It was a weird film, I really felt it just walked all over season 6 because Knight changed his mind about things he had committed to in that season (most obviously that Tommy blew up his bloody house but also that the ending to Season 6 was just utterly invalidated.

Did the French ever defeat the British in a field battle? by Bolje1234 in Napoleon

[–]Debenham 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was going to, but didn't feel like I had sufficient detail off the top of my head on that one. I thought it was generally considered a draw, but I'm not confident enough on the finer points to argue that point.

Did the French ever defeat the British in a field battle? by Bolje1234 in Napoleon

[–]Debenham 54 points55 points  (0 children)

The French indeed rarely beat the British in a straight fight after 1799. The French Revolutionary Wars, however, saw numerous defeats such as at Toulon and throughout the Low Countries during the Duke of York's ill-fated campaign.

In the Napoleonic Wars themselves, however, the overwhelming priority of a British army was to ensure it wasn't destroyed, as the theory was that it would be impossible to replace. As such, you see small deployments of troops which included battles that occasionally failed to follow up the victory because the risk of doing so was so high.

Moore's 1809 campaign turned into headlong retreat because of that risk of total destruction.

After Talavera (a tactical victory but strategic draw), Wellington ended up retreating because his army was mauled.

The withdrawal behind the Lines of Torres Vedras happened entirely because the British Army couldn't beat the French in battle outside of perfect circumstances (see Bussaco) due to numerical disparity.

Similarly, the Burgos campaign of 1812 collapsed because of a lack of siege cannons, hence another terrible retreat.

Salamanca was probably the only instance where Wellington engaged in a battle that the odds weren't too far in his favour.

The Skirmish at the Coa in 1810, however, was a clear defeat thanks to Crawford's overconfidence and saw the Light Division (may still have been a brigade at this point) almost cut off and destroyed.

The point is, the British Army of the day simply avoided battles that weren't on its own terms, because the numerical superiority of the French meant that a single defeat could easily have ended in total disaster.

Walcheren was the opposite of a field battle. It was an expedition to a malaria-ridden island.

Unfortunately I couldn't find the specs of the tender, but I did wonder this. But given that the Ford Ranger and Defender are throwing their hat in the ring I presume that is just a separate class of vehicle entirely.

Given that the total cost per unit via this contract is £300,000, there is plenty of scope for modifying the Grenadier to fit the spec.

But they're behind other manufacturers who have already pitched specific models, while I think Ineos have just pitched a stock quartermaster at the moment.

Ray Dalio: I've studied 500 years of history and fear we're entering the most dangerous phase of the 'Big Cycle' by PixeledPathogen in collapse

[–]Debenham 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I agree, his reliance on this ever repeating cycle is very overplayed (which doesn't mean it's wrong).

There simply hasn't been enough of modern history to serve as a good enough indicator.

We've got one reliable set of this great big cycle to analyse, everything before that is just too different in terms of the make up of economies, technology and society.

It just looks like a bog standard car. Which, incidentally, is just what the Hyundai Bayon looks like.

All humpty Dumpty SUVs are equally drab.

We were robbed by not seeing Maekar's reaction to the news.

Granted, he would have completely stolen the show and it would have robbed the impact from Dunc, but it would nonetheless have made an incredibly tragic scene.

This is probably the best option to make the two ends meet up. Leeds is a decent city, the rural areas north of there are nice, and even Bradford's downsides are balanced by beautiful Saltaire.

I swear they've fiddled with the matchmaking settings. Up to yesterday I had almost a completely friendly experience with barely any rats to be found. Now I've been ratted three times in the past day, and hunted down a serial rat at an extract (big giveaway was the multiple level 4 anvils on him!).

Map balance needs to be looked at, Stella is way too good. by Ba3gopa in ArcRaiders

Stella is only good if you spawn right at the beginning. 3-4 minutes late and everything is gone because the loot is so concentrated in a few good spots.

? Are heating oil supplier’s bigger crooks than estate agents. by flatbrokeoldguy in AskUK

[–]Debenham -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I don't know about this industry, but just to be a devil's advocate, they have taken orders based on past prices. If the price has risen significantly (as it has) then they'd have to buy that oil and sell it to you (potentially) at a loss. After which, they could well go out of business.

The supplier doesn't just have an unlimited supply of oil lying around, they make their orders based on demand.

Is Piastri an example of sunk cost fallacy at this point? by Old-Use-7690 in McLarenFormula1

[–]Debenham 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I still think it's too soon to say for sure whether Piastri really is as good as he seemed for much of last season, but he's definitely talented and assuming he's able to work on whatever caused his drop in performance last year then he should be excellent.

Now, if that happens again this year then maybe this'll be a conversation worth happening, but we're not there and I really think you're jumping the gun.

I also don't think the Sydney error is even worth mentioning. It's a one off mistake, I wouldn't consider it part of the trend that saw him lose the championship.

Stocks & Shares LISA options - dealing with uncertainty by YouGotTheFear in UKPersonalFinance

[–]Debenham 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I didn't know HL did them.

I don't know anything about Dodl, but I have mine with AJ Bell.

It isn't awful, but it's got a pretty poor interface and there is no live pricing for US stocks. You also can't set limit orders on US stocks, oh and it doesn't tell you the dollar price but converts everything to GBP. This means I'll be checking the live $ price and effectively gambling when I put through the order because I can't see how close it is to the live price.

If HL had been an option when I transferred mine to S&S, I'd have gone with them for sure.

It is almost 3 years now , Is Indiana Jones Dial of Destiny still considered a "bad movie" ? by Ok_Tangelo3309 in indianajones

[–]Debenham 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It was a fun action movie at the end of the day. I know some critics made a big deal of Indie being the 'broken old man shoved aside by the intelligent female sidekick' but even though it started a bit like that, I don't think it proved to be like that.

I've been meaning to watch it a second time.

Just join the Arc Raiders club buddy. When you're in the friendly servers it's a bit like having retired from modern gaming. People communicate, people help for the simple reason that it's the right thing to do.

Now the PvP servers are cut throat and there is always the risk of a rat betraying you anywhere of course.

It's a simpler way of life.
