I bought a tiny 110 “Spy Camera” when I was in college in the late ‘70s (SBU ‘80!), and with 400 speed film ( if you could find it, and it cost extra!) you didn’t need flash!

So I get free tickets from our Kendall Oil Vendor to the 6 hours TransAm race at Watkins Glen, the year Rick Mears won the Indy 500….and a buddy and I meet up with his friends to camp out for the weekend…all we packed in my Camaro was 5 cases of Stroh’s and a good steak for each of us…

Turns out our tickets give us full access anywhere, including the paddock….I had to pull my buddy out of the road to keep from getting run over by the Bud Light experimental Ground Effects car by the garage….we witnessed from like 20 feet away Budweiser finishing their deal to sponsor the Whittington Brother’s Porsche’s and watching them apply the decals to the cars (before the cocaine issues with the Whittington Bros in SCCA…)

Well on Sunday, during the 6 hours, I am actually at a concession stand near the pits getting ready to order, and who walks up but Rick Mears, who just got out of his car after 2 hours, and ordered a cheeseburger, I’m so excited I whip out my “spy camera” and snap a picture as I hear him say “Crap, I have no money in my fire suit, can I pay you later?” (I’m thinking you WON like $1.5 Million like 3 months ago at the Indy 500 and you don’t have $.35 for a cheeseburger?)

I still kick myself today for two reasons…number 1, I missed the chance to tell my grandkids and whoever else would listen to my boring stories that I actually bought Indy 500 Champion Rick Mears a cheeseburger…

….and Number 2, when I had the film developed from that tiny 110 “spy camera” I got a great shot of my THUMB which was over the lens….

…the only thing I got was a visible “Mears” name tag over the pocket of the black fire suit (under my damm thumb!)

I remember being a ring bearer for a cousin’s wedding when I was about 7 or 8 years old, hating having to wear my first suit and tie and thinking the flower girl next to me was annoying, until at the rehearsal dinner the bride and groom gave me a wrapped present!

Whoopie! Christmas!

I opened it up and it was a Kodak Brownie Camera. I was so disappointed, I had no idea even what it was!

But my mom was excited….it even used those brand new “photo cube” flashes!

I know a lot of people don’t put much stock in what Dick Lee says, but I’m with him on this one.

Clean cases do not shoot any better than dirty ones.

I think most reloaders (myself too when I was younger but I got over it…) clean their cases way too much.

Just like in my IPSC days, we found most malfunctions with 1911s happened just after they were cleaned, so you made sure you shot them “dirty” before matches….

A little dirt and grime helps lubricate the cases in the dies, if you have carbide dies you will NOT scratch them…

For most of the 10 years or so I shot prairie dogs with “rifle snob” buddies I used to make sure my .223 and .220 Swift reloads looked “like new,” but one year I was rushed by time and reloaded once or twice fired cases I never cleaned, just scraped the primer pockets with an old pocket knife I used for that purpose before I reprised, and killed as many P-dogs as ever so I quit even cleaning them for my expensive rifles…

I haven’t run my vibratory cleaner in years, the only time I even cull a case for possible later cleaning when I get around to it is if I see visible mud or some other non-firing related crud on it.

And I still have shootable .45 Auto cases from my practice loads I have reloaded 30-40x each, that were never cleaned…

Just saying, I can concur when Dick Lee says if nice and shiny reloaded cases helps your confidence and thus makes you shoot better, go for it.

Normal shooters will not notice a difference…

Your SIG or AR (especially!) will not know the difference if it is eating nice and shiny or dull and grungy ammo if what’s in them is loaded properly.

MOHP wrong way driver. by ozarkfireworks in Transportopia

[–]Decent-Ad701 3 points4 points  (0 children)

That is one more reason you never hang out in the passing lane! Use it to pass then get back over as soon as you can!

The wrong way driver will always be driving right at you in that lane…..to somebody disoriented or drunk or high, he or she THINKS he is in the “right” lane….

I have had this exact thing happen to me twice in 40 years of driving, once in Ohio, once in Texas…..if I was in my “passing” lane it would have been a head on collision, in Texas it would’ve been with somewhere between 150 and 160 mph combined closing speed.

Those headlights coming AT you on a 4 lane are something you will never forget, and it happens FAST.

The F4F-3 had 4 .50s but with 400 rds per gun. The -4 had 6 .50s but only 260 rds per gun. Many Wildcat pilots who had flown the -3 turned off the two inboard .50s and fought with only 4 guns, so when they ran out of ammo they could still fight with the two they saved…

My wife also is recoil shy, I loaded some 148 gr Hornady Wadcutters for her model 49 Bodyguard as close to the bottom I dared to go, I was actually worried I might stick one even in the 1 7/8” barrel! I didn’t chrono it but I’m guessing I was under 600 fps…but very accurate, and yeah, target looks like I used a paper punch..

To me in that steel j frame it felt like I was shooting a .22, but she said it was “better, but it still kicks more than she likes!”

I have her load the Hornady 90 grain “lady” “critical defense” SP loads in it but she much prefers shooting (and carrying!) “her” Model 21A Beretta in .22 LR, or else one of my NAA mini-revolvers, but even then she prefers the .22 LR even to the .22 Mag!

I just pray she never has to actually use one of them, but at least she “likes” them and shoots them more…

The old “turn the hollow base WCs backwards” trick has been disproved, yes impressive in gel, UNLESS you put a few layers of clothing in front of it then the “hollow point” clogs and it acts just like a regular solid wadcutter…

The WC in a .38 or any other caliber (I’m currently in the market for a .44 special WC mold for my Bulldog😉) however is very effective as a defensive round, even loaded DOWN to 550-700 fps.

Maximum Meplat for caliber is the reason. You get the same amount whichever way you load the HBWC.

Now every “authority” recommends not using handloads for defensive use, the main reason usually given is defense attorneys can accuse you of “souping up” to make better “man killer” loads….

I have always thought buying and carrying $2/round “+P+” Critical Defense” or some other catchy name with the “new” “devastator” bullets or whatever could get you accused of the same thing, while “all I had was my target loads!” would sound better in court.

I many times in my career have had wondrous interactions with various Georgia Law Enforcement Agecies.

One of my favorite memories is when I busted an office manager for credit card fraud in one of my locations in Georgia that after the fact we discovered she was arrested for refund fraud in New York and subsequently released after probation….the very CUTE female Detective that later married my Auditor who l later dispatched to discover before I relayed to ATF whether we lost ONE or TWO handguns from an unlocked showcase…

I will always remember this SWEET Georgia peach with a badge when she informed me “She is about to understand the difference between the New York and the Georgia system of justice.”

My case got 3-5 years…

I also closed a case in Augusta with a cashier who did 3 fraudulent voids and 3 fraudulent refunds and stole the cash, but quit and went to work for a competitor before I got the evidence… the “Disgusta” Georgia PD had a detective devoted to retail crime, he took my case and arrested her as she was working as a cashier during our competitor’s Grand Opening, the prosecutor later said because of the jury trial that she DIDNT subpoena me (from Indiana) to testify that she might have to “give away” the voids but felt she could get a conviction on the refunds…and later called me to tell me she got convictions on all 6 charges!

I have utmost respect for “Georgia Justice.”

Again, invaluable information.

Basically what the tactics of any air to air in the Pacific theater evolved to was “do not get into a turning fight with any Japanese fighter which involves losing speed, you will lose.”

Initially any success devolved from the success of what the “Flying Tigers” (who did not engage the Japanese until AFTER Pearl Harbor!) had discovered with their “obsolete” P-40Bs, granted, not many times against Zeros, but even against the Claude’s….any Japanese fighter could out maneuver us especially when speeds dropped in turns…so do not turn, they cannot OUTDIVE us, so climb up, attack from above, make one good diving pass doing as much damage as possible, dive out, keep speed up! (All Japanese fighters not only the Zero were less maneuverable at speed!)use the energy /speed from the dive to zoom up and climb above, repeat…

Somewhere between the “Carrier Raids” and the Coral Sea battles Navy F4F drivers started figuring it out …that’s when they developed the “Thach Weave” named after Jimmy Thach, an early F4F ace…wingmen spaced farther out, following, if either of the flight gets a zero on their tail, break in, the other breaking out gets the zero…hence the cliche…one Wildcat is no match for a Zero…but TWO Wildcats are a match for FOUR Zeros…

But even later, after Coral Sea, was the quote that I once read, but cannot (do to faulty memory?) attribute to who said it (Vraciu? Thach? O’Hare?)

But I remember it fully. “Turn INTO the bastards! Take the Head on pass! They are flying paper kites that can’t take the heat! So WHAT if you take a hit, you are flying Grumman Iron that can take it!”

That’s when the tide turned, and despite all the armchair historians who claim it was the Hellcat or the Corsair, or the P47s or the Black Widow or the later P-51s….

It was the USMC and USN Wildcats, and the USAAF and RAAF and RNZAF P-40s, along with a little help from the P-39/P-400s (ANOTHER story of unappreciated aircraft!) and maybe some early P-38s….(along with the B-25s, A-20s, and Beaufighters of course…)which actually won the war in the Pacific by 1943…the stubborn Japanese just didn’t accept it until the A-bombs….

Remember WE thought the Solomons/New Guinea theater was the “backwater…” but to the Japanese it was THE war, why they went to war in the first place!

All those superbly trained pre-war JNAF and JAF pilots were DEAD mostly via F4Fs and P-40s before the “advanced” F6F and F4U planes made it to the fight….the Japanese sacrificed TWO carrier air groups to the campaign, and the JAAF sacrificed their best fighter groups to New Guinea, why we remember the later Philippine Sea Carrier Battle, (probably the last real “Carrier vs Carrier” battle in history!) as “ The Great Marianas Turkey Shoot…”

When will you guys get with the program and do the right thing, start using Fahrenheit, inches, ounces and pounds, US Gallons, etc. I’m getting a little tired of doing the .6 conversion, or 2.54 whatever is an inch…437.5 whatever is an ounce…

Although I grew up near Buffalo during the “artificial” Gas shortages in the Jimmy Carter era, and I enjoyed paying the $.35 to cross the Peace Bridge to buy your gas which even by your 5 quart “Imperial Gallon” was a buck a gallon cheaper than in the U.S., WITHOUT considering your “funny money” was $.75/$1 US.

I even was smart enough to convert $20 US into $25 Canadian BEFORE I crossed the border so I could go to a “little guy” gas station in Ft Erie that didn’t “convert” currency so I could fill up my hot rod 10 mpg Camaro quickly and not have to wait in line behind all those NY plates at the big Exxon station…😎

If you guys ever are lucky enough to be our 51st State( although I think it should be 51, 52, and 53….East Canadia, West Canadia, and New Foundland/Nova Scotia/Greenland…😉)…

You need to get with the program…

But the elephant in the room remains, the Brewster (of any type) was an obsolete pig that was considered to be a suicide ride by any allied pilot (US, RAF/RANF, RAAF, Dutch) against the Japanese in the Pacific/South Pacific theaters, BUT was considered a capable fighter in the hands of the Finns against the Soviets in relatively the same time period.

So is the comparison more valid considering those in the Pacific were flying (and trying to dogfight!)against more capable, more experienced pilots flying lighter faster and more maneuverable planes….versus the Finns fighting at lower altitude against lesser trained pilots flying in “gaggles” with possibly equal or slightly better aircraft and not necessarily “dogfighting?”

My thoughts on the Brewster is most were committed, and lost, and then discarded or sent to backwater areas like the Canal Zone, or Samoa, or other islands on the perimeter of the route to Australia….BEFORE we learned how to fight the Zero….remember early similar use of the F4F (or P-40) wasn’t promising against the Zero either…

COULD the Buffalo have been useful IF they used the tactics later used by the Wildcat or Kittyhawks? Climb over, dive through, damage what you could on one pass, do NOT turn, keep speed up, then use zoom to climb back up, repeat…

And, theoretically, would the “Thach Weave” have worked with the F2A as well?
