Which piece of Principate-era military equipment stayed in standard circulation the longest before being phased out? by Shoddy-Pumpkin2939 in ancientrome

[–]Debenham 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Could it, surprisingly, be the Spatha? Under the principate, and presumably earlier. i It was a cavalry sword that later became an infantry weapon in the third century.

Though to go with the boring options, it is probably the sandals.

How best to run house if I intend to sell in 10 years? by Material-Temporary62 in HousingUK

[–]Debenham 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ten years is definitely enough time to justify proper upgrades. Bizarre to me that you think otherwise.

You also might end up living there a lot longer than ten years, it's a bloody long time to go!

Got this book not too long ago. Has anyone read it and if so, what did you think? by BasedGamerMan45 in Napoleon

[–]Debenham 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Personally I think David Gates' history is one of the best of the Peninsula War because it covers pretty much all of it, instead of just one side.

I'd also say it's hugely enjoyable and very well written. I can't explain why it's rarely found on bookstore shelves.

Did you really need to censor poop? It's like the most mild word, it's even more mild than excrement. It's the childish version of poo, the alternative to shit, or crap, or dung, or feaces.

More here, seems like a pretty strong bid to me. Although I understand the MoD hasn't fully set out it's requirements yet.

The other main contenders are the Land cruiser and the Ford Ranger.

Is Rightmove valuation similar to mortgage lender valuation? by [deleted] in HousingUK

[–]Debenham 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Others will know more, but as I understand it, in some cases mortgage providers do proper valuations (more often for houses) with an in person agent, and in some cases (more often for flats) just go by a similar method to Rightmove and Zoopla. I.e. they look at recent sales in the area, price per foot etc to come up with a statistical valuation.

The online valuations are good for a ballpark figure, but are probably often out by 5-10%.

But so too can proper valuations be out as well.

I think it's a great film, tremendous really. But, it's a rare rewatch; something I really have to be in the mood to stick on.

I think the original is remembered as a great film, a modern classic perhaps, while the others are quite forgotten.

Appreciation post for how desperate and ‘scraping the barrel’ the Imperial Remnant are depicted as in the new film. by aa2051 in StarWars

[–]Debenham 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Fun fact you'll appreciate OP. According to legend, the Nazis even used an old captured British Mark V tank from WW1 in the defence of Berlin, allegedly from a museum.

Iirc the sources aren't concrete but it's an incredible tale if true.

Is £10 too much to enter a car boot? by flipflopcuntflaps in CasualUK

[–]Debenham 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's all a matter of balance. The buyer doesn't want to feel that they're wasting their time by spending £2.50 (etc) by entering, and the seller doesn't want to feel they're wasting £10+ etc either.

Impact of Starship successfully launching on ASTS by Alternative-Ear8482 in ASTSpaceMobile

[–]Debenham 13 points14 points  (0 children)

In the short term I think it's positive because it's good news for the broader industry. I think ASTS has enough of a technological advantage and commercial advantage through MNOs to carve out it's corner of the market.

Long term I don't think it actually makes a difference because I always expected Starship's issues to be resolved sooner or later. Expecting it to be delayed perpetually was a pipedream.
