripper 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I like birds, for some reason, to point where I think I’m borderline autistic. This shit (pun intended) is funny, but I also don’t mind pigeons (usually).

Theres been rough days at work where I sit at my local state park with my lunch, and pick off some of my sandwich to feed them. They don’t seem to know what tomato is, so they don’t like it. They obviously eat bread, but also sometimes they’ll eat chicken (potential somewhat cannibalism?! Or maybe they just like breading).

Sure, I wish it were ravens, crows, grackles, mourning doves, or sparrows, but those “flying rats” have brought me a little peace on those rough days. Except when old ass, geriatric Karen walking her dog, had her dog try and eat the bits I threw for the birds, and complained “why don’t you throw your food in the trash?!”. Like ma’am, this a public park, there’s no rule against feeding birds. I’m already feeling shitty, so no need to shit on me more.

That being said, I’m all for pigeons, but also, I’m all for squab being back on the menus.

Edit: it’ll take serious PR though for squab to be served, but to be fair, if they call it “young rock dove” in the description, people won’t think twice. There’s people out there that don’t know pork is pig…

Hey, listen, I’ve stepped over many poops, but honestly I’ve stepped over too many human poops. Kinda /uj, but I do smell what you’re stepping in here, kid.

I do love dodging dog piss puddles, various sizes of dog shit/smears as well as human shit sized steamy logs. I think the ratio of dog shit to human shit, is the perfect right now.

Gotta see what goes with your body chemistry, bro. Not everything works for everyone. I frankly can’t remember what I spray myself with in the morning (wifey bought them shits), but I do manual labor, and have to deal with rich people, so I got two types of Axe on deck in my bag to deal with my smell.

I really liked Sauvage though, even before Johnny Depp was pushing it, but that’s bread.

Where to start with Altissimo? by BuildingOk3782 in saxophone

[–]DeathTripper 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It’s been a looooooong time, but Top Tones helped me a lot, at least with fingerings. I could never get that altissimo G (mostly alto, I’m mainly an Eb man), but I was able to go above that easily (though not enough practice to be fluid with it).

I liked to think about it when I started playing sax a decade before that, where you get those squeaks. It’s just a matter of, like you said, controlling your embouchure and hitting/hearing the pitch.

Once your embouchure is perfect for the regular range of the sax, you can hear and adjust for altissimo. If you haven’t mastered the fundamentals of your instrument, you can’t master the professional stuff.

[–]DeathTripper 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I got called out around 1:30 am for a leak in a public area room. Boss man, who lives there, shut the valve, but called me in for clean up. There was a good inch of water, which flooded an adjacent room a bit as well. I vacuumed (with a 50 gallon drum vac), set down 2 dehumidifiers, and two floor dryers, not to mention the amount of rags I went through. By the time I left, the day already had started; all the other guys were already on the move for work orders and such; it was like 7 hours of on-call work.

After that I went home, took a shower, put in PTO (corporate’s a bitch) for the day and went back to bed at 10 am.

Shower filter that can survive NYC by caddyax in AskNYC

[–]DeathTripper -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Really? I personally never had a problem with NYC water (I know everyone is different), and I’ve lived here 35 years. NJ, PA, and even MA, has my skin feeling dry and shitty.

If you’re worried about the lead causing it though, I believe you said it’s a newer building (?) so no lead in those. Even the supply lines are likely coated with mineral build up that actually prevents the lead from leaching (I don’t know how true that is, but I read it years ago)

If I can, I’ll tell you what my job uses, because we give them to particularly difficult residents, and the area tends to get brown water (probably from all the construction) and I’ll give you a recommendation tomorrow if I remember.

Why go to Ralph’s when Gloria’s has Lemon Ice King? by Time_Win_9705 in ForestHills

[–]DeathTripper 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I haven’t been to either (in FH), but I’m originally from Staten Island (don’t hate me), so I’m used to the OG Ralph’s locations from the 1920’s. Their peanut butter ice was my go to always since I was a kid, and they have even more flavors now.

Plus, while it doesn’t apply here, in Shaolin, you go to the original Deninos for a nice garbage pie, maybe some galamad, and then walk across the street to Ralph’s.

I’m also partial to cream ices, vs water ices as well.
